This is the second Wheelersburg High School at the Football stadium location.

BTW--note the vehicles at the bottom of the hill. I think most of those are 'school buses'. My grandfather drove one of those horse drawn ones for several years. From the pictures of his 'bus' it would have been in the 1930s. I think he picked up kids for the Lyra grade school but I would have to ask to be sure.

Isn't the 1st building still standing and is apartments now???..... I can't imagine they constructed that dilapidated looking building that is there on South Street for the apartments. I was away at school and working when the old (2nd & 3rd ) buildings were disposed of.

You are more than welcome to look at the scrapbook at any time. I also have original pictures of Pirate basketball teams (both men and women) taken on the steps at the entrance to the high school on the hill.... early 30's I think, and football teams during the same time frame.
I'm not sure about copying the scrapbook though as it is pretty dilapidated and fragile....(as am I )

Another tidbit of CURRENT information regarding Wheelersburg high that some of us are MOST proud of and some are not even familiar with......
------------------------------------

Posted: October 10, 2007
LRC’s (Local Report Cards) are the tool used by the state to determine the performance level and effectiveness of its school districts. Wheelersburg School District achieved more indicators than any district in eighteen counties in southeastern and eastern Ohio.

• High School received an “Excellent” rating for the 5th consecutive year.

-------------------------------------

I am personally proud to say that Wheelersburg is MORE than a perennially high athletic achieving school.

(Madd Dogg contributes significantly to that academic standind)..... one way or another..... LOL J/K MD.

Doc and BOO, I have a question. Is the first school that you show there that faced South Street now the apartment building that is on South Street or is that part of the second school that was there?

I lived in those apartments back in the mid 80's and was told it was part of the old school.

I think that the apartment building was part of the elementary school complex that was there. But BOO should remember better than I. I was four years old when they tore most of that old stuff down leaving just the board office, bus depot and the apartment building.

My understanding is that there is nothing left of the original high school. But I will ask my mother since she has been in all four high schools buildings at one point or another. But the last time I asked, she just mentioned the oldest building as being attached at the back of the third school, that the oldest building had been torn down and that it had halls on the second floor only as wide as a cow.

The third high school building had the cream colored brick and the first floor was half underground which fits the description of the apartments better. The fact that the second floor was only 1 1/2 stories high made it safer to drop the (unwilling) principal out of the second floor window. And there were some students below who caught him.

But it was WWII and those boys were a little more rowdy then. Many of them expected to go to war as soon as they graduated. Several did not wait for graduation and some of their school mates had already died in the effort. For them, the future was now and I believe that they were a little more spontaneous because of it. They also skipped school a lot more...

The apartments are the old original high school, which was converted to an elementary school when the 'new' high school was built up on the stadium hill.
I went to the 1st and 2nd grade in the original high school (that was converted to an elem. school) and I went to the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades in the second high school up on the hill.... then went to and graduated from the cream colored high school (the 3rd high school) that was behind where Koch's Hardware and the Baptist church is now.
The 1st high school (after conversion) was connected to the 3rd high school by the 3rd high school's gymnasium.
Confused??

I had time to ask and according to my mother, the apartments are NOT the original high school. They were part of what she refers to as the 'add-on' which was the elementary school. The first high school was connected to the third high school and then there was added on more building behind that with the original high school in between. Eventually the original high school was completely torn down. But what does she know. But I do believe that she is a little older than you BOO so maybe her memory is not what it used to be. ;-) But she seems VERY sure of her information. But I will ask people I know from that era (Pug and Betty Miller and John Sherman) the next time I see them or ask some of my older aunts and uncles. They tend to remember those things pretty well too.

I thought the apartment building had a flat roof, like the 'add-on' rather than a peaked roof like the original building. ^^ Also the basic design of the windows does not look like the apartment building to me.

I too attended classes in that old elementary building but only for 1 year and I was only 3 at the time (head start) so my memory of the details are mostly just of the parts that I actually was in.

I do have very clear memories of Gary Heimbach doing student teaching with my Head Start class that year. A couple of years later when he got a job at the new elementary school, he drove one of my older sisters crazy by calling her by my name. She was only in sixth grade but she put her foot down. She said she would answer to her older sisters' names and she would even answer to her older brothers' names but it just wasn't right to be expected to answer to a younger sibling's name.

BOO--When would be a good time to copy that scrapbook. Then maybe I can answer football trivia questions! I have only researched 1935 so far for that sport and it does not answer your question. I am free tonight and I have my own copier... I have basketball games on Thursday and Friday to attend but Saturday and Sunday afternoon are possibilities. :) You can e-mail me directly at drrabb@zoomnet.net. I am happy to pick up and bring back if one of those times is convient for you. If it is getting fragile, it is all the more critical to get a second copy made so if something (God forbid-fire, flood or tornadoes) should happen to the original, the information won't be entirely lost.

Maybe I should rephrase what I said for clarity. The apts are PART of the old building that was added on to but it was still used as a school. My niece went to kindergarten in what was the "add on" to the front of the old building (now the apts). She went there in about 1959 I think.

BOO, I have two guesses.

Either Ed Miller or Pug Miller.

The old elementary building was still being used as a school as late as 1968 (when I attended) which was the year the tornado went through town. The 'new' grade school was in the process of being built but only really had a foundation. That was a good thing because the main funnel went directly over the spot killing one person across the street from the school site before spinning into the Pyles addition, wrecking terrible havoc there.

Neither of those boys even played on that field.
Try again.
