Parents pay to play questions.
Re: Parents pay to play questions.
When schools have to cancel seasons and lose revenue......you'll see a change in the rules.

People have tried to challenge title 9 in the past. It will not be rewritten no matter how flawed it is.

Re: Parents pay to play questions.
Using the $300 figure. I would have to ask, How much money do you spend in GAS to get them to the "free" school?
I personally HATE "play to participate" (no guarantee of play) especially at $3 a pop for spring sports and $5 a pop for winter sports. I think that the students should at least be admitted for free (via some sort of ID card.) Especially at the non-football sports.
I don't care either how much those parents in Columbus have to pay!!

Pay to play is ridiculous... public school funding is a joke. Communities need to step up and trust their superintendents when they put ballots on the levies. Schools continue to skim off the bottom and rarely upgrade anything it seems to me. We continue to cut teachers, programs, etc. Coaches barely make any money after you figure in the amount of unpaid time and gas money etc. The purpose of a community having "free" public education is that throughout your lifetime you will always be paying taxes for young people to continue to grow and develop and extracurriculars are a huge part of that process. All schools should have $0 pay to play and coaches should be paid more for their time. Parents are already paying for equipment, camps, extra food, team meals, tickets to get into games, gas to pick up students from practices, gas to get to games, etc etc. Don't know if I answered any questions, but this is the state we live in... we all have cars, tv's, stuff in general, but we want to skim off the top for our childrens' education and then complain when the schools "aren't good enough" or struggle. It's no wonder a lot of good people stay away from the education field in general!
Re: Parents pay to play questions.
If your child is in 9th grade or above and you leave school A to open enroll at school B, they will have to sit out of all athletic events for 1 year from the date of enrollment at school B, per the OHSAA.
The OHSAA closed this loop-hole a couple of years ago shortly after open enrollment became an option and parents where picking and choosing where to send their kids to school solely based on athletics during grades 9-12.
There are only 2 ways that I know of that you can get around this...
1. of course, is to move your residence into school B's district instead of open enrolling.
OR
2. Open enroll your child into the school B prior to the start of their 9th grade year, i.e. at the end of their 8th grade year.
There is a popular opinion out there that if school A starts pay to play, all the students at school A get a pass that first year to open enroll to school B that does not have pay to play and the mandatory wait time of 1 year is waived, this is false.

Makes the $130 rise in property taxes from levy/bond issue seem like nothing after a few pay to plays. May be a way to get more people out there pushing the campaign for the "YES" vote.

I dont believe in pay for play. Surely your school has enough funding for each sport after fundraising. What about the kids whos parents cant afford to pAY? The child is left off the team because of financial reasons just doesnt seem fair. To some kids this is their only way of keeping out of trouble and giving them something to do that they are good at and they can take some pride in. Its a shame that sometimes it comes down to money. Any child that wants to play should be able to try out for the team and not have to worry about not having money for their shoes or cleats.Im sure in all schools there are others willing to pitch in and pay for someones equipment if there is a financial burden.

Is it fair that some sports (football / basketball) bring in enough money to fund their programs and that money is then used for the other sports that can't fund themselves?
Just wondering what your thoughts are on this.

I really don't see a problem with it ---but if that sport that is getting the help doesn't go anywhere --maybe they should drop it.

Flawed?? I have three girls that are very good in athletics and the oldest has went on to play in college. I doubt she would have ever gotten a chance if the good ole boys like yourself were still writing the rules. What is wrong with equal funding. How about the community get out and support the girls like they do the boys then they wouldn't have some funding issues.

I think its ridiculous and its a result of people sticking their nose where it doesnt belong and ruining things for others.

It is one school--if the football progam doesn't fund the others--they would have a lot of extra money and wonder who would put their hands in the piggy bank. So to keep the money into sports let them fund others.

Re: Parents pay to play questions.
My feeling is it is worthwhile supporting other sports, not just girls sports, who don't pay the bills. But we're talking about pay-to-play. If we accept the argument that football pays the bills for the other sports, wouldn't it make sense to use the proceeds from football to negate the pay-for-play for THAT sport? You want to encourage athletes to play the revenue sports so that the level of competition is high enough to draw the gates that in turn fund the other sports. It is a win-win for everyone.
