well, burg could beat the teams in their league and the teams around them so they are good no matter what coldwater says

BobSugar, you are spot on!BobSugar wrote:No. Quality of the teams you play matters. For example:
Ironton(6-4): Winning record, but only beat OVC teams = Bad team
Youngs.Ursuline(5-5): Only 5 wins (reg season), but played top level competition.Regional champion. = Good team
To everyone else:
If your definition of a good team is one that beat everyone in their own tiny bubble, then sure, that team is good.
For example:
Is Ironton good compared to the rest of the OVC? Yes. Is Ironton good compared to the rest of the region? No.
Re: A winning record:Does it really say you were a good team?
Almost all So Eastern teams don't want to have their bubble burst, so that's why they stick around and play people they're comfortable playing in their non-league schedules. They can play teams around here in their league but almost refuse to venture a county of two away when it comes to the non-league schedule.
You will always hear them blame it on finances and travel costs but's that's just a big bunch of baloney. The truth is they are gutless to get outta the region because they will have their delusions of grandeur ruined. That's why when they get to the state level they get exposed as pretenders and not contenders.

Gutless?
Honestly most schools aren't worried about winning a state title. We live in Southeastern Ohio, we struggle to provide school supplies and dinner for our children.
At some point people are going to have to give up this idea that if Eastern or Nelsonville-York somehow goes out and plays a brutal schedule that it will somehow propel them to win a title.
In Southeastern Ohio it is a geographic and economics issue. PERIOD.

Locally, it matters. Based on what's going on in west central Ohio, it obviously didn't matter. We got a long way to get there & I think there's enough talent & good coaching, especially the burg coaching staff, to get there. They were impressive all year & the landscape has definitely changed. Versailles was always good, & idk when they joined the Mac, but they were beatable.
Time for tons iof community support & the desire to play @ a different level.
It's a great question though.

If you want a state title. Make an all star team. Every team that wins state public and private gain players from other schools.
Re: A winning record:Does it really say you were a good team?
That's what Jackson did went outside the SEO box and got a couple of different teams to play for next year, they very well could've played a couple teams around here, but if you wanna see how good you are go play the good teams then you can judge your team. They have done that the last few years to see, and at the beginning of the year when you looked at there schedule it looked tough compared to where the schools placed the previous year , but some of the teams didn't live up to it.When you have to schedule 1 or 2 years in advance , you keep your fingers crossed and hope they'll be a guality opponent .I think adding W.Brown and Winton Woods was a good move to judge your squad with.

No doubt. Ironton did this for decades. And it worked.Raider6309 wrote:If you want a state title. Make an all star team. Every team that wins state public and private gain players from other schools.

Here I was really impressed with the response down here with all the talk about the need to pick up tougher out of conference games. Even discussion about possible fundraiser options to finance the added travel costs. What a refreshing difference that a team/community would think to look within for what could be done that might help them down the road. Compared to all the whining and moaning constantly spewed over on other forums about how uneven the playing field is and there is nothing we can do.
You could do worse than following the examples of the MAC. They do it with their own homegrown kids.
Re: A winning record:Does it really say you were a good team?
It depends on what you mean by "good," "great," "superb," "stupendous," and "amazing." If the teenage boys who played became better men, what does it matter what a message board jockey thinks?

Agreed 110%. The logic some have here, of having to play people better than you to become better is flawed. Many schools have played better teams for years and what have they gotten? Low numbers and a lot of losses. If you honestly believe that every team startsa season believing they will win a state title you are fooling yourselves. There are many good schools who seek to be competitive in their communities, league and region who know they simply do not have the horses to win in week 15. If it was a matter of becoming better by playing up, Northwest, Green, Federal Hocking, Manchester, Miller, Huntington, would all be very very good by now. Some would even be state powers.

Gee, you mean there are no poor schools in the rest of the state ? Always amazed at this line and another BS responses as to why SEO is so darn poor at football. The MAC is classic -- rural and there are pockets of poverty there too. Farmers and factory workers. Poor single moms. Broken families.
Its sucks when you keep doing it the same way, SEO, and have nothing to show for it. Buit to challenge your athletes would be a shock. Keep scheduling those teams you can beat most of the time.

Re: A winning record:Does it really say you were a good team?
Paladin is right here folks, he is probably using this year's 8-2 Logan team that missed the play-offs finishing 10th or 11th in Region 5 as his example. Chiefs apparently like beating up on schools 4 and 5 divisions below them and having their fans "fake-it" and feel all warm and fuzzy inside with the raging inferiority complexes in Hocking County.Paladin wrote:Gee, you mean there are no poor schools in the rest of the state ?
