Way to go pointers, much congrats from a Chesapeake boy. I have seen some 20-0 Chesapeake teams get knocked off quick, but they didn't have Mayo either.

congrats to the pointers. good luck in the playoffs. maybe the burg can meet the pointers in the playoffs. i think it would be a good game.

on a side note. that may be true but he's just one person. it takes a team to win a game in the playoffs not just one kid

I agree it does take a whole team to have success. But the last couple of games Mayo has not been the leading scorer...he is still earning very solid point totals, but he hasn't been the teams highest scorer. (on average he IS the team's highest scorer, but I just mean the last couple of games.) That shows that some of the other guys are stepping up too. Especially Weed and Taylor lately among others...which is great because they are the seniors. Mayo is a huge contributor to the team, but South Point really does play together as a team well.

South Point completes unbeaten season at 20-0

WEST UNION — First it was the New England Patriots. Now it’s the South Point Pointers.

Using a strong offensive showing in the second half, the Pointers beat the West Union Dragons 84-73 Saturday to complete a perfect 20-0 regular season.

Third-year coach Gary Norris, who won a state title in West Virginia at Huntington Vinson, had a guarded optimism the Pointers could have a good season, but he never dreamed of perfection.

“Things really have to fall into place for that to happen. You can’t get anybody hurt for any length time or get anyone sick. We won two or three close games that we could have lost,” said Norris.

The Pointers did not have any starters back with the exception of senior Beau Weed who was a part-time starter. Senior center Corey Taylor played as a backup, Chase Kratzenberg was on the junior varsity, Zach Woody played off the bench and Todd Mayo did not play last season.

On top of the inexperience, the Pointers faced a strong Ohio Valley Conference schedule. Defending champion Fairland and runner-up Rock Hill returned their team virtually in tact.

“We went to some difficult places to play and there was a lot more balance in our conference. We played some pretty good teams outside the conference, too,” said Norris.

The Pointers were tied 32-32 at the half with West Union, but Mayo scored eight points and Weed seven in the third quarter as South Point pulled away to a 54-47 lead.

“It turned it on an up-and-down game and we got a lot of scoring out of everybody the second half,” said Norris.

Taylor and Weed scored 10 points each in the fourth quarter as the Pointers outscored the Dragons 30-26 to complete the team’s first unbeaten season since 1971-72 when they were 18-0 under Mike Hughes.

“We had people who could do different things. We had couple kids who could play defense, handle the ball, pass, shoot, they all contributed and did their part,” said Norris. “The kids played hard and that’s all you can ask for.”

Weed led the Pointers with 22 points to go with six assists. Taylor had 21 points and 13 rebounds while Mayo had 19 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

South Point had 26 assists with Kyle Hughes also getting six. The Pointers had just 11 turnovers.
