Hines and Young and Buecler have made the final 4 from the SHL.
Young's team was undefeated and went down in the semis on a last shot that was indeed CLEARLY after the buzzer.
Hines took a Whiteoak squad with NO player in the rotation over 6'2 to the state semis..then lost 4 of his 5 starters and 5 of 7 of his rotation and went to the elite 8 the next season...knocking off Howie in the regionals on the way......again with little size.
SO if the state is your criteria...those 3 are there as well.

I92 my man, now there are 8. I almost listed Dave Young but wasn't REAL sure. If you are talking the BEST coaches I will stick by Regional Championships.
The list, ACTIVE coaches
1. Tom Barrick *
1. Howie Caldwell
1. Carl Wolfe
1. Larry Jordan
1. Dave Young
1. Buecler
1. Hines
1. Dan Liedtke
ALL (and I am counting on help from posters on a couple) are ACTIVE and have a Regional Championship under their belt. If you have made it to the Finals then you get a * beside your name.
Now I'm going to make some people upset. Staying at a school for a long period of time doesn't make you a GREAT coach, it makes you a survivor.
You have won enough to make the locals happy. Now, I believe these are really good coaches, but there has to be a line drawn. I drew that line at REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!
Out of Bounds, Gene Ford would have been on my FIRST list had he coached in the Southeast District.

Trying to find a golf game!!!
Didn't Barrick make the finals?
If the OHSAA had replay or the refs had eyes North Adams would've been in the State Finals in 1997...or maybe it was 1996.
I've seen the tape......they lost on a shot I'd guess 1/3-1/2 second after the buzzer. The refs scattered off the court like they were being chased by grizzly bears.
Anyways...I think you have them all.
What's ironic and sad is Jackson's Assistant Superintendent was a last second 3 pointer from making this list.

I92, I have 2 wishes, first is that the Asst Sup you refer to does HIS job and not follow the current Sup. He not only did a great job coaching his kids a "slot machine" away from this list, but he was a SOLID Principle. Second, I want to see a certain Hughes on the golf course again soon, GREAT time!!!!! I don't believe Tom made it to the finals but I could be wrong, have been MANY times before.

Yeah...I'm confusing him with Ironton a few years back.
Hope your speaking of my big slicing Dad.....I'm nearly retired. Played 36 holes this year....but shot a 74 at FV.....much to Dad's demise! lol
I can tell it kills him to stand in the doorway during games....he may not want any part of our situation...but he looks as if he misses coaching.

He didn't slice it TOO bad, you'll have to ask him about it!!!! Sure you know who I am and he'll remember. I don't think Phil wants to coach in Jackson, just hope he "follows his gut" when doing his job. Jackson will be better off if he does that rather than be a "follower".
Dukies, there are TONS of coaches that are fun to watch, we're talking GREAT coaches here!!!

Competitor,
I understand your point with the regional championships, but there are some great coaches out there that haven't had enough talent to get to that point. I believe great coaching is getting the most out of your team. That might mean taking a team that should win 8 games and instead win 12 just as easily as leading a team to a championship. I know that you probably think Dustin Ford was an outstanding high school coach. I would agree. However he didn't make it out of the districts. I still think he was just as a good of coach as some of the people on your list. There are other examples as well. Again, not trying to be argumentative, just making a point.

Coy, you can make this list out to be anything. "Top 5 Active Coaches in Southeast Ohio" was the post and I chose to go with proof. Yes, there are a lot of good coaches not on my list. To single out Dustin, he did a great job at Jackson but HE will tell you he doesn't deserve to be on my list. If you are a GREAT coach you will eventually be rewarded with a Regional Championship. Is it impossible at some schools, maybe, but just like college coaches, you move on to better jobs. You improve your opportunities. We aren't talking about getting Sainthood for being a great human being, we're talking GREAT coaches. And if winning a League title, going undefeated in the regular season, winning a Sectional title make you a great coach then in my eyes we have our sights set too low. District championship(S) help your cause, but the bottom line is REGIONAL TITLES!!! This list was a top 5, I made it 8, but to quote a good friend of mine, "you can't have 10 people in a top 5 list".

Who cares about regionals, half the the coaches on these lists done it before AAU and OYB was big,and before parents thought their kids were to good to play for certain schools and moved them to other ones. Maybe the list should of been called COACHES THAT HAVE REACHED REGIONALS! Every coach listed on here have done a good job in one way or another.

Howdy Doody was fun to watch, too, but he doesn't belong on this list.![]()
Well I said they were good coaches AND fun to watch I didn't just say they were fun to watch and if you would go back to the previous page there is others who listed some of the same coaches as I did so chill out if you can
