Goodell wants a new stadium in Atlanta

Atlanta likely will have to build a new stadium if it wants to host another Super Bowl, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday.

The Falcons have been pushing for a new facility to replace the 18-year-old Georgia Dome, which hosted the title game in 1994 and 2000. Goodell was in the city to attend a Thursday night game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Goodell reiterated his top priorities are securing a new labor agreement and doing all he can to protect players. The league already has cracked down on helmet-to-helmet hits with hefty fines.

The contract with the players runs out in March. If a new agreement can't be reached, the 2011 season could be in jeopardy

After 18 years they want to scrap the dome? They have hosted many events there for various sports and other things since being built. Is this in response to the new mega stadiums built in Dallas and New York? Things seem to go well when Atlanta hosts. Maybe they do not have enough luxury boxes for big money people. If a stadium is not good enough for a Super Bowl then why is it good enough for regular season games.

To me this is just the NFL being the NFL again. I would just guess that Atlanta has more things in their dome than the older Superdome in New Orleans.

Thats stupid! There is nothing wrong with the Georgie Dome. The Falcons will double ticket prices if they biuld a new Stadium. The NFL doesn't b*tch about the SuperDome. They did work to fix it up after Katrina and it still is a crappy place to watch anything.

wow 18 years old. what an outdated relic. my home is 50 years old and all this time i thought it was a classic.

just for the sake of starting a rumor.... Carolina has the youngest team in the NFL after getting rid of most of the veterans. even with all the injuries the owner insists on avoiding any high priced help. i believe he is a key player in the new labor deal. NOW having said that.... does he expect a lockout so he is slashing his costs this season? is he considering a midnight move to greener pastures? or he is alot smarter than everyone else and believes alot of top notch talent will suddenly be looking for a home after the new deal opens doors for FA's and he wants plenty of room left for a wild spending spree? any thoughts????

LA has a lot of people but they have proved they do not care much for NFL football to support a team. They are a college town for football. They support teams that are winning and like basketball they are a late showing up crowd. Part of that is the traffic headaches in the area.
California already has 3 teams and the State is BROKE so they should not even be mentioned to help fund a stadium in anyway.

The NFL wants and wants but will not help the former players who sacrificed their health for the NFL. But the NFL wants to add more games.

If I were Atlanta I'd say, "Sure, we'll build it if you put up ALL the money and let us pay it off over 50 years."

They just had a show Outside the Lines on ESPN where they brought in people to talk about why a team should be in LA. One of the main reasons is we are the second biggest tv market. But what many talked about was more like they have a right to a team. Then if they have a team they could again have a Super Bowl. So that the more money than brains people will not have to spend their money to go to other cities to watch the game. They think that it is terrible that they have to watch the game on TV.

One reason the NFL is not there is because of a stadium. They need a new stadium. They have 2 investors with plans one downtown by the Staples Center where many of the LA Pro teams already play and the other site 40 miles from downtown in an area called Industry. They say they have independent people to put the money up to build the stadiums. That did not address the extra money for the roads along with police force. California does not have extra money from the state.

They did mention the possible lockout next year and then the tv contract going out in 2012 as big holdups right now. There are teams that may go in San Diego and St Louis that seem to be the best bets to go LA. The Jacksonville owner has said he has been offered many times and wants to stay.

Just because there is a lot of people in LA does not mean they will support a team. LA tends to support their teams as long as they are winning only. Baseball going to Florida seemed like a great idea but look at the support. Part of that is the owners and part is they have other things to do. The NFL wants the right owner in LA. Even though since the teams have been out of LA the NFL has really grown. So to bad the Stars can not drive to a game and have their pictures taken in LA when most could care less about the game.
