History of Athens Bulldog Basketball

Post by hardwoodheroes »

Hardwood Heroes is extremely delighted to bring you the first of a five-part series detailing the histories of the boys and girls basketball programs at each of the Athens County schools. We'll air one video per week on our television show (Sundays at 6:30pm on WOUB2), but you can view them online the day after. The first video, linked below, highlights some of the rich history at Athens High School.

Nice video...Coach McAfee was without a doubt a class act on and off the floor..I remember him well when I was a player playing against his teams and later as a coach and having the opportunity to talk to him..He was one that you respected as a coach even though you were an opponent of his...

Very nice piece on the Bulldogs. Coach McAfee is a living legend and it's an honor to know him.

On a side note- Gibby hasn't aged a bit. Looks just like he did in '64.

G W, Get to the eye doctor as quick as possible. I believe your eyesight is failing!! If I looked this bad in 64 I doubt if Coach McAfee would have even put me in a game. It was an honor to play for him and Athens High School. To get to come back to my alma mater an coach was a dream come true. I thought Nick Hurst and his fellow students did a very nice job putting this together. They probably have enough info to do a multi-part history. They were very thorough and did a nice job of trying to get their info from many sources.

The 64' Athens team had 4 starters that went on to play D 1 college basketball - Larry Coon, OU, Ron Handley, OU, Eric Gustavson, Harvard, Scott Fitzgerald, South Florida. Off the bench were 3 sophomores who would later be D 1 standout athletes - 2 in football - Dick Adams and Todd Snyder, (OU / Atlanta Falcons) and Mike Wren, (Miami OH - Hall of Fame Point Guard).

The starters on the 64 team were Scott Fitzgerald, Larry Coon, Eric Gustavson, Jim Rohr, and Fred Gibson. Dick Duncan and Phil Rose were the first two off the bench. As good as Mike Wren, Dick Adams and Todd Snyder became the next year, they did not play Varsity basketball in 1964. Were were very deep and overpowered most teams we played. The roster of that team can be seen at AHS in the gym lobby. Losing to Portsmouth in the District tournament still hurts me! They were the only team to score over 60 points on us all year and we had an off night on offense. Probably Larry Hisle and Al Oliver had something to do with that. That 64 team is still the only undefeated regular season team in Athens High School history.
