Great game at The Hat tonight. Refs swallowed their whistles all night letting these teams really get after it.
This is the first I have seen VC play since upsetting Unioto at the convo last year. WOW...VC is as advertised. The guard play is some of the best I have seen at the HS level and that shouldn't be surprising with Combs at the helm. Towards the end of the game Combs was screaming his butt off and his team was responding like a synchronized swimming team. Very very very well coached.
My Cavs played well probably the best i have seen them play this year. I knew they wouldn't lay down as they have and will see better teams. I was very disappointed with coach Huffer at the end of the game. I am a Huffer fan dont get me wrong, but with 5 minutes to go and you're down 10 with only 2 team fouls YOU GET AFTER THE BALL! Jordan Johnson needs to look to score more. The kid can flat out shoot and he is pass first. there are other kids on the floor that shoot more than he does and should look to pass! Jordan if you're readin this i am the one who is always yelling "Look to shoot 30!" lol.

GO CAVS!

VC only won by 4 but were up by 10 the entire 2nd half. The game was really never in doubt. What kills chilly is they have no bench. They are a good defensive team but their kids were exhausted.

Great game to watch at Chilli tonight. Great defense on both sides. Difference in the game was VC had three in double figures and Chillicothe had one, maybe 2 on the last second three. Saw PFloyd sitting across from me taking his napkin stats. Waiting on his post of the game. Good tournament type game for the Vikings!!

I have seen Chillicothe on film several times and last night was the best game I saw them play, of course, that could because it was live. However, they did a great job guarding the perimeter, not allowing the Vikings to get comfortable. But that is a double-edged sword, you close out on the perimeter hard, you may have a Viking guard whizzing by you and that is what happened. Several Vikings were able to get to the rim, if not, a dish to a big fella.

As a Viking fan, you can't help but be giddy like a school girl, when the Vikings hit only one three and still put up 62 points against a very talented and physical team like Chillicothe.

As far as Chillicothe, their future is very bright! Branden Maughmer is only a junior and he has what I can only assume is a younger brother, a freshman, who can flat out score. Another freshman, big fella with a some range, sorry I don't remember their names. And little Tre Beard, which I believe is Pat Beard's son. That youngster, who looks like he would fit in his father's pocket, can play; shoots it, handles it, and ain't scared of nothing. Their careers will be an interesting follow for the next three years.

Hawkeye, yes Tre Beard is my son. We are praying that God has a plan for him to hit a growth spurt soon. The other two freshhman players u mention: younger Maughmer is Jayvon- long and athletic and the big fella is Jarrod Knisley- who continues to work and get better

Sorry about the delay on any rundown or "imo's" on the Chillicothe vs Vinton County matchup Tuesday night - it was late when I made it back to Logan Tuesday night - I have a day job that actually pays the bills LOL ... last night - that darn day job & responsibilities took priority ... maybe if Mattash kicked in some $$$$$$ I could QUIT the day job gig and do SEOPs Hoops FT !!! - not happening soooo the day job will keep getting in the way "at times" during the week ...

Vinton County 62
Chillicothe 58 a final

By NOW, EVERYBODY has read the game recaps online , in the paper - I won't rehash the quarter by quarter "stuff" ... BUT it WAS a great matchup ! a game that both teams NEEDED to play imo ... Chillicothe HAS improved a lot ! in my pregame post I mentioned I had seen them in game #1 , then a couple weeks later vs Miami Trace and now a week after the MT game vs Vinton County ... improvement IS noticeable to me - going into the season Brandon Maughmer WAS going to be THE MAN - he is that and more ... the #2 option offensively WAS going to be Seth Barnes - in the first 2 games he scored but appeared to not get as many touches as he SHOULD HAVE been getting - vs VC he got the touches and he delivered BIG with the 19 points including 3 triples from the left corner ... CHS NOW has 2 SOLID scorers that CAN BE/SHOULD BE counted on every game which means opposing teams MUST defend BOTH scoring options ... another improved area was the scoring of Hunter Coffland (9 pts) with a triple - I hadn't seen him able to step out on the floor and score in the prior 2 games - he has a good midrange shot - he didn't look like he wanted or should be taking the shots BUT imo he SHOULD be taking those 12-15 footers ,when he hits those - as HE CAN - he pulls the opposition BIG out of the paint , when he does THAT it opens up the paint for Maughmer/Barnes /JOHNSON/RODERICK - all 4 of those kids have the ability to get to the rim ... as it stands now Coach Huffer has 2 scoring options in Barnes/Maughmer - they get the majority of the "shots on goal" as it should be BUT imo for the Cavs to compete vs not only SEOhio teams but Central District folks they NEED a 3rd scoring option - another outside threat, someone who can hit the 3 AND use being a 3 point threat to take his defender off the dribble as well - "cue up" Jordan Johnson ... Chillicothe's regular season and post season success depends on JJ - I know Coach Huffer DOES rely on him to score from outside AND he has ! in the MT game he knocked down 4 treys (small informational text running along the bottom of your screen *** Chillicothe took a very talented/athletic Miami Trace into OT before losing on a 30 foot 3 pointer at the buzzer of OT - the CAVS had the opportunity to beat MT due to the outside treys by JJ ***) ... vs VC Johnson had NO triples /only 2 points ... another option for what imo should be 8-10 ppg is Will Roderick - he has the build to be a "garbage" guy - he hustles his butt off, crashes the boards at both ends - he needs a few set plays to get him the ball inside off guard penetration - he had 5 points with a triple at the end of the first qtr - he too needs to have spots on the floor where HE is comfortable to put it up, make himself a threat to score ... IF I'm defending CHS I am doing what VC did - play a zone the majority the time - force JJ/Roderick/Coffland to beat me ... Barnes/Maughmer WILL get theirs ... another improved area is that Coach Huffer is working on getting "a bench" - in game 1 vs BC Jason Benson was the ONLY player off the bench - he showed that he CAN score ! (9 pts - 3 triples) ... vs Vinton County (and vs Miami Trace) Simon Roderick & Jayvon Maughmer saw PT as well ... playing time will be the key for these 3 off the bench - the more of the floor they see THE MORE OF THE FLOOR THEY WILL SEE AND CONTRIBUTE ... a 3-5 team ... I have read the posts about records ... 3-4 or 3-5 teams should not be ranked as high as they are ... I have seen 20 of my top 22 teams play (some more than once VC twice/FU twice/Unioto 2/Logan twice/Chillicothe 3 times/Eastern Pike twice) ... I feel very comfortable in being able compare the top 22 teams even if they DON'T all play each other due to schedules/divisions/conferences etc... I look at the talent for sure ...opponents for sure ... I would NOT want to play Chillicothe in the "one and done" season ! all of those "imo's" I pointed out that I see ? I'm a Cheap Seat Guy !! IF I see these things - they AREN'T anything that the coaches don't know and aren't trying to do already ! - I don't profess to know anything ... I DO feel I AM able to compare teams accurately, with impartiality based on specific parameters ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Chillicothe ...

