SEOAL Goes To Meters-1980/13

Post by noreply66 »

From what I can see 1980 was the 1st year the league went to meters in all races

The boys team from Wellston pulls out the first title with all running events being meters followed by Athens,Waverly,Ironton,Logan,Gallipolis,Jackson and Meigs.

It was told that Ironton had a few of their best quit the week before the meet which lead too their drop to 4th.

The Golden Rockets had a strong team of 15 seniors and as a team had never finished higher than third place in a league meet.

Winning first places were

Shot Put.....Kelly.....Ironton
High jump.....Backus.....Logan
Long Jump.....Patton.....Wellston
Discus......Banta.....Waverly
Triple Jump.....Jackson.....Ironton
Pole Vault.....Arrowood.....Waverly
110H.....Conley.....Waverly
100M.....Patton.....Wellston
1600M.....Schoener.....Ironton-this is #10 all-time
4x100.....Wellston
400M.....Lavery.....Athens

200M.....Lavery.....Athens
3200M.....Schoener.....Ironton
4x400.....Wellston

Conley from Waverly has the # 10 all-time in the 300 hurdles

No 4x200 or 4x800

1981-Girls Boys

From what I can find this was the first year the girls went to meters in running events.

Waverly's Jaki Copeland won four events--100m,200m,400m and the long jump. Wellston's Lori Roberts finished 2nd in each of the events Copeland won. Roberts score 32 of Wellston's points.

Wolfe for Gallipolis time in the 100 Hurdles of 15.5 is #7 all-time

In the boys meet Ironton lead Gallipolis going into the final event [4x400] and Gallipolis needed to win to take the meet. Waverly and Athens were running 1-2 in the first three legs and Gallipolis was third and Ironton was running fifth. If the order stayed that way Ironton would pull out the league meet by two points. Hoke running anchor for Gallipolis passed Waverly's Rick Conley and Athen's Brian Lavery to shoot from third to first and give Gallipolis 10 points toward their third-ever league title. Gallipolis ended the meet with 109 points to Ironton's 107.

Wellston the defending champions were almost shut out in the meet. baseball player Todd Montgomery ran the 100 meters finishing fifth for the Rockets only points.

The Blue Devils ended a 5 year draught, previously winning in 1970/76.

Ironton's Jimmy Morris was the meet's high scorer with 34 points--winning the long Jump, Triple Jump, setting meet records in both.
The jump of 22' 2 1/2" in the long jump stands at #4 all-time and the 44' 1" in the triple jump stands at #2 all-time.

Waverly's Rick Conely set a new meet record in the 300h. Conley broke the record set by Mike DeStepen in last years meet which kept Conley from winning the 300H in his four year at the varsity level. The time of 39.50 is #2 all-time

Bowman of Waverly 1600 time of 4:29.6 is #7 all-time

1982

On the girls side Waverly with four 1st place finishes takes the league with 100 points. Logan also with four 1st place finishes takes 5th 42 points back. Waverly's Brenda Reed wins the shot put and the Discus. Logan's Misty Schultz wins 1600 along with team mates in the 4x800 and 4x400 --she also finished 5th in the 800 meters.

Reed from Waverly holds the #6 all-time in the shot put--39' 3"
Fenik of Jackson holds the all-time # 7 spot in the Long Jump of 17' 1"
Gallia's Wolfe has the #10 all-time in 100 hurdles

Ironton's girls did not take part in this meet.

On the boys side Athens and Ironton picked up 5 first place finishes to go 1 & 2 136/129.

Ironton's Jimmy Morris wins the Long Jump and Triple jump with new meet record in each. His jump of 44' 2 1/2" in the triple jump still stands today and his the oldest record on the books.

Ironton's Dennis Bacon was a double winner in two events that was a little strange--100 meters and the shot put.

