Bengals Draft

Post by SGHS RBEBELS15 »

Their first pick is going to be in the low 20's. i think they need help on offense a WR or even a QB. I was thinking a guy like Golden Tate thoughts :?:

I agree with Golden Tate, he might not have the size but he has the speed to get down the field for the long ball, and thats what Cincy needs, a deep threat to force defenses to relax on the blitz.

The receiver does not have to be the deep threat but they need to have great hands and run great routes. Dependablity is something that is needed. Tate is good and the receiver from Bowling Green Freddie Barnes who set record for the most catches in a season. Including 22 catches for 278 yards in one game. He is one of those players who catches everything that can be picked up later in the draft. Some hometown people may want Mardy Gilyard. Whoever they get for receiver they need to check his skills out well.
Will Chase Coffman as a TE be able to contribute next year? A good TE is on most good teams and helps the QB out on 3 and short plays.
Defensive line depth and safety help.
They say most QB's will be drafted late in the draft so they may pick one up late. Tony Pike maybe around.
Hopefully they can also find an Offensive Coordinator.

As far as first round picks go I can see them taking one of these three players!
1.Marvin Austin-DT-North Carolina
2.Ricky Sapp-OLB-Clemson
3.Mardy Gilyard-WR-Cincinatti

I think Tate will be gone and if Spikes is still on the board they might go after him to.

Of the receivers mentioned on this thread, Tate is ranked #3 behind Dez Bryant of Okla St, and Arrelious Benn of Illinois.

This is not projected to be as talented or as deep a draft as recent ones so value for the pick becomes even more precious.

Others mentioned on this thread are BGSU's Freddie Barnes #17. Mardy Gilyard of Cincinnati is projected #4 according to NFL draft dog.com

My personal pick for the Browns (not in the first two rounds is QB Dan Lefevour of Central Michigan. 6'3" 226#
Threw for 12,905 yds with 102 TD and only 36 INT, and rushed for another 2948 yds with an additional 47 TDs.

Only player in NCAA FBS history with 12000 passing yards and 2500 rushing (yeah, that includes Vince Young and Michel Vick).

Only the 2nd player in NCAA history to throw for 3000 in a season and rush for 1000. The other? Vince Young!

Owns every MAC passing record first set by Chad Pennington, then Byron Leftwich, and most recently Ben Roesthlisberger.

I want him Bad, and he is only projected #6 among QBs coming out.

I think the Browns would be better if they drafted Lefevour, but will he get the chance to sit and learn the O, or will they get frustrated with Quinn and play him?

I would love to see the Bengals have just as good if not better draft than last year. I think they should either look at WR, or QB the first round. I would also like to see them draft Rolando McClain from Alabama. This guy is an absolute beast! He has excellent leadership skills and can run a defense. At the WR position, 2 guys in my mind pop out, Notre Dame stud Golden Tate and Hometown favorite, Marty Gilyard. Both of these guys have all the intangibles to be a tremendous WR in the NFL.

The receiver DOES need to be a deep threat. That's what they were missing once Henry was lost with the broken arm!

When he left, the entire offense had trouble producing the rest of the year.

Safties could play within 12 yards of the line.
Linebackers could pin their ears back and blitz with the safty help.
The run game suffered because of the increased pressure in the middle.
And the other wr's couldn't get off their CBs because of more bump and run.

If Palmer had a deep option, the Bengals would still be in the playoffs, and might have gotten a first round bye!

I have to agree with this. The Bengals were not the same team after Henry went out. I think his presence allowed Benson to get the runs he had. All this talk about the Bengals being a running team are true only if they can stretch the defense to open the lanes up. Without that stretch threat, they are now watching the rest of the playoffs at home.

The Bengals swept the division, but went 1-5 against the rest of the AFC.

Next years scheudule is this:
Steelers twice
Ravens twice
Browns twice
Patriots
Jets
Dolphins
Bills
Colts
Chargers
Tampa Bay
Atlanta
Carolina
New Orleans

The schedule gets harder, and they likely won't sweep the division two seasons in a row.

I think you could "pencil in" around 7 wins next year.

And the difference between another playoff run and the first back to back winning seasons
since the 70's (only non-strike years really count), will be how they handle the tougher games.

Bengals 1988 Summary
The Bengals brought about one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history by rising from their 4-11 finish of 1987 to a 12-4 regular-season record. They won the AFC Central Division title, and defeated Buffalo, 21-10, for the AFC Championship on Jan. 8 (1989). On Jan. 22 (1989), they appeared in their second Super Bowl and lost, 20-16, to San Francisco when the 49ers scored a touchdown with 34 seconds remaining in the game. Coach Sam Wyche's team posted a 14-5 mark in regular and postseason play, best in the NFL. Wyche received numerous honors for his brilliant coaching and nine Bengals were selected for the Pro Bowl — QB Boomer Esiason, NT Tim Krumrie, OT Anthony Muñoz, G Max Montoya, TE Rodney Holman, WR Eddie Brown, RB James Brooks, S David Fulcher and CB Eric Thomas. Esiason was voted the NFL's Most Valuable Player. In January of '88, LB Reggie Williams received the "Sportsman of the Year" award from Sports Illustrated. Rookie "Ickey" Woods led the Bengals in rushing with 1066 yards.

1988 SEASON LEADERS
Passing: Boomer Esiason (388 Att, 223 Comp, 3572 Yds, 57.5 Pct, 28 TD, 14 Int, 97.4 Rating)
