Very true, as South Webster must worry about Green on Tuesday night first. And, yes, I would hope Barrick has more class than that. I would much rather see the last game in that gym be close rather than a blowout. We can only hope though...

The 'Palace" will be packed come Friday night because it is the last high school basketball game in the gym. The 'Barrick Brigade' will be out in full force making all kinds of noise for their fellow classmates. It is also senior night and you know those eight young men: Matt Jenkins, Dustin Cook, Daniel Armstrong, Kyle Blevings, J.T. Conley, Drew Spradlin, Dusstin Proehl and Matt Stegman are going to be ready to play that final home game. These young men do not like to lose at anything and they havent very often all the way back to pee wee sports to junior high and now into high school. Best of luck men!
Oddly enough, Wheelersburg is not the only school to have a history of playing their home games in that gym. There was one season when another local team used that gym for their 'home' games--and were very grateful for the kindness and hospitality of their neighbors. It is appropriate that those two teams get to play the last official game together in that gym.
Coincidence or happenstance--you have to love it.

Friday night will be an emotionally charged game. Look for a packed house.
I've watched over 35 years of basketball in that gym and even though alot of visitors called it a "crackerbox", as far as home court advantage, I wouldn't have traded it for any other gym. I would bet good money that the closeness of the fans to the floor and the student section being right on the action (and at the visitors end for the 2nd half of every ballgame) has caused a more than a few free throw's to be missed late in some close games.
I know they had a thread awhile back asking what everyone thought was the best game they have ever watched in the gym, I don't know about best game, but the best finish I've ever seen in a game there was in the Burg-Portsmouth game of 2002, in Burleson's Senior year. He received the outlet pass after a missed Trojan FT, down by one and went the length of the court and dunked the ball for the game winning points. Man, what a finish.
Still have fond memories of Brad Walke draining jumper after jumper in that gym. RIP buddy.
Good luck Pirates this Friday and good luck and thanks to the Seniors. Win this game for all of the players, boys and girls, that have played in the "crackerbox" gym over the last 50 years, but most of all win it for yourself. To be able to say that you played the last game ever in that gym is something you will be able to tell your grandkids someday.
Doc, or someone. Does anyone know the Burg's winning percentage at home over the history of the gym? I know they had some lean years early on, but in the 35 years I've been watching the Burg, they've only had 4 losing season and only two of they years did they not win 10 or more games

Come to think of it, it was before I was born also.
On Friday, December 29, 1961, Wheelersburg and South Webster had a double header at Wheelersburg. Minford beat South Webster in the first game by about 20 points and Wheelersburg won the second game over Green by six. Both were SCL games.
But the main season that South Webster played home games there was 1963-64. Unfortunately, I was not researching South Webster so I don't know the whys of the situation. I also did not copy the data from the microfilm so it is not at hand but I recall them playing a lot of games on Thursdays at Wheelersburg or other days when Wheelersburg had an away game. Wheelersburg played their SOC games on Friday nights and their SCL games on some Tuesdays, open Fridays and on one Saturday.
Wheelersburg and South Webster played twice that season, a non-league game to open the season and an SCL game mid-way through the season. Both games were played at Wheelersburg (of course.) But technically it was South Webster's year to host the league game.
If anyone knows why South Webster needed to borrow a court that year, I would love to know. I was wondering if they were constructing the South Webster High School that year? I was thinking there was consolidated/restructuring in the mid-60s?
There is a farm on Lick Run Lyra that has been in my family since the 1850's. But in the 1940-1963 range, the children of the family attended Wheelersburg High School. They had the choice to go to Vernon but Burg was closer. After 1975, the restructing meant that the next generation from that farm went to South Webster High School. But my aunt Monica graduated from Wheelersburg in 1967 because the change had not taken place until after she started school in 1962.

As to their home winning percentage, I don't have that and neither does anyone else. I have logged more than 40 hours of research so far and about the same working with the accumulated data. But that is a question that I hope be able to answer some day. While I am only missing the scores from about 3 games in the last fifty years, there are MANY more holes about where the the games were played. I could probably come close to answering that question with about 50 more hours of work because whole seasons will have to be looked up on microfilm game by game to see if they were home or away. But for this year, the administration only asked for the coaches who coached in the gym and their records during each tenure. So that is what I focused on.
I believe that the longest home-game winning streak on that floor was 28 games. The Pirates lost Feb 2 1971 to South Webster at home and did not lose at home again until Feb 15, 1074 when they played Clay in the last game of the season and lost by one point, 57-58.
If anyone wants to contribute to the effort by allowing me to copy old scrapbooks, I would appreciate the help.

doc, if the 28 home game winning streak is correct, then there are two streaks. During my four years (1998-2002), our home record was 38-1, with the lone loss coming on the home opener of the 2000 season against Minford. Wheelersburg did not lose again at home until Dec. of 2002 (Start of the '03 season) in the season opener against Valley. Breakdown of the lastest streak would be:
2000: 9 games
2001: 10 games
2002: 9 games (only played 9 home games this season due to the National Hoops classic)
2000: 9 games