Wood from Gallia holds the # 9 all-time in the discus at 159' 0"
Peters from Waverly has the #6 all-time spot in triple jump of 42' "
Bowman of Waverly holds the all-time # 4 spot in the 800 at 1:59.5

Logan's Misty Schults had 4 of Logan's 1st place finishes winning 400/800/1600 and was a member of the winning 4x400

Athens took 3 of 4 relays--4x100/4x200/4x800

Reed's throw of 39' 3 3/4" stands #5 all-time Waverly
Wolfe from Gallia stands at # 6 all-time with 15.5 in the 100 hurdles

On the boys side it might have been the first sign of what was coming for Logan over the next three decades as they had their best showing going back to the early 60s with a 2nd place finish.

Athens beat out the Chiefs by 2 1/2 points as they won seven events to the Chiefs four.

Once again Bacon won the shot put but this time it was Lewis Bacon.

Only five teams competed for the league title this year with Meigs and Waverly gone. Ironton competed this year after a absence and Imogene Johnson was the Tigers only first place finish [200M] to help them to a 4th place finish ahead of Jackson.

Last years four event winner Misty Schultz only took home three 1st as she finished 3rd in the 400 behind Logan's Dana Harris and Jodi Adams from Gallipolis.

Logan finished in 2nd with eight 1st to only five for Athens but the girls from Athens depth won them the league.

Two new events were added to the girls this year the 300 hurdles won by Logan's Debbie Palmentor in 48.9 and the 3200M won by Athens' Jeannie Cavender in 12:17.80.

Janey from Gallipolis stands at # 8 all-time in the long Jump at 16' 11 1/2"

Speed was back in the meet for the boys this year as Paul Close of Gallipolis won the 100M [11.2] and the 200M [23.0] both meet records. The 200M time was in the prelims. Paul won three of four Blue Devils 1st.

Athens took the meet winning six events all the relays and the distance races. Logan finish in second nine points back and also having six 1st. The Chiefs 800/1600/3200 didn't perform as welll as they had been doing all year which cost them point they were hoping to get.

Garber from Gallipolis holds the #8 spot in the triple jump with 42' 1 1/4"

Ironton finished 4th and seems to be fading in league meets as of late.

This would be the last league title for the Athens boys

1985

The girls from Gallipolis win 9 events to take the league meet. The Gallia girls win 3 of 4 relays and Janey jumps 17' 4 1/2" in the long jump.

A lot of people was saying that Logan would fall this year but a strong showing in the 800/1600/3200 helped them with a 42 point win over runner up Gallipolis 170/128 for their 3rd title in a row after finishing third in 2008.

Warren 106, Logan 81, Portsmouth 40 and Jackson 38. A foot injury to Jackson's Fulks kept their points down as she dropped out of the 200 and 400.
Chillicothe won 7 events Gallipolis 5, Warren 2 and Logan and Portsmouth 1 each.
Osborne of Chillicothe won the 100/200/400 and her 4x400 was 2nd.

Peyton Adkins moved to #7 in the 3200 and #8 in the 1600
The 4x400 time of Gallipolis put them at #10
No records were set this year. Over all this year most of the running events were down

Looking at 2013---I would say Chillicothe should take the title in their last year in the league. Look for Logan to make a big jump in the standings with the 2013 team having the last three middle school championships. Gallipolis will push Chillicothe in the running events but with being weak in the field events Chillicothe will pull away and with Logan being strong this year in the field events they should slip into 2nd place at the end.

Boys

Logan won their 4th title in a row with 190 points--Warren was 2nd with 115, Portsmouth 75, Chillicothe 67, Gallipolis 57, Jackson 17.
Due to mostly injuries Jackson lost a lot of speed that could have them winning the 4x100 and 4x200 and a strong showing in the 4x400, 100 ,200 and 400.

