HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
I was talking to boogerred's father-in-law, and he was telling me that the school district in Morgan had done away with pay for assistant coaches, and it got me to thinking.
What would happen if the State Department of Education dictated that public moneys could no longer be spent on coaching stipends? How many coaches would stop coaching? How many would have to stop coaching? How would such a decision affect the quality of coaching? How would it affect the "sports as part of education" process?

10k for head coaches for 4 months work isn't bad.
What head coaches in this area make $10,000 a year for coaching? I know ours is not even close to that.

Only teacher's who truly love the game would be left. That isn't so bad is it?

I don't think it would matter to much. I don't know a single football coach in Ohio who coaches for the money.

Over the last 3 years of coaching varsity football, I crunched the numbers and found out that I made between $1 to $2 per hour as an assistant football coach...(the range changes between regular season and off-season)
WOW!,,,No wonder you can can aford to pick up the tab on all them dinners we have before games

I am coaching at the wrong school then.
Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
They are already volunteers with the money they make.
Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
if they are volunteers then they probably give it back to their school district
why mess with pocket change and devote it to education
camps would be free right
``
maybe if they did kids wouldnt have to pay to ``PRACTICE``

High school football coaches in the south (i.e., Texas, Florida, Alabama) make at LEAST 100K per year. That is their job, period. They "teach" football. The downfall is...you HAD better win! If you are coaching a high school football team that plays in a stadium that holds 65, 000; there's going to be a huge electron microscope on you 24/7. I'd rather stay here and make 3K.
Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
some people around here make 35k to about 50k and have their noses in the air

Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
I think it would make many assistants at least rethink coaching. I never really cared about getting paid, b/c I volunteered for two seasons; but as I posted on the "Pay to Play" thread, getting the supplemental check and handing it to my wife at the end of football season sure made it easier to rationalize coaching.

While the hourly rate for coaching, when you break it down, isn't that much, the amount of money still can make a significant difference.
Based on gahs4ever's numbers and my teaching contract, I would make $8000 as head coach at GAHS and $4800 as an assistant football coach. In my experience, coaching stipends are paid as lump sums at the end of the season.
That still isn't anything to sneeze at, but going from a sizable bonus-type check to no compensation at all...
I do agree that nobody in SE Ohio is coaching football to get rich, but there is a quantum leap between getting paid anything and not getting paid anything at all.

Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
I have always heard it said, "I don't coach for the money, but I wouldn't do it for free."
Re: HYPOTHETICAL: What if all coaches had to be volunteers?
Most wouldn't do it for free. Just the cost of transportation to and from events associated with coaching a team is enough to warrant compensation.

gallipolis city schools pay bi weekly.
county schools pay when the sport is over
big diff in pay from city to county.

Wow... if you break up that pay over several pay periods, it would certainly remove the appeal that come s with the lump sum.
Gallipolis City is the first one I know of who actually does it that way. Curious, indeed.
Does the job then seem even less appealing when it is eeked out in that fashion?

no getting paid every two weeks is far better than getting a couny check on a 900 dollar salary and brin home about 6- 700 bux.
when the city schools take your taxes out every two weeks.
i was at the bottom and drew a 3,000 salary 7th grade.
varsity at rvhs 900 bux. it was more of a stepping stone for me. i wasnt to happy when that thing hit the mail. i was even a college student at the time. what a laugher
