does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Let the coaches coach and the parents parent. All kids need good role models in their lives but a coach is by no means responsible for "raising" his players. To suggest that a person who enjoys an occasional beer or is single would not make a good coach is ridiculous. How about someone with a love of the game, experience, a work ethic, a motivator, and someone willing to put the time in? If there's a candidate out there with all that and he's a family man, a youth leader, and an organ donor, than all the better.
Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
My point is, we've got people like Dragonfan5 out there ready to "dismiss" a potential coach like Black or whoever based on nothing but personal agenda and opinion. In my opinion, that's what's gotten us in the mess in the first place - people only looking after themselves and their agenda!
Every Varsity coach starts somewhere - so Black doesn't have varsity "Head" coaching experience....he still has varsity coaching experience. Any assistant takes on many of the jobs of the head coach - scouting, practice schedules, scrimmages, communication with parents, players and community members. That's why it's important for a Head coach to surround himself with good assistants.
This is where my previous comments come into play: for Dragon to say that Black or others should be "disregarded" because there may be a conflict of interest between the game of basketball and family/friends is ridiculous! These boys need more than a coach - they need a leader and role model.

Love2play you do have a point on somethings, assistant coaches do alot of the same work that the head coach does, but what I said was that McClung already had head coaching experience, so that is why I felt that he was the best person for the job. If it only takes varsity experience to make you ready for a head coaching position then Gorby is more than ready and should be considered for the open position.
Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Love2play,I got news for ya.Alot of those "BIG NAME" coaches head out to the bar.
That has nothing to do with how you can coach.Alot of people on this thread seem to be trying to bring the pulpit into the mix here.I could care less what his politics, religon etc.etc.are as long as he can handle kids and he can coach.
I know all of the canidates and I think any of them would be good.

Really?First thing I have heard about that.Ya jsut got to love Proctorvegas and all the rumors that fly here!

Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
I was not trying to imply that anyone that drinks is not going to be a good coach. I was simply making a comparison about character - I admit, it was a poor comparison. I just get tired of people trying to say someone is good or not good based on one thing that they do or don't do. I hope those making decisions regarding our incoming coach can put bias, personal agenda etc...aside and choose the best well-rounded candidate for the position. No intention of offending anyone, just speaking my mind.

If everyone on here knew Mike Black they would agree that he would make a great HEAD COACH!!!!McClung has had varsity experience. I dont know his win loss record but his teams didn't ever stand out. I know when he coached girls at Chesapeake they were down so its hard to compare those seasons. Mike Black has coached undefeated seasons at a DIV. I 8th grade team in Dayton. I think that is definitely comparable to Varsity girls job. (IN MY OPINION) As far as the other years McClung never took his teams that far. He has been on good staffs but other than that he doesnt necessarily have any edge on the other candidates. As far as Speed, I know for a fact he had some conflicts with certain things while coaching the girls at Fairland. Buchanan, he is a good guy. I know him rather well. He is enthusiastic but lacks varsity experience. But as I stated earlier, you have to start somewhere. I still think Black should edge Buchanon. Those 2 should be considered. They need a new face unless Bellville comes back. Heck, maybe Bellville would like Black to join staff. They know each other quite well.......

Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
I would say that Coach Belville did not re-apply for this job. As long as Coach Chapman has anything to do with the girls program Coach Belville will never coach the Dragons. I find it so sad that a bad coach can run a great coach out of town, but knowing Coach Belville from my high school days he will get the last laugh. There are several great jobs open throughout the great state of Ohio and it would not surprise me the least bit to see Coach Belville on the sidelines again next season, but as a head coach and not as an assistant at Ironton. A Fairland assistant maybe on a different sideline in the county next season, just a rumor that I have heard through the grape vine. I have not spoke bad of Mike Black and will not I just think there are more quailified people applying for this position. It will also be hard for the board to justify hiring a coach out of the system to come in and coach considering there is not a science job open in the district. I will support any coach that it is hired, but with three or four teachers in the system applying, i figure this job will be filled in house at the May board meeting. If it is not filled these kids will miss a lot of camp and open gym time. Then I could see several kids jumping ship with out any summer basketball.
P.S. What does the great Fairland girls coach do during the summer with her basketball team. I know last season she scheduled shot outs but did not go to them because the girls did not want to go. So could this be another wasted summer for the girls program also. "What a joke of a program"

Talked to Coach Belville yesterday and he has no intentions of coming back. When I told him it was rumored on here that he was coming back he responded "REALLY! thats the first thing I have heard about it!"So there ya go just to settle the rumor!

Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Unless someone starts looking at the bigger picture at Fairland, it's not gonna matter who gets the job. An experienced football coach gets fired because of his record and is replaced with someone ready to retire. No one else is even interviewed despite the fact that experienced people both in and out of the district applied. A girl's basketball coach gets a free pass year after year despite her record, discipline problems, and lack of parental support. Then one of Fairland's most successful basketball coaches is forced to resign because the AD and principal won't do their respective jobs and coordinate practice times. No good coach is going to stay at Fairland unless they have some sort of connection. The board tried to dictate to Wilcoxen what kind of offense to run and they tried to dictate to Speed who to play. You guys are wasting your time arguing over who would be the best candidate. Qualifications don't matter - it's who knows who.

Outstanding post bgmonster. You have been right on ever since you started posting on here. Althought the majority of this board wasn't there when Nathan resigned the problem remains the same. In my opinion a good board is like a good sports official, most effective when you don't know that they are there. I've commented enough on the Wilcoxon issue that everyone knows where I stand but you raise a HUGE point in that Chapman issue. Her record and the constant issues with her program are ignored, while the boys programs are constantly under a microscope. The only thing I want to see are fair solid programs that are led by the most qualified people that our board can find. This whole thing sucks for me because virtually everybody involved in all this I like personally but that doesnt mean I think they are right for the job and hiring Snyder, who retires next year without even looking for another candidate was more the parents fault than the board. Take my word on this. That doesnt mean I condone it from them but there is more than meets the eye.Once again I urge EVERYBODY including myself, keep our problems just that, our problems. Keep it off here and if we disagree, show it come election time. And c'mon Earp ,don't want to speculate!!!!You're the biggest rumor monger on here.At least you have marbles to post your real name on here.

Coach Chris Ball would be an excellent choice for the job, he could be the basketball coach and then take over the football program next year when Snyder leaves. Just ask the boys playing AAU for him now.
Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Rumor monger???Clayton I really have no idea who its gonna be,Youre guess is as good as mine. And I will give you credit where credit is do as well. You also have the kahunas to use youre real name.

Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
Just a suggestion, not saying that I've heard anything, he would be a good person to have in your school system. Oh by the way, he is interested.

Re: does anyone know if the fairland coach resigned last night?
I dont know who his assistants will be this season, but I assume that he will keep a few of the guys from Belville's staff, but I have been wrong before. The community of Proctorville and eastern Lawrence County should really get hehind McClung and his staff and offer him the same support that they gave Belville.
Coach Mindy Chapman has offered to help coach the boys team, but McClung is afraid that she will turn the boys program into the powerhouse that she has turned the girls into over the past three years. So he had to decline her offer for fear of her coaching ability.
