I would never vote for coaches to took the last two weeks off with superior teams so that eliminates Caldwell and Payton. Had the Colts continued to play hard the last two weeks, Caldwell would have gotten serious consideration from me because in a lot of ways he put up his record with mirrors; ie hving no running game and not being able to stop the run. All He had was Manning and he rode that horse to 14-0.

Whisenhunt gets votes because Super Bowl losing teams often dont even make the playoffs the following year.

Lewis got a lot of sympathy votes beause of all the distractions around the two in house deaths, but the fact remains that the Bengal collapsed badly the last half and limped into the playoffs. He is barely more than a .500 coach lifetime with two winning seasons in Cincy to show for his body of work. I know I will get bashed for that assessment, but it is what it is.

Mike McCarthy did a nice job with the Packers this year and should get some votes. Phillips should get coach of the year just because he has to put up with Jerry Jones every day.

1. Turner
2. Whisenhunt
3. McCarthy
4. Caldwell

Yea ,right. I wouldnt expect nothing less from a browns fan . Marv took a team that only won four games ,than took they to playoffs, sweep divison. They should just give it to the browns coach ,he won one more game than last year. major victory in clevland. :122246

At least I am honest in my appraisal of the Browns and dont attempt to sugarcoat them (see my thread). The Bengals DID limp into the playoffs and as a result the same talking heads who were on their bandwagon early on saw the writing on the wall and got off before the Bengals first (and last) playoff game.

I know the Bengals are much improved from the 90s and the litany of poor coaches and even poorer players, and Marvin Lewis has brought about a culture change in attitude and respect. However, he has had only two winning seasons (in what, seven years?) and is still searching for that elusive first playoff win in 20 years. Take off your Bengal orange colored glasses for a moment and you would realize I only speak the truth.

In my mind, Lewis and the Bengals have plateaued and Im sure you realize that the window of opportunity doesnt stay open forever. BTW, my runner up for COY, Whisenhunt, got plastered today by the Saints. Upgrade Payton...downgrade Whisenhunt. Likewise Caldwell shattered the Ravens, so move him up to #2.

Winning a division, while going undefeated within that division is hardly limping into the playoffs. ;-)

I dont think you always speak truth. I think you have an opinion. You said in earlier posts bengals would not win the divison (truth or opinion) You said bengals would not do good because they havent learned anything from pitt. You said they have to run the ball and they havent (truth or opinion). So they did win the divison and you said they wouldnt. They did learn to run the ball and you said wouldnt. And as for being a browns fan, your the first to try and dump on the bengals. Look at how many other teams you dump on. Bengals is in your 80 percent range. Why dont you start on . ,lets say the rams , yea i dont see any post on them .
There is no truth when it comes to predicting the future. Anything can happen.

It goes to show we all have opinions.

You see, unless you are looking to limp in with a wild card, you have to beat the teams in your own division first and foremost. Defense and a strong running game are the foundations. To suggest that the Bengals rise in defense from last to 12th is on par with the #1 Steeler defense is a stretch and is IMO the biggest gap between the two clubs. Takeaways is another consideration.

Pittsburgh

Baltimore

The rest out of the playoffs

I thought pro sports was a copy cat thing where everyone took the blueprint from the league champion and did it themselves? I see no similarity in either front office, coaching, or players to suggest that either Cincy or the Browns have learned a single thing from the Steelers

The 12th best defense means there are 11 better defenses in the league. That is the math! And I wonder how many of those 11 better defenses have to play the Steelers and Ravens twice a year, which is 1/4 of the regular season....more math!

I still cant get past the fact that third place in the North is out of the playoffs just like fourth place is

browns by 2 games.
hasn't everyone heard this one yea the bengals will be good this year, and make the playoffs, whoops the suck it up again and palmer is a bust!!!!!!

Fine but both teams are below the Steelers and the Ravens IMHO. Much as I like the Browns, they're still years away fom contending AND SO ARE THE BENGALS.

As long as Pittsburgh is in the Div this is a stupid question. Only a Bengals or Browns fan could gloat about being out of the playoffs as long as they finish ahead of the other team.
i just love how everyone puts the browns last.

u just watch they'll suprise you.
The Bengals were looking at at least a top 3 pick in the draft before winning their last three games when they were already out of contention

Here is some of your truths . because you said you only speak the truth

NEW YORK -- Marvin Lewis had much more than game plans to deal with this season.

Lewis won The Associated Press 2009 NFL Coach of the Year award for guiding his team to the playoffs during a season marked by tragedy.

