Waverly 2009 Football
How good does everyone think Waverly is going to be? What is the status with some of the players who are thinking of not playing and how do you see the team finishing in the SOC?

A team with Roback and Malone will be dangerous at times. Waverly's problem last year was they had lost a ton of seniors and lacked O line and defensive play.
Re: waverly football 2009
They better know by now if they're playing or not. Won't be pleasant two a days if they're not there now. Waverly can be a dangerous TEAM if everybody sticks it out and plays. Just remember the 1-9 team. They became a 10-0 team.

I have heard that the numbers are going to be down this year? Anyone know why some are deciding not to play?

Waverly should be improved from last year, but they are also facing a few other SOC teams that are also going to be improved: Burg, Minford and Valley. West will also be dangerous, but I think the key to opponents stopping the Tigers will be stopping Roback. Teams that can push him out of the pocket and make him run and have LB's and DE's that can stop him after short gains will handle Waverly's offense. On the other hand, if Roback can set in the pocket and throw, or get out of the pocket and get into the secondary or around the corner, they should really be able to score some points. But it will be much like last year and their sucess will revolve around Roback.

It does appear numbers are down right now. I guess it depends who is playing and who is not. It's nice to have high numbers but as long as the "key" athletes are playing they should be fine. We saw last year the Tigers needed linemen. If that is corrected it could be a good year.

Hopefully some will change their minds, you only have one chance to play football. It is a wonderful experience.

Waverly has a 7 on 7 with Chilly Wednesday at 5:00p.m.
These kids opting not to play football are making HUGE mistakes. I hear some are choosing to focus on one sport, whether basketball or baseball.
The best athletes who have come through Waverly have been 3 sport athletes. I'd say that is true with most schools.
Trevor Walls is the most recent example at Waverly. He looks to start at QB at New Mexico State this season. Trevor excelled at football, basketball and baseball.
The basketball and baseball coaches need to be encouraging these kids to play other sports. I'm not saying they aren't but if they aren't they need to.

I admit I respect a young man who wants to concentrate on being better at one sport but more times than not those who do this are not as good as they think they are at that one sport and in the long run in talking to a lot of people who have done this they admit they missed out on so much.
I really hope those who are doing this think it all the way through because youth unfortunately does not last forever.

Very well stated, and more times than not, truthful.

On offense the skill positions look solid. Ryan Tackett will be a nice addition at the receiver core.....great hands. The offensive line will be key and they have some experience and are bigger and stronger than last year. Things are definitely looking up.
The defense should be faster and more physical than last year.

Thanks coach Knight for the clarification. I guess I would have found out when I showed up this evening.
