Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
Sure it might be called the Portsmouth Times, but you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you. I would venture to guess that the majority of the subscribers are from outside of Portsmouth.
Like was said above, it used to be a big deal when a local team made it to the final four, now it is nothing. They used to do stories about some of the players and that players role on the team. Used to talk about the team they were playing, letting you know what to expect going in to the game. I wonder if sites like this and the Huddle cause them to not write as much because they figure they will get the info on here.
Just wish they could do a better job on covering all the local teams. If Shawnee had been in their tourney you can bet that they would have had front page and I have to ask why? There are hardly any local kids on the Shawnee teams so why all the press. Do they think it is going to get more people in the seats? I doubt it, at least not until there are some locals playing.

Nothing in the PDT on Tuesday about the game either. I did call and speak to one of the sportswriters, Mr. Bevens. I told him that I was not aggrivated with him but I sure was with Josh and Mr. Kuhn because nothing had been in the paper.

Did you see the small press they gave the local SOC track runners who made it to STATE?
SAD!
If this was Portsmouth it would be a special edition section.
I dont agrre with that,,,I follow all of Portsmouths sports, and there are plenty of times they dont put anything at all in the paper.
I do aggree though, making it to state is a BIG deal, there should have been a front page on it.
you can bet if it was basketball or football there would be a front page...no matter who it was from the area.
you got that right. lets look back at the past 2 years when burg and webster was makin them runs deep in the playoffs. there was excellant coverage. this is burgs first final 4 in baseball since the title season of 96.
BTW i agree with a earlier post. if it was portsmouth in the final 4 in baseball there was be "HUGE" articles all week
leave it to you, to find a way to put blame on Portsmouth City Schools.....

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
Maybe it is time for a progressive, organized, influential community like Burg to get their own newspaper. Portsmouth isnt so far ahead in population and wealth that they can compete with a Wburg newspaper. All it takes is an enterpreneaur!!
So let it be written, so let it be done!

Again... Wheelersburg has their own local newspaper. The Scioto Voice is a weekly newspaper covering all of scioto county. They do an outstanding job covering news and sports throughout the county and drrabbit supplies alot of the sports photos for the paper.
I too remember the days when the PDT had great sports writeups and also posted the season stats leaders. I understand the sports dept has under went a recent change, but this is not something new. This seasons baseball all conference team (maybe even football and basketball) write up was so small you could barely read it. Of course my eyesight may be the problem.

Come on PDT, the sports section of the paper is so thin you can see through it. If it is that thin surely you could do a few stories on the local sports teams. How about a story on the Leslie kid from NW track one day, then a story about the Burg 4x100 track squad, etc.
I did think the Picklesimer (sp?) kid did a nice writeup on the athens game. Just needed to add more of the game highlights to the writeup but all in all a good piece.
I'm done with this newspaper!

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
There should be somthing in the paper everyday this week leading up to the game.interviews with the players and coaches .heck why not interview some of the proud parents.

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
They has a nice piece on the front page today about Chase Scott signing with a college.

It would never be the right parent if they did do this. Someone would complain about it.

It is a raw deal that football and basketball get a lot of attention and hardly anything is done for spring sports.
Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
Not that I have much to do with it (didn't write it, didn't take the pictures) but:

One error in the by-lines. The second celebration picture actually went with the game with Indian Valley. Someone didn't make that clear to the editor...
(OK, that part was me.)

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
This might be causing alarm, and I don't like to crack on colleagues, and I know Bret Bevens at the PDT very well. I have also gotten to know Josh Hickle over the past few years.
But earlier, I checked the OHSAA website for those media outlets whose credential requests for the state baseball tournament and track meet have been received and approved for pickup by the OHSAA.
According to the ohsaa website, the Portsmouth Daily Times was not listed among those outlets whose credential requests were received for the state baseball tournament or the state track meet.
Thus, if the OHSAA doesn't receive credential requests, then they can't approve them.
And, I'm willing to bet that as a member of the media, you can't just show up there at a state tournament and be let in without having OHSAA approved credentials.
Whenever I've covered a state event, I've always had to fill out that particular tournament's application form, fax it to the OHSAA office and then check the website for both receipt and approval of the request. That is the exact procedure.
In short, what I'm trying to say is that the PDT is not on the received and approved credential request list for either the state baseball tournament or state track meet.
That's not a good sign for the PDT.
The Scioto Voice, on the other hand, is for both.
That's all I have to offer for this subject, other than to say that when you have a team in the state tournament, you should be doing a story or stories every day on them leading up to the actual tournament.

Nothing in the PDT once again on Wed. The players leave today for Columbus and have yet to see anything about Fridays semi-final.
Thanks doc for the nice article, at least the Scioto Voice does a nice job!

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
Don't thank me, thank Mark and Debbie Allard. Mark writes the baseball articles and as sports editor he decides what and how much space to give to each subject.
The only thing I do is try and inudate him with so many pictures, he has to publish some.
But no one holds a gun to his head to do so. When Debbie bought the paper, community topics about all of Scioto County was to be her focus. And she, and now her husband, has shown the willingness to back that up with ink for the kids.
I bugged Mark starting early last week to make sure I was on the list for Baseball, Softball and Track this week at the state. And I have repeatedly called and stopped by to follow up.
(Poor guy) He had assured me the paperwork was submitted and I am glad to hear that we are on the list once again--I meant to check that yesterday.
See ya all tomorrow!
(I am confident that PDT will be there too. Josh, being new to the job, probably forgot until late to send in those papers. The state is pretty good at slipping media in at the last minute if needed. OHSAA does tend to treat the media decently.)

Re: What is up with the Portsmouth Daily Times
a positive article in the daily times about burg sports. must have been a slow sports day in portsmouth. at least the scioto voice is good about all county sports teams. a local paper can differentiate itself by handling local sports. most of the national stuff can be read about in the first two pages of usa today.
