Buckeyes, Skidmore shine at home invitational
From submitted reports
Even though she was running at the new track and field facility at Nelsonville-York High School for the first time, Alexander long-distance standout Emily Skidmore ensured it wouldn't be the last that her name is associated with the venue.
Skidmore won two events, ran the lead-off leg of a winning relay team, and set three new track records during a six-team invitational held Tuesday afternoon.
Skidmore was her usual dominant self in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. She won the 1,600 with a time of 5:28.14, which was three seconds better than the previous best at the track. In the 3,200, her winning time of 11:53.28 was a nearly identical three-second improvment in the track's previous best time.
As part of the 3,200-meter relay team, Skidmore joined Hannah Shull, Ashley Towne and Julie Els to post a winning time of 10:46.30 - which clipped the previous track-best effort of 10:49.89.
The records didn't end there. Trimble thrower Rachel Six set a new venue-best record in the shot put with a winning throw of 40 feet, 5.75 inches. The previous record was 38-10.
While individual records were falling, the host Buckeyes ran off with top team honors. Nelsonville-York's boys team won with a total of 124 points to slip past Eastern, while the Buckeye girls racked up 187 points to easily outdistance Trimble (117).
On the boys side, the Buckeyes won with depth. Nelsonville-York claimed wins in just three individual events but placed high throughout. Hurdler John Win led N-Y with wins in both the 110-meter high (16.91 second) and 300-meter hurdle (44.56) races. Also winning for the Bucks was Bill McCulloch, who took top honors in the 100-meter dash (11.88).
Other local winners including Trimble's Justin Hartley (800-meter run, 2:14.25) and Alexander's Kevin Thompson - who both the 1,600 (4:53.55) and 3,200-meter (10:57.39) runs.
On the girls side, Nelsonville-York was powered by sprinters Lisa Meade and Kim Kline. Meade claimed three individual event wins, while Kline won two.
Both joined Heather Hartley and Maria Martinez on the 4x100-meter relay team that won with a time of 55.21 seconds.
Individually, Meade was the meet's best in the 100 (13.34), 200 (27.69) and in the long jump (16 feet, 0.25 inches). Kline, meanwhile, picked up victories in the 400-meter dash (1:04.08) and the pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches).
Nelsonville-York also won the 4x200-meter relay race with Hartley and Martinez joining Emily MCClain and Alyssa Handa for a winning time of 1:58.09.
Trimble's Six was also a double winner, as she made it a sweep in the throwing events by winning the discus (101 feet, 11 inches).
Alexander's Els, a freshman, won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.23.
