You be the GM, NFL Style.

Post by seofan_via_dublin »

Talk radio, and this sports forum has got me interested in how people think a team should be built.
So let's all travel to Hypothetical land (not a long trip for some Browns fans...just kidding).

Your the newly hired GM for a brand new NFL team.

You get to pick one head coach.
--He must be someone who can coach currently. (no Lombardi, or Landry, not even Ditka)
--They can be out of the league right now, but should be only 3 years removed from coaching at the most.
You get to pick one current player of you choice.
-- Can be anyone, offensive, defensive, or special teams.
--Your not limited by salary, or who he currently plays for.
--Keep in mind, you're an expansion team. You're not going to be great for at least 4 years.
--You might want to consider younger players with more upside, than a guy who will retire before you get good.
--But you can only pick one
Finally, you get one draft pick
--Let's call it the #1 pick.
--Must be a player in this years draft class

How would you build the start of your team, and why?

Coach:
Current Player:
Draft Pick:

I like defensive football. I think if the defense can hold a team to less than 12 points, then any offense in the NFL should
have a chance to win a game. I also like a balanced offensive attack, that will put up some points, but will manage the clock,
and limit the turnovers.

For those reasons my picks are:

Coach: Bill Cowher
Current Player: Darelle Rivas
Draft Pick: Ndomakong Suh

Head Coach: Mike Shanahan

Current Player: Reggie Bush

Draft Pick: Navorro Bowman- Penn ST.

I picked Shanahan because he had a knack for finding guys that can tote the rock. He is a smart coach and well respected among the players in the league.

I decided to go with Bush as my current player pick because he can line up almost anywhere. You can line him up in the back field or out wide. He is an excellent K/P returner also.

For my draft pick I really wanted to build from linebacker out. Bowman is a solid Linebacker who is ready to play now and has a really good understanding of the game.

My first priority would be to concentrate on Defense and SP teams. If you can build a solid D and have a good K/P, solid sp coverage and a solid return game then you will be able to stay in most games. That would give me time to build the Offense and find a franchise QB.

Coach: Tony Dungy (If I am going to have a young team, Dungy is the best coach to lead them and make sure they stay on target both on and off the field.)
Current Player: Ed Reed ( I know he isn't "young" but I need a defensive leader with a young team)
Draft Pick: Ndomakong Suh ( You can tell what side of the ball I am taking care of first.)

No one explains why they pick who!! Why don't we tell each other why we would draft that guy or hire that coach........?

Instead of saying I want this coach
Draft this player
and sign this player how about explaining why to!!!!!

Holmgren's a great coach, I like his style and drive. Polomalu is a game changer, offenses fear him and try to run away from him. J. Stewart is a beast of a rb, just hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves...yet. I also watched him play ball in H.S. Hell, he had 200 + yards on us before the half. Barring injury, he's going to make quite a name for himself in the nfl.

Tebow....I like my QB to be big and tough, Elway type guys.

I picked Cowher & Suh for the same reasons SEO did. If you have a decent defense you will be probably be in most games with a chance to win.

I also picked Rodgers because to me, he is the best young QB in the NFL. Green Bay isn't exactly a hot bed of offensive talent & to see the numbers he puts up game in & game out is impressive. He is also a tough kid and I think could handle being throw around(lets face it, an expansion team isn't going to have a good O-Line for a few years(see Houston & Carr). I think he could handle being on the ground a lot better than Phillip Rivers could. Rodgers is also very young(compared to Manning, Brady, etc).

I would agree with Dubs but I wonder if Cowher would ever have the patience to coach a expansion team. Most great NFL guys will tell you to start your team with great CB's and great OT's.

Coach: Tony Dungy
--Best coach who is currently not coaching. He is just phenomenal. I like his style and would develop young players.

Current Player: Ryan Clady or Joe Thomas and I could make a case for Darrelle Revis
--Flat out, they are the best OTs in the game. Additionally, I do not want to build around a RB or another skill position player without the ability to protect. Give me a great O-line and an average RB and Im doing fine. The thinking with Revis is that he is the best cover corner in the game and will shut down one side of the field.

Draft Pick: Eric Berry
--In my opinion, he has the potential to be the best safety to ever play the game. He will be Polamalu and Reed level within two years.

Coach: Tony Dungy
The man can make a mountain out of any mole hill. He is the reason Payton Manning is amazing.

Current Player: Mark Sanchez
For a rookie, he showed a lot of brawl throughout the playoffs. Determinately so, Tony would be an excellent coach for him and his skills would explode exponentially.

Draft Pick: Ndomakong Suh
That man is a beast. Defense would flourish with him anchoring the end and then Sanchez would have the ball longer.

Did you ever stop to think maybe Manning is the reason Dungy is so great?

Dungy did well in Tampa, but couldn't get an offense to play like his defense.
Chucky comes in and wins a superbpwl, by holding his offense as accountable as his D.

Dungy goes to Indy, where is offense is already set up to win, and makes the Defense be more accountable.

To say that Dungy is the reason Peyton is great, is severly overstating the impact of Tony Dungy on the Colts.