Logan won 9 events, Gallipolis 4 and Portsmouth and Warren 2 each.
Relays went to Logan 4x800 and 4x200--Gallipolis 4x100 and Portsmouth 4x400
Logan won 4 of the 5 field events
Goff of Gallipolis won the 100/200 was a member of the winning 4x100 team and a member of he 4x200 that finished 6th.
Logan's Coy Blair set the only record and that was in the shot put. Coy also won the discus and that throw put him in the # 8 spot
Fridley of Logan won the High Jump and he moved to the #4 spot. Also J. Vermillion moved to the # 8 spot in the high jump.
In the pole vault Griggs of Logan won and moved to the #4 spot--Wigat of Warren moved to the #5 spot and Doyle of Logan jumped to the # 6th spot.
The 100 meters was the slowest since 1980--[think the timing was off] seemed like everyone was a half second off.
In the 110 hurdles freshman Pennington was 2nd with a sub 16.00--[Chillicothe]
Graham of Logan moved to the # 10 spot in the 300 hurdles after starting the season as the #3 300 hurdler for Logan.
S. Vermillion moved to the # 5 spot in the 800-[Logan]
The 4x800 team of Logan moved to the # 8 spot.
Cochran of Warren won the 1600/3200 and was a member of the 2nd place 4x800

A quick review of 2013 shows Logan winning again and Warren in the number two spot. Chillicothe should make a run for 2nd place but their field events will not score enough points to keep ahead of Warren.
Logan lost a lot but returns along with this years middle school champion the last four middle school champions.
Next years freshman will have a few boys that will step right in to fill some gaps.

2013

Girls

The girls from Gallipolis stop Chillicothe streak at 2. The Cavs were with out standout Megan Osborne which kept the Cavs from getting 1st and 2nd in two events and not taking the 400 meters and 4x4 relay.

Only 19 points separated the top four teams with Gallipolis getting 129.....Chillicothe 115.....Logan 114 and Warren with 110 followed by Jackson 52 and Portsmouth with 01.

Winning events was Warrren 6.....110 hurdles, 4x1, 300 hurdles, Discus, Shot put and Pole Vault. Gardner will return in 2014 after wins in the 100h, 300h and Pole Vault and a member of the winning 4x100.....Gallipolis 5.....4x200, 1600, 400, 800 and 3200. Gallipolis will have Madison Holley back with the wins from the 16/32 under her belt. Also H. Watts will return from 1st in the 400 and 800......Chillicothe 3.....100m, 200m and the Long Jump.....Chillicothe left the league so we will have new champions in these three events.....Logan 2.....4x8 and 4x4.....Look for Logan to win these in 2014 with having the same girls back.....Jackson 1.....High Jump..... Shasteen will be the Returning high jump champ.

Warren's Gardner set the only record last year[boys or girls] in the pole Vault.

Going into the top ten from when Meters started

Shasteen of Jackson tied #4 in the HJ

Ryan from Warren went to #4 in the Discus

Watts from Gallipolis went to #2 in the 800

Another note the winning time in the 100m and 3200 was the slowest since going to all meters

2014 out look has me picking the Girls from Logan winning with about everyone back plus a talent bunch of distant runners from the Middle school. Gallipolis 2nd. Warren 3rd, Jackson 4th and Portsmouth last.

Boys

The Boys from Logan won their 5th title in a row and their new Coaches first with 198 points. Warren 128.....Gallipolis 63.50.....Chillicothe 56.....Jackson 40 and Portsmouth with 37.50. The Cavs were without Pennington in the 110 and 300 plus two relays. The hurdles alone could have meant 20 points for the Cavs.

Winning events.....Logan 8.....100m, 200m, 4x100, 300h, 800m, long jump, High Jump, Pole Vault.....5 of those winners graduated.
Warren 3.....1600m, 3200m and Discus.....Only the discus champ graduated.....Chillicothe 3.....4x8, 400m and 4x4....New champs will be in these three as Chillicothe has left the league..Gallipolis 1..110 hurdles and they return.Jackson 1.Shot Put.they graduated.Portsmouth 4x200

Stevens from Logan was the winner in the 100m,200m and a member of 4x100.....Blain from Warren one the 1600/3200.....Freidley of Logan won the High jump and Long jump.

Freidley of Logan tied for #6 all/time in the HJ and LJ

Doyle of Logan went to #5 in the pole vault and Team mate Bowlby jumped to #7

The 4x8 of Chillicothe jumped up to #9

Out look for 2014......It just might come down to the 4x400 between Logan and Warren

This is finished 1980/2011--All top 10 spots are from 1980 to 2011. As far as I can tell 1980 is when the league went to all meters in the running events.Even with the field events still being in feet and inches the top ten is from 1980.