NFL Coach of the Year voting
Coach Team Votes
Marvin Lewis Bengals 20½
Sean Payton Saints 11½
Norv Turner Chargers 9
Jim Caldwell Colts 7
Andy Reid Eagles 1
Ken Whisenhunt Cardinals 1
The Bengals won the AFC North with a 10-6 record, just their second division title since 1990, both under Lewis. They did so despite the deaths of wide receiver Chris Henry and Vikki Zimmer, the wife of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Several players' families also were directly affected by the tsunami in the Samoan Islands.

For holding his team together under such circumstances and leading a turnaround from a 4-11-1 record in 2008, Lewis earned 20 1/2 votes Saturday from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. He beat Sean Payton of New Orleans (11 1/2), Norv Turner of San Diego (9) and Jim Caldwell of Indianapolis (7). Andy Reid of Philadelphia and Ken Whisenhunt of Arizona had a single vote each.

"I'm flattered," said Lewis, whose seventh season as Bengals coach ended with a 24-14 home loss to the Jets in the wild-card round. "I never took any credibility to it, that it could occur, but I am flattered. I would trade it to still be playing.

"To me, this is more a recognition of the organization, for the coaching staff and the hard work they've done, and for the players."

Few coaches have dealt with such a season of grief. Vikki Zimmer, who used to bake treats for the players, died unexpectedly in October. Two weeks earlier, defensive linemen Jonathan Fanene and Domata Peko and rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga struggled to contact family in American Samoa after the tsunami devastated the region.

In December, wide receiver Chris Henry, on injured reserve with a broken left forearm, fell from the back of a pickup truck after an argument with his fiancee and was killed.

So Lewis was as much a therapist and psychologist for his team as he was a strategist.

"Just look at that load right there he's beared," veteran guard Bobbie Williams said. "With Chris, Vikki Zimmer, the Samoan Islands. ... There's been a lot of weight on his shoulders, and through the not-so-good seasons when it seemed like the world might have been crashing down, he's been that rock for the team and for the city. ... When you look at it, you're like, 'Dang, that's a lot, that's a lot.' But you know what? He's still there and he's still rolling and he's still coach."

And he's Coach of the Year, the first for the Bengals since the team's founder, Paul Brown, won the award in 1970.

"Our coaches did a great job of helping through those times and being there in support of Mike and his family, support of the players through the tsunami, and then with Chris' death and how that affected certain guys," Lewis said. "All that being said, I think again the credit should come to the entire group because they did this. I think we had a good group of leadership."

Those team leaders credit Lewis for changing the environment in Cincinnati. There were far fewer unchecked egos this season, and the influx of youth worked well.

"Marvin's really gotten better with gauging our team, and a lot of it is because he knows our individual players," quarterback Carson Palmer said. "He knows when to back off, he knows when to put shoulder pads on, he knows when to hold us longer for meetings, he knows when to get us out of practice earlier. And that's a head coach's main job, to get his team ready to play on Sundays."

The Bengals certainly were ready in the first half of the schedule, going 7-2 and sweeping Pittsburgh and Baltimore to take command of the division. They faltered down the stretch, losing three of their final four -- all against playoff teams.

But how many teams wouldn't have struggled under all the adversity handled the Bengals?

"He knows real life," Peko said. "He was able to not only be our coach but a father and mentor to some of us

The bengals won only 4 games in 87 and went to superbowl in 88. It has happened before. Bengals had 23 players on ir in 2008. They had a good team but were all out on ir. I would not say where a team would be next year . Heck it could be cleveland in first. You can give your opinion, but if you only speck in facts and truth. You cant really say.
You can talk around it . but its there in black and white. And some times you can read between the lines . :122249 as for mountains out of mole hills. Someone has to keep you honest.

I guess we will have to take it one sentance at a time

Fine but both teams are below the Steelers and the Ravens IMHO. Much as I like the Browns, they're still years away fom contending AND SO ARE THE BENGALS.

If the bengals are below the steelers and ravens. how did thay beat them twice ????? There is no question marks ethier. Years from contending ?????? Do you notice bengals is in bold. Why wasnt the browns in bold ?????
You can read into sentances more if there in bold . Just the truth, no taking about other things .

Or you just want me to quit now .

What Marvin did THIS YEAR, with the loss of TJ, the death of a player, and the death of a coaches wife.
Makes him the most deserving of the bunch.

This award is coach of the year, not Coach of the past 7 years. What Marvin had or hadn't done in the past 7 years,
doesn't make a single bit of difference.

Norv Turner has more talent, and plays in a weaker division, so what part of this season's performance makes him a more
viable option than Lewis. And, you can't consider your blinding hatred for the Bengals.

Face it, if the Browns coach would have faced the exact same circumstances,
and gotten the exact same results, you'd have set the river on fire if he HADN'T won the coach of the year award.

the fact he did not have to bail anyone out of the joint is reason enough to give him coach of the year.
