He also was being picked apart by the recruiting efforts of the surrounding districts through open enrollment. As a rule his teams were strong, fast and the players had a great deal of respect for him as a coach. RVHS only won a game when they started playing smaller schools.

The downward spiral of RV has created a nightmare for anyone who coaches there. There has been much talk about solutions but probably the greatest need is for in-school recruiting. Like all schools, the raw material exists to field a team but for whatever reason they do not show up at the beginning of August. There is some loss through quitting but that can be expected.

Coach McClelland and staff have got a gutsy bunch of young men playing for them right now. That is evidenced by the fact that they keep showing up on Friday night. If they survive it and stick together, with some careful key position recruiting they should be respectable in the near future. I honestly feel that they should see some results in the next season but this year they will have to play the cards that they have been dealt.

Before anyone gives me a rash about being a "cheerleader" understand that I have truly supported the program for many years and am not a fair-weather fan. I have seen all of the problems from within but I feel that they could be corrected. It has been mentioned that there is no support for athletics from the administration and it undoubtedly is playing out. McClelland will have to side-step that issue and take the matter in hand personally and at the building level. I drove by the old school every night and saw him out there workiing with the boys in the off-season and that is a start.

The program will have to be treated like a business that is opening its doors for the first time in order to succeed. Old records, failures, etc. will have to be out-the-door and new programs implemented that are time-tested and proven. The current players are learning in the fire and if they make it through they will end up with the most experienced team in the area.

Will they win Friday night? It's possible and I hope it happens. No self respecting fan would wish failure on their team in order to get rid of staff, coaches, players, etc. Good luck to the team for the rest of the season.

Thanks Sandman. I hope you have better luck convincing these football guru's on here than I have.

Go look at the rest of the teams in the division, compare scores/opponents and you will see for yourself.
I wasn't making an uninformed statement.

Oh I figure you will!!! and you have the right to your opinion as I do mine. But why make it a public post? There are players that and students that view this board. How do you think that makes them feel when they read that? They don't need to be toldthey are struggling, they know they are. If they ever do, and trust me they will one day succeed, I will be curious to how that some of you on here will react. RV has been a kicking post for years, and I for one am tired of it. Those kids practice just as hard as anyone else, they play just as hard as anyone else, and the coaching staff works just hard as any, so why ???? I hope you enjoy youself, but I would hate that I had to put someone down in order to feel better about myself.

Should we give you a trophy now too? Grow up if you can't take some criticism then don't read it.

RVFAN, I want to see RV succeed in a big way. That being said, they're still the worst team in D4.

Triplett was not forced out when he left. I'm certain he chose to leave RV and go to Oak Hill.
Could it be he saw the writing on the wall for those next 4 years??? :122246 :122246

I think Sandman hit the nail on the head... opening SG and the loss of several athletes through open enrollment were major factors that led to the 4 consecutive winless seasons. I saw a few of those games and RV had their share of chances to win. Throw in a few more athletes on those teams and you are looking at some seasons of near .500 records.
Put Donnie Johnson on Deel's first two teams and add 2-3 more wins per season. That 6-4 team and you are looking at least 8-2 and a play off team.
No comment on the lack of administrative support.

I don't really know what to think about this one, neither team has really shown any signs of life to this point. I picked RV the last two weeks and they didn't pull through so I'm going with South Point this week.

Let me tell you why we fell apart in "03 and missed the playoffs. We had no clue how o finish and deal with the possibility of actually making it. The winning culture was not instilled. The players or coaches simply could not handle the pressure and we crumbled. Deep down, we had doubts that we were good enough because of the horrible seasons of recent years. Much like the Chicago Cubs, every person involved with RV football was waiting for the collapse and it happened. It is sad but true. We all wanted it, but the winning attitude was not there. It is sad but true. To this day I still wonder what it would have been like to play in week 11.

For years, everybody thought that the sucking sound in the hallways at RV was coming from the power plants, but it was really the sound talent being pulled out of RV and down the Ohio River...

Well said. I hope people understand that this program can improve and Coach McClelland will be able to do good things if he is given the opportunity and time to do so. There are no excuses for losses, but a lot of folks on here throw out harsh criticism without thinking of the consequences. I have been guilty of this myself in the past. The sad thing that some folks on here dont know a thing about the game and instead blast coaching staffs, kids, and communities. Support the players and the staff and promote hard work, discipline and values. I dont own a crystal ball but I really believe wins will come down the road. Win or lose, football players take with them life long lessons about life, family, work ethic and passion! Thats what makes Friday night football so great!

I have relatives and related to some students at RV i want them to win as much as Blue, when i go watch them one thing is glaring out! They to change some DEFENSIVE COACHES! They also neet to play Bull in the ring for about 2 weeks in practice, they simply don't hit and can't tackle or do they know how to read on defense,no one stays home on screens or counters, they are killed by the cutback.
I watch and read what people write they haven't seen the team play.

TIME TO VENT!!!
So if you want it in a nut shell " They need to learn how to RUN BLOCK and HOLD BLOCKS and FINISH! The COACHES need to STOP TRYING TO BE TEXAS TECH and PASS ON EVERY DOWN they need to be BALANCED,kids need to LEARN HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL not run a HIGH POWERED OFFENSE with young kids.
DEFENSE! NEW COACH! BE PHYSICAL,RUN FAST HIT HARD,WRAP UP!
COACHES please GET BACK TO BASICS start with DEFENSE you can't BEAT ANYONE if you CAN'T STOP THEM.
Not picking on anyone,if these coaches want to turn this around they have to go back and teach fundamentals!! Sorry Guys your not coaching in college, teach these kids to play football!! BABY STEPS!! Not passing 70 percent of the time. Teach them to tackle and read on defense.

PLEASE??? It is all about the kids not anyone else remember that!!

I stayed until South Point got up 26-7 late in the 2nd half. RV has one of the smallest teams I've ever seen. They are wayy down, even by RV standards. South Point isn't a very good team, either; They're just bigger and stronger than RV and wore them down.
