Rules question
I have a question about the "chuck" rule. The slot receiver is 5-7 yards outside the tackle. At the snap he takes a few steps downfield and starts a crossing or drag route appx 5 yards down field. As he is crossing in front of the linebacker and looking at the QB the LB blindsides him. The QB was still in the pocket and threw the ball a second after the hit. This was done in front of the official....he saw it...looked at the downed player....no call. The receiver is out indefinately with a concussion now.
You hear about player safety, if this was a legal hit, it is exactly what needs taken from the game to protect kids. If the LB seperates the receiver from the ball it is good hard nosed football but to crush a defenseless receiver running a route is just headhunting. In my opinion this play was just a cheap shot that may have ended the season for one of the team captains and possibly the best all-around player on the team.

Re: Rules question
Clean play as long as the "chuck" was just that, and not a hit on a defenseless player, or the ball was not in the air. What is confusing is you use the word "chuck" and defenseless player in the same story, and there is a huge difference in the two.

Re: Rules question
What is considered defenseless???? Player looking other way should be considered defenseless.
This was an all-out viscious hit with the intent to hurt. To me a "chuck" is when a defender engages a receiver coming off the line of scrimmage...not after the kid has run across the field 15-20 yards.

Re: Rules question
A defenseless player would be one not looking and in a position to not defend themselves, especially if hit high. The "re-directing" of a receiver is basic fundamental football, and the receiver does not necessarily have to be avoided on his route. This is at best a judgement call that will be consistently inconsistent.

Re: Rules question
Illegal use of hands for blocking a receiver who is no longer a blocker. Rule 9.2.3
Re: Rules question
don't confuse NFHS rules with NCAA rules, the most it could be is a personal foul, but as long as the ball is not in the air, hence (pass interference ) no call is the right call.
you would not believe howw many times i've been asked to call interference when the reciever and defender get tangled as they both go for the football, as this is also a no call.

Don't expect most officials to call this the way the rules are written though!

Re: Rules question

Re: Rules question
.A defender may legally contact an eligible receiver beyond the neutral zone before the pass is in flight. The contact may be a block or warding off the opponent who is attempting to block by pushing or pulling him. However, if the receiver is not attempting to block or has gone past or is moving away, it is illegal for the defender to use hands in the manner described.
how you described it the hit was before the pass was thrown after the hit so its not pass interference again i didnt see it so idk how i would have judged it but you may have a case these are the rules that need to be looked at but as a linebacker your tought not to let anyone cross your face

If the LB blindsided the receiver by hitting him in the back this is an illegal block in the back. It should be called as such.