Scoring ... Brandon Maughmer 21, Seth Barnes 19, Hunter Coffland 9, Will Roderick 5, Jordan Johnson 2, Simon Roderick 2
3 pointers ... 6/18 ... Seth Barnes 3, Brandon Maughmer 1, Will Roderick 1, Hunter Coffland 1
FT's ........ 6/10
TOs ....... 21
PntP ...... 28
Pts in Transition ... 6

... Let's review - Cavs need more scoring consistency out of Jordan Johnson ... more scoring from Coffland/Roderick - nothing that I have seen that says the combo can't have a combined 14-15 points per outing ... keep developing the bench, get to a good 7-8 man rotation ... with that said Coach Huffer & staff are doing a GREAT job ... I have seen them 3 times - the freshmen and JV teams have talent ... I need to know who the JV coach is ! he does a great job with those kids ! most people go to games and "watch the game" I go to games and watch EVERYTHING - I have noticed that Coach Huffer is putting together an excellent "program" - I see it in the kids ! the freshmen & JV teams right up to the varsity are ONE - the varsity sits behind the bench during the freshmen/jv games - they cheer on/give kudos to every one of the younger kids for good plays at both ends of the floor, the kids LOOK like they totally ENJOY the game of basketball ! watching the 3 games I have of the Cavs I smile the entire time seeing that JV team - some great pieces coming up to the varsity in the near future - Jayvon Maughmer, Tre Beard, the Knisley kid to begin with ... great job by the coaching staff ...

... on the Vinton County side of the court - Coach Combs' & staff are outstanding ... as I have posted so many times before and I stand behind each post - I haven't seen a better 4 guards all on one team this year - Jake Speakman, Derek Jones/Tristan Bartoe/Naylan Yates - EVERYONE of them took their defender to the hole with at least a step on anyone who tried to guard them - the first 9 fgs for VC were "at the rim", 8 of those were in the 1st quarter - all 5 starters scored in the first qtr ... for THE GAME the Vikings had 46 points in the paint AT THE RIM ! - that's outstanding I don't care who you are ... ALL but 8 points in the paint were from those 4 guards getting into the paint - 6 of the other 8 pts in the paint NOT BY GUARDS were the result of guard penetration & an assist to 6-8 Bryce Damron ... the "tag team" inside game of Damron and Griffith once again was very good imo - neither player tried to do more than they can do - playing within themselves - no big time mistakes at either end of the floor ... IF you are going to play man to man vs VC - they will beat you to the rim and keep doing it until you show them something else ... Chillicothe played man2man for 3 quarters - VC steadily built a 10-12 point lead into the 3rd quarter and kept it up until the officials swallowed their whistles in the 4th LOL - a couple of "no call" strips of the ball on the perimeter by CHS resulting in 2 transition buckets before Brandon Maughmer dropped a 3 pointer as the clock ran out to make the score closer than what it was for most of the 4th ... Vinton County 62 Chillicothe 58 a final ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Vinton County ...

Scoring ... Tristan Bartoe 18, Naylan Yates 15, Derrick Jones 14, Jake Speakman 6, Bryce Damron 6, Eli Griffith 2, Nevan Yates 1
3 pointers ... 1/10 ... Naylan Yates 1
FT's .......... 11/14
TO's .......... 12 - excellent number considering the pressure by CHS
PntP ......... 46
Pts in Transition ... 6

... 1/10 from behind the arc ... a great Napkin Stat imo ... you can look at it as VC didn't shoot well from downtown (which they didn't but the Cavs played some very good perimeter D getting to the shooters AND those rims !!! they have to be the tightest rims in SEOhio ! LOL) ... on the positive side about the 1/10 three point shooting ... the Vikes BEAT a darn good team without the 3 point shot - many teams are either a half court team offensively - they work the ball trying to get inside, or setting up the perimeter shot , at any rate they are comfortable setting the tempo/controlling the tempo being deliberate/patient in the offense ... others live or die by the perimeter shot - they either don't have size in the paint or don't have the ballhandlers to get into the paint ... Vinton County has the ability to do both - 4 guards who will take you/beat you to the rim & finish ... 4 guards who can shoot the 3 ball if you decide to stop the penetration ... I totally enjoy watching the TEAM that Coach Combs has put together - outstanding - and they too are improving ! defensively and offensively I think just as important the Vikings are learning "how to beat an opponent" - they are growing as basketball players ! it's called maturing as basketball players as a TEAM - great stuff imo ...
