North Adams 72 Rock Hill 59 ... D6 Semi - final ...

North Adams 72
Rock Hill 59 final

... on paper this one looked like a miss match, in the end it probably was BUT kudos to Coach Schug and the Rock Hill Redmen as the first half of action was worth the price of admission - outstanding play by the underclassmen laden Redmen ... as the game unfolded in the opening quarter first 3 minutes it LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE it would look on paper in the pregame - NA with too many weapons, NA with too much speed, NA with perimeter shooters - in the 1st quarter the Green Devils of Coach McCormick turned RH over 5 times - ALL 5 miscues went to the house for transition buckets : Carson Osborne 2, Breestin Schweickart 1, Konnor Rogers 1, Jayce Rothwell 1 - all seniors , all quick, all can finish at the rim- and did ... all of the North Adams points in the quarter were IN the paint, AT the rim with the 5 transition finishes and a drive baseline by Schweickart for 2, Jayce Rothwell added a bucket down on the blocks ... great start for the Green Devils as they attacked the youngsters of Rock Hill, making them "chasers", putting them in the hole ... at 5:23 NA up 6-2 and running down hill toward the rim ...6-5 sr. Izaak Cox got the Redmen on the board with a turnaround on the block for 2pts ... the time out by Coach Schug was perfect - had to remind the youngsters that in order to be IN the game they had to play THIER game, run the offense, take care of the ball, be patient - the Redmen outscored NA 9-8 to close out the quarter ... Cox with his second shot on the blocks 2pts/4 in the qtr... 5-9 soph Rylan Barker 2pts on a drive & finish at the rim ... Barker with a drive - fouled - miss/miss ... Barker followed up the FT misses with a deep trey 3pts/5 in the qtr ... the Redmen scoring ended with 5-10 soph. Kelan Davidson getting an offensive board and stickback 2pts ... the Redmen had weathered the storm, taken the initial blows by NA ... made it a game ... North Adams 14 Rock Hill 11 after 1 ...North Adams starts all seniors ... the Green Devils literally and figuratively "run with the senior pack" of players ... while Rock Hill leans on 6-5 sr. Izaak Cox as their "size" along with 6-3 Drew Schug ... it was Cox in the 2nd that got RH rolling as the senior grabbed an offensive board & put it back for 2pts ... a dime from the outside into the big man on the block for 2pts ... offense found ... as quick as NA is size in the paint is not an attribute ... Cox & the Redmen took advantage to stay in the game ... Barker continued his stellar performance as the 5-9 soph drained back to back three pointers 6pts in the period ... at one point in the 2nd period the Redmen had forged a 28-21 lead ... but (and there is always a but) RH is a team of youngin's, 4 sophs see the floor in the starting lineup ... hard to keep youngsters patient with the ball and control the tempo, to keep doing what got you the lead ... 3 turnovers for the youngsters in the period , turnovers that will vs NA equal points going the other way ...following fr. Carson Davis's bucket in the paint, Connor Young for NA showed the quickness of the entire NA starting group - taking his defender to the rim 2pts, a putback bucket 2pts, a strip, steal & score in transition 2pts , Young finished his onslaught with a drive for 2 & 1 ... 9 pts in the period ... not to be outdone sr. Breestin Schweickart put up 6 pts with a pair of blow-by drives to the rim for 2 pts each and 2pts in transition 6pts in the frame for the senior ... Rock Hill stayed in the game - getting the lead with patience, ran the offense, took the lead, gave the lead up , finished the quarter with momentum as 6-0 sophomore Kelan Davidson drained the Redmen's 3rd triple of the quarter sending both teams into the locker room all tied up ... Rock Hill 31 North Adams 31 after 2 quarters ... Coach McCormick is realistic, he knows the strengths of his team, his seniors - his goal in every game is to maximize those strengths - use your speed, make it an uptempo game - in this one NA pushed the ball after RH misses, pushed the ball after RH makes - beat the opposition downcourt, take advantage of NA speed, ability to get to the rim, get going downhill before the opposition has a chance to set up defensively ... what we hadn't seen was an outside threat by NA ... only 3 three pointers attempted by the Green Devils 0/3 ... the first 3 minutes out the locker room are key in any game, setting the tone , showing if the adjustments made were on the money ... NA came out of the halftime break with a 7-0 run ... Connor Young with a trey 3pts, a Konnor Rogers putback 2pts, Jayce Rothwell with a steal and finish 2pts Carson Osborne with trey #2 for NA 3pts , Schweickart with transition bucket ... North Adams got 5 fgs to open the 3rd from 5 different players - the locker room speech had sunk in ... this one was over ... as NA put up a 26 spot in the quarter while Rock Hill went for 9 pts ... Rothwell with 6pts in the quarter/Young with 7/ Osborne 3 treys for 9pts/ Schweickart & Rogers each 2pts ... when the Green Devils got the lead they spread the floor, put the on ball defender for RH on an island - North Adams won this one with the one on one execution ... defend the drive they shot the 3 ball, defend the outside shot they drove and finished at the rim ... for Rock Hill, once the lead was lost , NA controlled the tempo, no half court game as NA dictated the up and down play ... RH never quit, great learning experience for the youngsters as RH got 4 pts in the qtr from Stephen Ison including a trey (5pts), Cox with putback 2pts, and Kelan Davidson drive and finish 2pts ... North Adams 57 Rock Hill 40 after 3 ... the 4th and final period was the Breestin Schweickart show as the senior showed out with back to back putback buckets 4pts, a pair of transition buckets at the rim 4pts, a drive an finish 2pt to go with the icing on the cake a deep 3 for a 13 point quarter on his own ball ... Rock Hill didn't back down, as Ison did his own best effort to keep pace as the soph put up 9pts including a deep 3 pointer ... sr. Izaak Cox added 4pt in the paint to get his total to 16pts ... soph Davidson with 4pts and jr. Mayson Black finished off the Rock Hill scoring with a transition bucket 2pts ... North Adams 72 Rock Hill 59 a final ...

Coach Schug was a great pick up! I’m glad to see him come back home! The next couple of years should be good!
