Gallia Academy High School alumni, former coaches and friends for ex Blue Devil basketball, baseball, track and tennis coach Jim Osborne are planning a recognition banquet over the Labor Day weekend.
According to Dr. Jeff Cameron, Dover, Ohio, a 1978-79 and 1979-80 outstanding center for GAHS, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the University of Rio Grande.
The following day, Sunday, Sept. 5, a golf outing is planned at Cliffside Golf Course in Gallipolis. Dr. Cameron came up with the idea after learning the Gallipolis Board of Education had not renewed Coach Osborne’s contract for the 2010-11 school year.
More than 700 student athletes have played basketball, baseball, tennis and track for Coach Osborne during the past 41 years.
Down through the years, six varsity basketball assistant coaches for Osborne have been Kenny Turner, Gene Oesch, Ed Pauley, Dick Parsons, Bill Leedy, and Roger Brandeberry.
Some reserve cage coaches have been Ed Pauley, Willard (Buddy) Moore, Norm Persin, Rick VanMatre, Jack Payton, Josh Donley, Gary Harrison and Tom Moore.
Some of the freshmen hardwood coaches have been Cliff Wilson, Willard (Buddy) Moore, Gene Oesch, Norm Persin, Bill Leedy, Jack Payton, Gordon Baker, Brett Bostic, Travis McKinniss, Joe Justice, Tyler Swackhammer, and Greg Atkins.
Several eighth grade mentors have been Dean Mason, Bill Leedy, Mike Simmons, Jack Payton, Gordon Baker and Jim Niday.
Seventh grade coaches have been John Milhoan, Dan (Moose) Maurer, Dean Mason, Chuck Bradbury, Dennis Fravel, Chris Ellcessor, Gary Harrison and Tom Hopkins.
According to Dr. Cameron, Coach Osborne has signed off on the event and he is excited about seeing former players, assistant coaches, opposing coaches and friends.
Bryan Walters, Gallipolis Daily Tribune sports editor has agreed to run a press release on the event sometime in July.
Cameron said the next order of business is tracking down addresses or e-mail addresses of Osborne's former players and coaches. Suggestions include SEO Preps website, Facebook and word of mouth.
Cameron is also seeking other ideas on how to track down 41 years of players and coaches.
In a memo sent to Roger Brandeberry, Greg Atkins, Jeff Lanham, Gil Price, Kent Price, Dr. Gerald Vallee and son Mike, Jimmy Noe, Hobart Wilson, Jr., and Bryan Walters, Cameron introduced a work list for the event:
Address collection.
Will need to centralize a RSVP system to avoid redundancies, etc.
Will need to select a menu.
Will need to organize a program (power point).
Will need to select a few brief speakers for the evening’s program.
Creation and dissemination of invitations.
Welcome any other ideas.
