How many schools have a no school, no practice policy.

What are your thoughts either way?

Westfall doesn't have the policy. Just depends. Usually we get a snow and it melts by 1pm! Not this year! I don't think the policy should be in place. If it is fine in the afternoon, practice. If not, don't!

Just to play devil's advocate, if there isn't a no school/no practice, by your logic, why would a school not let them play if the weather clears by the afternoon?

How are they different?

I think I misunderstood something...there isn't a policy in place at Westfall. I'm saying, regardless if school is cancelled, practice if the weather permits later that day/evening.

I like the policy man. At Westfall we practice when we have small amounts of snow, but as of recentlly these snowws have not melted and nost people probably can't get out of their driveways to even get to practice. If you had a game no body would be there to watch. Thats just the way it is man.

I agree with this policy if you can't go to class why should you be allowed to play sports? Do we go to school for an education or to play? We wonder sometimes why our kids act the way they do, what does that teach them what is more important. I understand Athletics is also a part of learning but only for a select few. My suggestion quit worrying about getting sued and be adminstrative (it is more than a title) and have school if the parents don't want them to go because of the weather let them make the descision. Unless we get weather like we have had the last two days.

I think practicing when school is closed is fine. If the 14 or 15 kids that play can make it into the school then why not? If only 3/4 of your kids can make it into the gym then why not, the ones that can't....hey thats ok. Being safe is the number one priority but if the kids on the team can make it in fine then why make it an issue out of it at all?

Then what happens to the policy that most coaches have, which is no practice no play? And if they break the rule for a superstar, the parents are grumbling because their little Joey made it to practice so he should finally get some playing time!

I think the welfare and safety of the kids is the most important thing here. No school, no practice. School is cancelled because of hazardous conditions. 16-18 year old boys (and girls) could be running late to practice, hit a slick patch, and you have a recipe for disaster. Let a good lawyer get his hands on that one against a school district.

One practice isnt going to make or break your season, but it could get someone seriously injured.

I am in favor of letting the kids practice if they can get to the gym. Coaching staffs and some parents have 4-Wheel Drive (sane Ice Storms) and can work to get the kids there.

I remember back in a day, that you knew if school was cancelled to just be there. So what if the car could not move. If we could get out and shovel snow for a few bucks, then we could walk to practice. I know that is tough for most of the county schools, but us city kids just got there some how.

I think the kids are a bit pampered these days, but I am old school. Get them out of the house and get the juices flowing.

Hitchbone, I don't recall being off nearly as much as what the kids are now. I was in highschool in the 70's, but grew up in a rural school. If you could get there, you did so, and if not, it was treated like a sick day, you were given the opportunity to make it up.

I agree. Most often school is cancelled very early in the morning and by afternoon, its fine out. Have practice if you think that's the case and don't hold it against kids that you know absolutely cant get there, but honestly how often does that happen? Most often, people can get out. Remember the days when most often, games were usually played even if school was cancelled, which it wasn't that often.

Yes, the quality of SE Ohio basketball has fallen greatly in the wake of this natural disaster.

coaches make me sick, they all take any fun out of sports anymore. just because they dont have a life, they dont need to make the players as miserable as they are. No School, No Sports, no questions asked!!!!!!

Hmm.....I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you most likely were not an athlete in school, at least not a really good one. If you were you would realize that all the players worth a darn HAVE FUN going to practice!! That is part of the reason they play the game to begin with. There were times (eons ago) when school would get cancelled and the players on my team would BEG the coach to come to the gym so we could at least get in to shoot a bit. And I know PLENTY a kids that do the same thing now. The coach NEVER held it against a player if they had to miss due to road conditions. Heck, sometimes the coach would offer to come pick up some of the kids just to get them there. So sorry, making a no school, no sports policy is just silly.
