These young adults, in my opinion, have exhibited poor values, and I agree with others, this can be blamed on their upbringings and what they've been taught by their parents. If you've not seen the interview with Posey's mother, go find it and read it. It was in the Dispatch a few days ago. It is glaringly obvious why he did what he did, when you read her words in an interview. Her attitude is disturbing.

Now, with the continuing decay of morals in society today, how do we avoid this in the future? No one has made any suggestion to stop this from occuring in the future, as it is apparent that something is going to have to be mandated, as these young adults can't be trusted, with what they are being taught at home. Here's my idea:

All team (e.g. gold pants) and individual awards (e.g. Sportsmanship Awards) be made property of the university and athletic department when they are earned, and are retained by the university until you graduate, or leave the university and relinquish your amatuer status. Frankly, I'd prefer, no graduation, no rewards, but that's just me being old fashioned. You get your gold pants after you graduate, or you are no longer considered an amatuer athlete. Once you are no longer part of the program, they are yours to sell........
How is it poor values that you sell something you think you earned? You cant mandate morals or values in a person. I watch Pawn Stars all the time and people bring in valuable history objects to sell and some of the things they sell I say to myself how can they part with that object, but its not mine I cant nor can the govt. say wait you cant sell that object. Look these are young adults who sometimes make bad choices and the choices they make sometimes have repercussions that they will have to live with. You cant tell them what choices to make all you can do is show them the way and its up to them to go in the right path. Whats that saying you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink.

The only way you should take something from these guys such as you are suggesting is if they do something that would get them kicked off the team. Other than that no matter if they play 1 year or 6 years as soon as they win them its theirs to keep and do with what they wish.

Obviously, your definition of values and mine are different. How much, doesn't really matter. You don't seem to get the point of my post.

My point is, since the NCAA has these archaic rules in place, don't put these kids in a position of having an opportunity to make a bad choice. Give them their awards once they are done with the football program, but not until then.

Frankly, I'd prefer that they give these "student athletes" a buckeye nut painted with gold spray paint and glitter, instead of giving them something with a resalable value.

They do away with these archaic rules, then it is Pawnstars galore, which you sound perfectly comfortable with. Until the rules are eliminated, what is your solution, because you have not put one out there with your last post. How about we just give them the cash equivalent of a pair of "gold pants" and call it a day? Seems like that is what you are proposing. Then, there is no question of values, morals, or ethics..... Screw tradition and what the "awards" are supposed to represent in terms of recognition of hard work and talent, and let the almighty $$$$$$$$ reign. (Yea, I know, that's a double standard today with these kids and what the true motive of the NCAA is all about)......

So basically you want to treat them as children and hold their hands for them tuill they get out of college then turn them loose to be adults.

Dont get me wrong I think its terrible they sold something that so many of us would cherish. I mean you can probably count on this board the number of people who would not like to have pair of those gold pants. My goodness I have a sweat band from college on my mantel with the score and date of the 1st time we beat our rival in college that I wouldnt give away for anything. Thats a $2 sweat band. Theres other like apprently these 5 that dont put stock in those type of things. Thats for them to decide not us.

You want a solution then I got a good one the NCAA should let the collegs give the student athletes a monthly paycheck of $1000 dollars for playing their sport. That way they do not need to sell personal items that they gained on the field through their hard work.

As I said, unless the NCAA abandons the archaic, and frankly, ridiculous rules, yes, we have to treat them like children. They have just shown with this most recent episode that unless you want to continue to experience violations of this nature, then you have no choice but to mandate that no one gets their prizes, until they are done.

Hey, I don't like that premise one bit, but change the rules, then there is no issue.

And tigercannon71, I actually agree with you to the point that these kids (and yes, they are kids), should receive a stipend monthly, outside of the housing allowance, that is for their discretionary spending. THAT, would solve a multitude of problems, and shut alot of people up about "hardships".

That being said, I have three in college right now, who have received some scholarship help, but nothing more than that. I have incurred debt, they have incurred debt, and no one is throwing them full room and board, plus tuition. We are making it work, and not claiming hardship. Nor is the hand out asking for any discretionary spending.

So, I do agree, that with the income that these "student athletes" raise for the school, there should be additional financial assistance, simply due to their sacrifice to the betterment of the athletic program. I guess I'd consider it profit-sharing.

My whole problem with this situation is how the NCAA has handled it.

The 5 players should not be able to play in the bowl game. End of story. No more punishment.

