Valley played great, but there have been a lot of similar and slightly better performances in that gym.

This team is getting it together. Their unselfishness and size will make them tough to beat down the stretch.

This team is improving every game!! I think the coaches are finally finding the right set of players to place in the game for the situations at hand.. Even the young players are taking charge and showing confidence!!! Great reflection of the changes made by the coaching staff, going from chaos (last year) to organized and control this year. The players can now find their roll and increase their confidence in each other... Great Job!!!!!

It was a tale of 2 halves last night. Valley shot lights out and played great defense to jump out to a large lead. Waverly's press really benefited Valley as they were able to get multiple layups to extend the lead. Yates has great vision and is very under control.

In the 2nd half Waverly switched their offense and let Kretzer take over with the ball in his hands. He hit a couple long balls as well as quite a few mid range pullups. They had a couple chances to make it into a game but each time Valley came back down and hit a huge shot to keep them at bay. Valley's bigs controlled the night on the boards and coming up with some big blocks. Waverly needs Ward to take some of the shots that he passed on tonight.

In the end Valley was the better team but I don't think there is much question who the better player was. Jake was amazing in the 2nd half. Can't wait for Rd2 in Waverly.

Kretzer was the best player on the floor last night. But, Valley had the better team.

Good luck to both teams. It should be a better game for the Tigers at home.

Agree that Kretzer is probably the best scorer in the SOC2 but he can't do it all. Yates scores when he needs to and finds people when they are open, thus the outcome last night. Both are good teams and still have another game to play in Waverly that will decide the top dog in SOC2.

Before the season started, I had Valley and Waverly battling for the SOC II crown, and last night the Indians took a big step toward the title, although there is a return match at WHS later on. After a slow start this season, the Indians are playing very good basketball now.

bluedude,
Kretzer can do it all, the difference was Valley's others hit huge shots and the Tigers couldn't throw it the ocean. Kretzer finds people when they are open, leads the team in rebounds and probably blocked shots. The outcome last night did not say Yates is the all around better player, it said Valley was the better team last night.

I think the "can't do it all" comment on Kretzer was taken wrong. He is one of the top players in the SOC and can control what he contributes to the game but he can't get all the rebounds, make all the shots for his teammates, and get all the assists. That's why there are four others on the floor. I saw Jake play his first high school game and have seen him play four times this year. No question about the talent and I didn't mean for it to sound that way. It's evident that Akron sees the potential also as he will soon be playing for the Zips. Good luck to him the rest of the season and like I said, they still have a rematch in Waverly.

I was really impressed with Valley's perimeter defense. Many times our players felt they had enough room to get a shot off, only to see a Valley defender close and get a piece of it with their long arms. Keller did an excellent job on Kretzer in the first half, but we made it easier on him with Jake getting the ball 20 feet from the basket on most occasions. That's how you let 6'2 play with 6'7. As the game went on, Kretzer started taking the ball into the paint, and he was obviously very effective. I haven't seen Waverly that "out-of sorts" like we were in the first half since last year when we played Logan Elm. We can say we played badly and shot poorly, but you have to give the Indians the credit for that. We came into their house, and they were very prepared to defend it. I'm looking forward to the rematch at the end of the year!

Some stats of interest, per the Daily Times:

Yates had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks
Kretzer had 26 points on 11-16 shooting from the field and 2-3 from the FT line
The rest of Waverly's team shot a combined 6-41 from the field
Valley hit 7 threes as a team with Waverly knocking down 5 triples as a team
As mentioned earlier by Crab's Bro, no other Waverly player had more than 5 points with 6 Tigers scoring
Valley placed 7 players in the scoring column, with 6 different players contributing 5-9 points following Yates 18

Scoring by quarters:
Team............1st....2nd....3rd....4th....Total
Waverly.........3.......9.......22.....8.......42
Valley...........14.....18......10.....17......59
