VINCE MCMAHON AND SYFY PRESIDENT COMMENT ON LAUNCH OF NXT, MORE DETAILS ON WWE'S PLANS FOR NEW SERIES

By Mike Johnson on 2010-02-16 10:20:10

Entertainment trade publication Variety featured an article today about the end of ECW on SyFy and the creation of WWE NXT, which will debut next week in the old ECW timeslot.

In the article, NXT's concept was described as, "a reality show that revolves around the company's newest roster of grapplers", which PWInsider.com broke several weeks ago. The series would pair eight WWE stars with eight rookies, which goes along with the details we heard last week about current WWE stars "mentoring and hindering" to new talents. The article noted that Vince McMahon had 12 potential teams as of last week, but would ultimately go with eight.

"This is an opportunity to show another side you've never seen," Vince McMahon told Variety, which noted the company would open themselves up to show how they operate as part of the series.

There will be several seasons over the course of the next year, as talents make their way to the Raw or Smackdown brands, or fail to achieve their goals.

"These kids crash and burn a lot," McMahon said. "By putting them into this environment we'll find out if they can make it. There's no better way to develop skills than being in front of an audience. And that makes for good television."

The article noted that ECW on SyFy had debuted in 2006 with a 2.79 rating but had dropped to a 1.0. Noting the roots of the Extreme Championship Wrestling, Variety claimed that under WWE's current PG rated programming, "edgier bouts like barbed-wire matches and fans throwing chairs into the ring for wrestlers to use on their opponents" didn't jibe with WWE's mentality for television.

"Syfy is excited to continue our partnership with WWE, Vince and his team with this innovative live event-reality show," said Syfy president Dave Howe. "The 'NXT' rookies take the challenge of our new tagline 'Imagine Greater' to heart as they embark on their ultimate dream quest to be the next generation of revered heroes and champions in the fantastic arena of the WWE."

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It sounds interesting. 8 veterans mentoring 8 rookies that combines wrestling with reality tv. And since there will be "several seasons over the course of the next year" we should see a shakeup of who is on this show.

I wonder how many of the rookies will "graduate" to RAW or Smackdown and how many will fail?

I saw this on a blog.....

NXT looks to have a very impressive roster. For people not familiar with the names:
- Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) and Kaval (Low-ki). These 2 dont need any introduction if you are a real wrestling fan.
- Justin Angel. Trained by Mark Sloan, came from the same place as the brits in WWE (drew, sheamus, burchills etc). His style is like Evan Bourne, except that he is about 5 inches taller. Already has like 12+ years experience.
- Joe Hennig & Brett DiBiasi, known as the tagteam “Fortunate Sons”. They are 2nd/3rd generation, so they will probably go far. Hennig is a very good wrestler (not as good as his farther though), but lacks his fathers charisma.
- Heath Slater: think about a younger version of Edge. Still has a lot to learn, but so did Edge when he made his debut.
- Michael Tarver. Has/had some boxer kind of gimmick in FCW. I didnt initially like him when he was in Byron Saxton’ stable, but he is improving fast.
- others: Skip Sheffield & Darren Young
