This is high school football. Coaches need to wake up!

Not having Sanders at the LT position really showed last night. I hope he returns from injury real soon. I think the Myers to Simpson combination has looked pretty good over the last 2 weeks. Remember we will get London Malone back this week. He is the starter opposite Simpson. But it will mean nothing if Myers has to run for his life. I disagree with siderman when he says Myers is all we have. I think our receivers (Simpson,Malone,Royster, and Evans) would start for West and several other teams right now without a doubt.

that seems to be the thinking of portsmouth staff for the last couple years, and that is what I don't understand. For years they had great teams by running the football. You can have all the receivers you want, but without a running game teams will adjust. After the first series, teams are going turn their LB's loose and chase Meyers everywhere. He isn't big enough to take shot after shot. I was surprised he made it through last season without getting hurt and it will be a miracle if it happens again.

From being there last night I think Myers had time to throw on about 75% of the dropback passes called. He was running for his life on designed rollout plays. I actually was impressed except for some overthrows or underthrown balls. The receivers were constantly behind defenders most of the night. Just lead a little too much. I'd like to have seen more short yardage pass plays but then again maybe it was a toned down playbook. Myers has grown too since last year. He looks taller than last year. JV needed major work on the line. But Jordan has a great arm and is very mobile. Great job by Utley last night. Definitely the team leader. Valley also had some quick kids on the JV. Also another problem for Portsmouth was wrapping up!! Too many times we let Utley slip away especially on his TD run. Overall I expect a good week of practice and the Trojans to come out firing week one. With Malone and maybe Kennedy back?

I also heard Valley appears to have a little team speed, which is good.

Vallet is a lot better theam then people want to give them credit for, "just like last year",and it will show by the end of the season.

Portsmouth just needs to keep working hard and we will be fine.

we went to Minford and came out on top 27 to 6....East who has only lost one or two regular season games in the last two years, and will probably run the table agin this year went to Minford last night and Mionford came out on top of their varsity 27 to 6 in the first two periods, so that tells you something about how good Minford is, so I still feel good about where we are right now.

2old, thanks for your input.

very true bigd you also have to consider the different the 2 type of scrimages were 15 play possesions vs game situation portsmouth will be competitive when healthy this season.

It really looked to me like we made some improvements. We're probably not a playoff team, but we will win 3-6 games depending on health and how some kids develop, that's much better than 1-9.

Portsmouth98, That seems like a reasonable assessment. I was out of town for the Valley scrimmage but based on Minford we are better than last year. I'd say everything would have to go our way to reach the playoffs with 6 or 7 wins. That seems unlikely to me. Question. Did Casey Sanders dress for Valley? He was hurt on the second play against Minford. Just curious. He would be a big loss this early.

Casey Sanders did NOT dress for Valley, neither did starters London Molone, and Jalene Kennedy,,,Sanders "may be back for west" the other two will be back for South Point.....

at least thats what I was told..

my prediction is at least 6 wins;.....hoping for 7 and hping again, thats good enough to land us in the play offs..

I have all the confidence in this team, and beleive with a little luck they could do even better....lots of talent all over on this team.

I missed the scrimmage, but I'm not letting the result change my prediction......I'm picking the Trojans to go 7-3 with an excellent shot at the playoffs.......if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.......we have 14 returning starters which is the main reason for my optimism.

The real football season starts on Friday........everybody right now is 0-0.......I have seen Portsmouth play lackluster scrimmages before and yet still have a good season.

Best wishes to the Valley Indians on a successful season.

I agree. It's good to hear Valley has some speed, and can play with a bigger, stronger team.

I look for good results out of both squads this year!
