Host Gallipolis, before more than 1,000 fans, picked off its second hardwood victory of the year against no setbacks by turning back cross-county rival River Valley 46-35 in the new gym at Centenary Tuesday evening
It was Coach Jim Osborne’s 526th career coaching victory in 41 years at Gallia Academy. River Valley dropped to 0-2 on the year.
Gallipolis took an 8-4 lead after one period of action, and was on top 19-13 after two quarters. GAHS led 32-24 going into the final stanza.
Cody McAvena paced RVHS with 12 points. Cody Smith added eight, Aaron Harrison six, and Dominique Peck five, Trey Noble and Parker Hollingsworth each finished with two points.
Big John Troester, who recorded his first career double double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, led GAHS. Nick Mitchell finished with 13 markers while Ethan Moore popped in eight points. Chuck Calvart added six points, Corey Eberfeld three, and Jordan Cornwell two.
River Valley sank 14 of 44 field goal attempts for 31.8 percent. The Raiders were six of 27 behind the arc for 22.2 percent and eight of 17 from two point range for 47 percent .
At the foul line, the Raiders sank one of two free throws for 50 percent. River Valley had 12 personal fouls, losing Peck in the second half. RVHS had 25 rebounds and 14 turnovers. Noble picked off six rebounds while Smith grabbed five.
Gallipolis connected on 17 of 41 field goal attempts for 41.5 percent. Behind the arc, GAHS was three of 21 for seven percent. GAHS was 14 of 20 from two point range, including nine for 10 in the second half for 70 percent.
At the foul line, GAHS canned nine of 14 for 64.2 percent. The Blue Devils had 11 personal fouls and 30 rebounds, 14 by Troester and five by Mitchell and four by Golden. GAHS committed 10 turnovers.
GAHS had 10 assists, two each by Eberhard, Cornwell, and Troester. The Blue Devils had seven steals, four by Golden. GAHS took two charges, one each by Moore and Troester. GAHS finished with 11 defections.
Gallipolis will travel to Athens Saturday for a triple-header with the Bulldogs with the freshman game starting at 5 p.m.
In the first game Tuesday, the Gallipolis freshmen defeated River Valley, 35-21. It was the season opener for River Valley. GAHS improved to 1-1

For the Little Raiders, Jacob Gilmore and Ethan Dovenburger each had four points. Joe Lloyd and Austin Lewis each finished with three points.
For Gallipolis, Jim Clagg led the way with 10 points. Cody Call added eight, Justin Bailey six, Jeremy Wilson five, Nick Clagg four and T. J. McCalla two points.
The GAHS frosh will play a non-league game at Pt. Pleasant on Thursday.
In the preliminary contest, Gallipolis defeated the Raiders, 50-19.
The Blue Imps led 19-3, 27-9, and 37-11 at the quartermarks.
Austin Lewis, former Gallipolis player, led the Raiders with seven points. Jacob Gilmore added five.
For Gallipolis, Joel Johnston pumped in 10 points, Tyler Eastman eight, Cody Billings eight, Ben Robinson seven, Drew Young six, Casey Lawrence and Joe Jenkins four each, Caleb Craft two and Tim Warren one point.
The win left GAHS 2-0. River Valley dropped to 0-2.

Yes. Crowd was scattered out on GAHS side. Visitors side was almost full. Could not have gotten the crowd in the 4th and State gym.
