I'm a big time morel lover/hunter. I agree w/ Ozzie though, the last few years, especially since the big ice-storm in 03, they just havent been the same in the So. Ohio area anyway. Most of the woods were too full of brush and just too thick to hunt. Last year I was pretty successful in the Ross county area, but not like a few years back. I lived in Wheeling Wv area for 7 years and that was the most success Ive ever had w. morels. Huge ones too. Hopefully this year will be better.

I love to hunt and eat morels. We had a patch that was a guaranteed find for many years behind our house (you just had to climb a mountain to get to it :122248 ) and would be able to get a large mess every couple days. But since the ice storm ,and from what we can tell, turkey's, we haven't had the same luck. I fix mine in flour and butter also. Look for a seasoned flour called Kentucky Kernel, it works well, too.
The earliest I've found morels is April 1st.

Ramps are a wild plant that have a strong onion like flavor. There's a large patch behind my house. They are a bright spot of green on the forest floor. I dug them up to show to people before and it took lots of washings to get the smell off my hands. Powerful. I've heard that if you eat them that the smell will come out through your skin for several days.
I've always thought I might try them cooked with fried potatoes.
Several places have ramp festivals in the spring.

Here's a link that tells all about them:

I used to hunt ramps a lot in wheeling. There was a big patch close to my secret morel spot. I used to go to the Ramp festival down around Buckhannon
