Article from the Athens News......N-Y group hopes to raise $$ for new field house

http://www.athensnews.com/news/sports/2008/aug/14/n-y-group-hopes-raise-new-field-house/

The high school and elementary school are currently located in one complex in Nelsonville (very close to Buchtel), while the middle school is located in Poston. The high school and elementary buildings are currently connected by a long hallway, and the middle school is being added onto the building, and will be located between the two other buildings.

The entire project is costing $22 million, but the district is only paying 14 percent of the cost with the Ohio School Facilities Commission paying the rest. The project is expected to be completed by September 2010.

While that work is going on, the district has already made improvements to the athletic complex thanks to funding from the athletic boosters at the school. A new artificial turf football field has been put in, a new all-weather track has been installed, and other improvements have been made to the football stadium. Donations from Rocky Brand, the teachers and staff of the district, and other area businesses and residents have made the improvements possible, according to John Hurd, president of the athletic boosters.

The boosters also raise money through the Buckeye Bash raffle, which is held every spring. Tickets for the 2009 Buckeye Bash are on sale now, the money raised from this event will help pay for the improvements that have already been made to the track, as well as planned improvements to the baseball and softball fields, Hurd said.

The boosters are also hoping to build a new field house at the school complex, and this building could be used as an extra gymnasium for practices and youth sports. It could also be used for community events such as wedding receptions, family reunions and celebrations, Hurd said. The plans for this building are preliminary, and it probably will take a few years to raise the necessary funding, Hurd said. The next Buckeye Bash will be the third, and $200,000 worth of prizes will be raffled off.
