2008 Outlook:
Defending champion Logan is looking to win the SEOAL championship for an unprecedented (in school history) 5th straight year. To achieve that goal, the purple and white will need to overcome a few injuries on their front line by having some talented younger players step up.

Junior Patrick Angle (6-1, 195) replaces his brother under center where Logan will show more diversity on offense by adding spread formations to their traditional pro-style I-formations. Senior Clay Morgan (5-10, 180) takes over for Justin Frye at tailback. Junior Mason Mays (5-11, 175), and seniors Jaush Huntsberger (5-10, 140) and Zach Adams (6-3, 205) will be the keys in the receiving corps.

Up front Logan will rely on senior guard Derek Shirey (5-11, 235) until classmates David Schneider (6-1, 270) and Weston Andy (6-2, 260) can return from injuries. Junior Bobby Russell (6-2, 250) is a returning starter at center.

Defensively, senior end Jon Neff (6-3, 225) along with senior D-linemen Cary MacLaughlin (5-10, 200) and Stephen Miller (6-1, 220) will lead the defensive line while Morgan and Adams wil flank junior Michael Snider (6-0, 200) at linebacker.

Mays and Huntsberger will lead the Chieftain secondary.

Great breakdown, Locos. Should be an exciting season. Of course, the first game will be the toughest. I still think Logan plays hard and either beats or scares them pretty good. Look for another playoff run.

1987 -

Sometimes size can be overrated though. Give me a smaller kid with great technique and a desire to hit and I think you'll be in good shape. Hilliard Davidson won a state championship two years ago with a line that averaged 230-240 in division one and knocked off teams that averaged 260-280 across the front.

But, the Chiefs have two good, experienced linemen who may be unavailable. It's an opportunity though for two other linemen to step up. They both (and others) played very well in the scrimmage on Friday night. They'll get tested for real this week, and I'm anxious to see how they perform.

Logan has good team speed again in 2008. They may even be slightly faster than the 2007 edition. However, they were thoroughly out speeded against Lancaster last season and will NEED to be faster this fall.

The defense is speedy. Sports Illustrated just ran an article detailing how smaller but faster D-linemen can help slow the spread offense. They do this by disrupting the timing of the spread. That is what you are going to see from Logan this year. On offense, don't underestimate those boys taking other's places on the line. They basically handled Lancaster's freshman team a couple of years ago. You can't measure heart. I read on other posts that Logan has to do it on the field. I agree with that. All I'm saying is don't be surprised if you read the Logan Daily on Saturday the 23rd and it says Logan has initiated Chieftain Field with a victory.

Ironton.....

The Alabama of Ohio high school football. Once great, now insignificant, unless you talk to their own fans.

Neither one can even sniff a league/conference championship let alone anything else.

Now THAT'S funny.

Ironton 11-11 in their last 22 games. If it was not PATHETIC it would be FUNNY.

Move over Tigers as you have learned there is a new sheriff in town.

Just got back from Thornville. I didn't see anything once the second teams came in, so here is a run down of the Varsity segment.

Both teams are going to have good seasons, and really played pretty even tonight IMO. Patrick Angle was not as sharp tonight as he was last week, but Sheridan was a much better opponent than Circleville was last week.

Sheridan scored first on a 95 yard drive that last 19 plays. There were only 2 pass attempts on the drive. Sheridan twice converted on 3rd and 10+ thanks to sloppy tackling by the Logan defense. Sheridan scored on a 34-yard run.

Logan came back on the next play, on a 14-play 70 yard drive capped by a 37-yard pass from Patrick Angle to Jaush Huntsberger.

It looked like neither team would score again until Logan was intercepted and the Generals returned the ball to the Logan 25. Five plays later the Generals QB scored on a sneak on 4th down.

Logan's final score came when Jon Neff got a chance under center with first team "O" against the Sheridan 1st team "D." Neff connected with Zach McDaniel (or Huntsberger) for a 51 yard completion to the one yard line. McDaniel punched it in on a power play to cap the scoring.

Logan committed too many penalties, but did a lot of shuffling up front on offense. There is a lot of work to do before next week, but I think the coaches will get a lot out of the film from tonight.

Here are final stats:

1st Downs: Logan 12, Sheridan 10
Plays: Logan 37, Sheridan 32
Rushes-Yards: Logan 21-108; Sheridan 28-169
Passing Yards: Logan 141, Sheridan 11
Total Yards: Logan 249, Sheridan 180
Completions/Attempts/INT: Logan 10-16-1; Sheridan 1-4-0
Penalties: Logan 7-61; Sheridan 1-5
Fumbles Lost: Logan 0, Sheridan 1

Just got back from Thornville as well. Man there was some hitting going on out there tonight. Locus you are the man with those quick stats. We were trying to keep stats as well. I do have it a little different. I thought we did well tonight. Sheridan is a very good football team and will have a great year. Man they are fast. Their db's and linebackers are as good as any we will see this year, including Lancaster. I have Sheridan winning 2 touchdowns to 1 when Varsity starters were in. The bulk of our yardage and the second score came against alot of Sheridan second teamers. Overall a good test, and IMO we passed. Now lets get ready for the Gales. Most importantly, no serious injuries. We need to improve with our JV'S. Overall scrimmage score was 6 or 7 touchdowns for Sheridan to our 3. That is unacceptable.

Thanks for the rundown Locos. Awesome as always. It was killing me not to be there but family things come first. Looks like Logan will be in fine shape next week for the Gales. The Gales had a pretty good scrimmage against the Haven so it will definately be a real tough game but I still see Logan coming out on top.

Remember that because of the injuries to some of our guys up front, several of the JV kids are now working with the Varsity. I figure atleast three JV starters were rotating in with the Varsity instead of getting time in the JV scrimmage.

But I agree, I watch Sheridans first drive and they were just blowing our guys off the football in a bad way with the JVs in.
