Phillips, Votto, and Bruce make the all-star team. Surprised Cordero didn't make the team.

I was just saying that last season more than a few people on here thought Coco was done and wanted him gone. He had some injury's and also hit a rough patch........ Hitters aren't the only ones in baseball who go through slumps. I said they should stick with Coco and he would be back to his old self. I wasn't trying to call anyone out, just sayin...

gahs4ever wrote:You misunderstood us about Cordero. He makes something like $16M a year and for a team with a payroll in the $70Ms, that represents quite a hit for a guy who might only get into one game a week, if that.

I am one of the old farts who believe the role of "closer" is over rated. and in the case of the Reds, I believe we have several who could serve as closer-by-committee.
Tell that to the Yankees! Mariano Rivera is arguably the best closer of all time! Not a Yankees fan but there is no way you can say he and his role was/is over rated.

No one should compare the Yankees, Red Sox and the Chicago teams (even though they can't win) to many other teams. The big cities can do what the heck they want with $ and some of them will still never win but that's another story. Getting back to the closer role, I'm with forever in that "closers" are overrated along with middle relief and set-up man also. These guys today throw one inning every other day and it's made to look like they're so tired and have pitched 3 times in one week. I'm old school to and can't see giving these guys $15 - $16 million a year to pitch 40 innings total in a year. As far as Rivera goes, he ought to have the records because until 30 years ago you didn't have all these pitchers like they do now. He's saved a lot of games but he pitches for a team over the years that had a lot of gigantic leads when he came in and that helps. He had a four run lead against the Reds a couple weeks ago when they came into town, was brought in for a save oppurtunity and gave up two runs I believe but still got the save. It's awful nice when you play for a team that can score runs every year and "purchase" almost any position player every year when they need one. A starter used to go until he started getting hit and then it was usually one guy that came in to relieve him. Now, you have 4 or 5 guys pitch in a game. New wave, new game, big $$$. Whatever it takes I guess.

That $16M could buy a lot of talent including a #1 starter.

Real baseball is just like Fantasy in the sense that if you have a budget and put too many eggs into 1-3 players you might shortchange yourself in another area.
I'm not comparing the Yankees to the Reds...I am simply stating the importance of a closer.

Coco is worth what he is being paid and it was the right thing to do. The Reds have money not Redsox or Yankee money but the ownership has money to spend when needed.

A blown 6 run lead tonight. So much for the middle relief, set-up men and closers. As stated above numerous times, OVERRATED. You might as well leave the starters in, they can't do any worse than most teams bullpens do nowadays. Too many teams, pitching is watered down today (and has been for years) and the hitters have a field day.

Baker is more concerned with trying to get Cordero a save instead of worrying about the Reds winning the game. It is a shame all the Reds pitchers pitched well until Coco came in and blew the save. We all watched this story three times in the last four days. We can only hope the Reds get rid of Baker and Cordero after the all star break.
