16 teams is way too many. I understand why the move to 12, especially during the pandemic. Once the OHSAA makes the money off of more teams, I just don't see them rolling it back. If it does stay at 12, give the top 4 teams in each region a bye.

That’s the only potential solution I see. Going back to 8 is unlikely. 12 with a first round bye would be ok.bfry wrote: Tue Apr 22, 2025 8:20 am 16 teams is way too many. I liked the 12 team concept when it was first introduced. However, since using the 16 team format I do recall a 16 defeating a 1, a 15 over a 2, several 14’s over 3’s and 13’s over 4’s….. to me that justifies in the State ‘s mind to stay with 16 teams

Yes there is no doubt they happen. I’m not sure the state cares so much about the competitiveness. Dollar signs drive the decision. I still think the tournament was best with 8.

If 12 teams is too far of a reduction (and I don't think 12 is), something I wouldn't be opposed of is going to 8 regions and doing 7 teams per region. Top region winner gets the bye, 2-4 get a home game, 5-7 on the road. First 3 rounds are hosted by the higher seed while the final 3 rounds are neutral site. If it was kept at 4 regions, then it would be 14 teams with the top 2 getting the bye, 3-8 at home, 9-14 on the road. I have no issue with 12, and I think it's more likely than 14, but I think OHSAA could even push back on 12 teams after their jump to 16 teams.

The state gets all the gate for playoff games so they aren't going to roll it back. I wouldn't be surprised if one day every team makes the playoffs like they do in Kentucky. You basically just have to win a few games now to qualify. There are very few high schools now list playoff appearances because it would be every year.

I’ve talked to coaches they don’t want a week off they think it’s a disadvantage. 16 is here to stay.

100% on the first part.EasternDspy wrote: Wed Apr 23, 2025 3:28 pm I’ve talked to coaches they don’t want a week off they think it’s a disadvantage. 16 is here to stay.
16 may or may not be here to stay, but byes being assigned to the top four teams by default is going to be deeply unpopular with those coaches. A punishment instead of a reward.

I don’t agree, but it doesn’t really matter what my opinion is.
