Logan Vs. Athens Film Clip From 1957

Post by Omega »

Stumbled across this You Tube gem. Logan versus Athens from 62 years ago. The clip is interesting as to the style of play (wing-t and straight-t) and the size of the players. The youngest player in that game would now likely be at least 76 years old.

Ole Gene Morgan was a senior then, Bolt. Running back. :) Tough running football mostly back then. Players look bigger than I imagined in this clip. Logan won 26-12 on the hill.

Gene was one of those guys that was good at anything he did. I can remember a basketball game where he got mad and took a open hand and slapped the floor and you could hear a pin drop for about 10 seconds.

That, my friends, is MAN football. None of this pansy pass attack we see today. Hard nosed, smashmouth football that left you sore and bruised the next day. I loved playing in an option offense.

...... Just a few years after the advent of the webbed suspension helmet and snap in leather ear pieces with at most a 2 bar facemask, long sleeve heavy jerseys with extra elbow padding stitched in was your norm. Bulky huge thigh and knee pads back then that actually went below the knee, hip pads that were hard plastic that were belt strapped on before you put on the pants and needed adjusted after every 3 or 4 plays, 3/4 inch metal cleats under heavy leather shoes (metal cleat marks left on your hands are like a badge of honor) and heavy shoulder pads that were usually too big or too small but you took what the coach had available with the best players getting first dibs !!!!! There was no under armour, no lightweight uniforms, no rubber or lightweight shoes, no various position player shoulder pads, no air helmets, tricep pads, hand pads, rib pads and definitely no fans, heaters, Gatorade, turf fields nor were there 6 coaches, 2 trainers and 20 other folks running around on the sidelines all game long. I don't know how they survived back then !!!!! :o

Ole Mark was a good linebacker. Little bigger than Gene and Jeff.

"1950's SEOAL" - Jackson had 4 titles and 1 co-title, Wellston had 2 titles and 1 co-title, Logan had 1 title and 1 co-title, Athens had 1 title and Pomeroy had 1 co-title. Pretty good parity back in the day.

Chieftains beat the Greyhounds on the "Hilltop" that year 32-13.

Was it a grand-son that played football during the time the league had 10 teams? Think he had the only TD in the Ironton game played there in the rain?

Yes - Clay Morgan scored the lone TD against Ironton in the rain after Justin Frye hurt his ankle the week before. Long screen pass.

Clay's paternal grandfather was Gene Morgan - his maternal grandfather was Jim St. Clair - so a pair of LHS hall of famers for grandpas!

I had forgot about the St. Clair's. At one time they only lived a block from me.