If Miles Brand were still running the NCAA, these players would have been dealt with in this season since there is a bowl game left to play. If OSU did not have a game left, then any penalty would be carried over into the next season. The Cam Newton situation would have been handled much differently too. By different, the investigation would have been finished before any announcement was made over Cam's ability to be able to play in anymore games.

I have all the respect in the word for Tressell. He runs a first class program. I do think he should suspend the 5 players for the bowl game but I can't blame him for not doing so because he is following the NCAA penalty by waiting for next year, if any of these players have a next year at OSU.

The NCAA has egg on their face, not OSU, Tressell or even the players.

Mister B I agree with you the players shouldn't play in the bowl game but as far as Miles Brand he was a joke. He ran Coach Knight off, who never cheated or bent the rules when it came to recruiting. Look where Indiana is now and who they replaced Knight with after Davis left. They brought a known cheater that had already been busted for cheating.

These actions didn't just recently happen, it's not like they decided that they had this stuff saved up and could unload some of it.

The rings, award, and gold pants that Pryor sold, happened after his freshman year.

From his perspective, he was going to get these things again, so why does he need to hold them sacred.

7 straight years Gold Pants have been handed out, and only once in the last decade did a team not get a set. Honestly, to these kids, they don't mean as much, because they know they'll get another pair next year.

It's not a position that I hold, and I'm sure that the overwhelming majority of their teammates still honor the tradition, but to some, they could just be yet another pair of gold pants.

Heck, Tyler Moller will have 6 pairs after next year!

maybe the tradition should should change to giving Gold Pants when the Bucs beat a SEC team --that way no one worries about Gold pants ! ( ba pop pop ding ) LOL . JK bucks fans, this situation s u c k s and if Tres would run them off I'd have a very very difficult time ever saying anything bad the buckeyes. Might have some fun poking at the schedule (75 % home games every year, the big ten etc) but the guy would cause me to jump on his wagon if he would run those guys right out of town. IMO he goes immediately to "legend" status if he would boot them. MD

I did'nt ask where they might go over the course of a freakin decade --Good Gosh. They play 8 of 12 at home nearly every year. just own up to it and move on. 1 tough Non conference game a year, that means 1 OOC toughie away game every 2 years. spare me nut.

They play 7 home games per year, just like darn near every good school in America!

Every so often they have an 8th home game. This year was one, they have an 8th in two years.

They play 4 games on the road in big ten play, just like everyone else.

They aren't in the business of giving charity home games to teams like Duke!

Who comes out of this whole thing looking the worst is the NCAA. It is now interpreting (I stayed away from the word making) rules on the fly. I also had to laugh at all the Dispatch Letters to the Editor yesterday decrying OSU's (and Tressel's) lack of honor at not suspending these athlete's of their own accord. It's now like an NBA game or a baseball game...you have to see how the officials are going to make their calls and then react accordingly. Major college programs have no choice but to react to how the NCAA is making decisions. And the NCAA has to protect its cash cow, the BCS bowls, by protecting them from the ravages of a non-competitive match-up. When it becomes all about the money, then decisions will be made all about the money, whether it be the NCAA, big-time conferences or individual athletics programs. If you think this stinks now, wait a few years. I see a scenario where the NCAA is usurped by a big-school organization based on self-promotion and the almighty dollar even more than now. And you and I will be part of that (we will watch the games) and there is no sense for any of us to get on any high-horse moral crusade about amateur athletics or school honors and traditions.

As for what I said about the NCAA, the WORST thing that could happen is for Congress to get involved. Look what happened at their investigation of MLB steroids! Orrin Hatch, Senator from Utah, was threatening to bring hearings on the BCS a few years ago when Utah was excluded. Guess they sucked too bad to get his ire up this year (and the fact they are headed to the PAC 12). 8)

When considering if you like the NCAA rules or not, remember, the schools make the rules the NCAA only oversees them.

The night Tress was hired, he told us that he was proud to be our football coach. Not the coach, or the Buckeyes coach, but our coach. He told us we would be proud of our team and players in the community, in the classroom, and in 310 days on the field against Michigan.

They have made me very proud on the field, and in the classroom, and the vast majority of the time in the community.

Coach Tressel, please make me proud to be a Buckeye fan by sitting those involved in this for the bowl game.

It actually will surprise me if they play, but don't expect Tress to make any announcements prior to the game.

Heard on the radio today that the buckeye fan sentiment on message boards, texts and emails to hosts, calls, ect, are about 80% in favor of keeping them out of the bowl game!

And how many Buckeye fans wanted to throw Boeckman under the bus so TP would be a big star? So what are you thinking now.
