2025 MVL Projections

Post by MVLfan »

With the winter season all but over, save Maysville’s bball title game, it’s time to completely forget that spring sports exist and look ahead to the fall! 7on7’s, showcases, and more will be on the horizon. Let’s take a way too early look at the 2025 MVL Football season.
MVL JR/SR Showcase was posted on X to be at TVHS again this year. Date is May 7th at 4:30.

BIG
Sheridan- likely the early favorite to win the big school division with a combination of one of the best coaching staff’s in the league and returners at key positions, though they do lose a significant amount of starters.
KEY RETURNERS: Whiteman, Hupp, Russell
Tri Valley- won the league without breaking a sweat last year, albeit with a stacked roster. Nobody loses more starters than TV, but success breeds success.
KEY RETURNERS: Lamonica, McClellan
John Glenn- had a “down” year in a loaded region, but has been the third best big in recent years. Expect for them to bounce back after replacing a lot to graduation this past year.
KEY RETURNERS: Edwards, Metzger
Philo- lost a ton of production with Talon’s graduating. Bring back a lot of linemen, but will need some guys to step up to replace the yardage and points.
KEY RETURNERS: Lincicome, Mahon
Morgan- brand new coach last year in their first year in the big, but brings back a decent amount of starters. Question will be, are they bringing back talent? With the new league rules, this will be their last year in the big division.
KEY RETURNERS: Pauley, Bankes
River View- new coach hopes to make them respectable. They didn’t play a close game last year. Until they shrink to the small division, they are just a tune up game.
PROJECTION: Sheridan, TV, winner of JG/PH, loser of JG/PH, Morgan, River View.

SMALL
New Lex- won the division a year ago and brings back more than most, but have a lot of losses in production from their stars. Can’t see them not repeating.
KEY RETURNERS: Ratliff(s), Spicer, Stenson
West Muskingum- took NL to about a minute left in the 4th, or else they would have been back to back champs. A year ago they lost Rashid, this year they lose most of the rest. Coaching and enough experience will keep them in the conversation.
KEY RETURNERS: Brownrigg, Smith, Bennett
Maysville- with new HC and a lot of youth on last years team, Chase Bowman has a chance to make noise this year. Only problem is this group is probably a year away, as big turn arounds rarely happen in year 1. Will push for #3 when they return to the Big in a year.
KEY RETURNERS: Rock, Nichols
Meadowbrook- has a very experienced returning cast, but replaces a 4 year trigger man at Q and has not been overly competitive in the league the last two years. Have been down since dominating the league their first 2 years.
KEY RETURNERS: Sedor, Black, Clendenning
Coshocton- Lose their senior laden line, but return most of their skill positions as they have a talented sophomore class that got a lot of varsity experience last year. Feels like this group hasn’t achieved to their potential. If they can get the line right, they have the skill.
KEY RETURNERS: Haley, Wince
Crooksville- 3rd coach in 3 years and hearing their most talented player (QB) is transferring. They got their first league win a year ago and have been close to Meadowbrook the past 2 years.
KEY RETURNERS: Hill (maybe), Harvey
PROJECTION: New Lex, West M, Maysville, Coshocton, Meadowbrook, Crooksville

Thoughts?

And a fun fact of sorts, we could have 3 head coaches with sons playing QB this year.

Lincicome- Philo
Edwards- John Glenn
Brownrigg- West M

Hill I'm pretty sure has been rumored to transfer every year he's been in school. Pretty sure the family actually lives in the Morgan district that all the other Crooksville kids live in. So he'd have to move in order to play for another district other than CVille or Morgan.

Comment on the "new league rules" comment in the Morgan summary.

With the MVL going to 12 teams in 2020, it was decided in 2018 that enrollment numbers from OHSAA boys and girls combined in even years would be used to set divisions for 2 years starting 2 years in the future.

From memory so maybe 95% correct :)

So 2018 had TV, SH, JG, PH, RV, MA, ----- MO, NL, ME, CO, WM, CR which was divisions in 2020-21, 2021-22

Same in 2020 which kept divisions the same for 2022-23, 2023-24

In 2022, TV, SH, JG, PH, RV, MO, ----- MA, NL, ME, WM, CO, CR which is divisions 2024-25, 2025-26

In 2024, TV, SH, JG, PH, MA, RV, ----- NL, MO, ME, WM, CO, CR for 2026-27, 2027-28

RV and MO are trending smaller and WM and NL are trending larger.

Two bigs going down, two smalls going up. The shrinking of River View is huge going from 5th biggest to 2nd smallest. Would assume these would take shape in the next realignment of the league. Happy to see Crooksville has dropped back down to D6 where they belong. It was asinine to see them in D5 last year- they must have figured out how to do competitive balance.

Some interesting notes:
John Glenn is the 6th smallest D3, close to dropping back down to D4
Meadowbrook and West M are two of the top 10 biggest D5. With Ironton and HP, would assume both would be thrilled to bump up to D4
Sheridan overtakes TV as the biggest big.

Sheridan over taking TV is wild to see from 10-15 years ago, with ZVille being below both of those. It speaks to the growth of the Northern Local District and people moving down into that area. Houses are going up all over the place. I believe the same could be said for West, a neighboring district to Northern. There seems to be some houses here or there going up around us. Obviously new houses probably doesn't mean new HS aged kids but over time that will obviously add up. Unless they're families with HS/MS aged kids.... i'm not sure of the demographics.

I assume the high CB # fow WM is ZVille kids coming over.

So with the new 2 year cycle the Big Division will be SH, TV, JG, PH, MY, NL
and Small MB, WM, MO, CO, RV, CV
for the 26/27 & 27/28 School year?

Yes, would not expect Zanesville to be smaller than either. West definitely inheriting some kids with their recent successes, as well Maysville if Bowman can get them turned around.

I could be wrong, but I believe last years numbers set the divisions for the next realignment with Morgan and Maysville swapping back. Pretty sure they’re 2 years out, which is how Morgan got ‘screwed’ last time. But I could most certainly be wrong; just believe it’s that way to help schools get scheduling done.
