Baltimore Ravens get "mystery" first down against Bengals.

Post by my2cents »

Was I the only one who noticed that at the end of the 3rd quarter that the Raven got called for a holding call and had a 1st and 20 from their own 30 yard line. They picked up 15 yards on a pass at the end of the quarter and it would have been 2nd and 5, but when they started the 4th quarter it was 1st and 10. I rewound my DVR twice and there was no other call. The announcers even stated they were about 5 yards short of the first down and you could see the red line on the field marking where they needed to go. They needed to get to the 50 yard line for the first down but came down on the 45, 5 yards short. Then when the 4th qtr started the ball was spotted on the other 45 yard line, but it was 1st and 10. That is a major screw up on the officials. Was there any explanation.

I sometimes wonder if the refs seriously just have maybe a drink or two before the game in their little locker room, or maybe just get stoned before they hit the field.
I mean some of these crews are just jokes.

But how did both coaches, players and 50,000 fans not notice that when they flipped the chains to the other 45 yard line that they really didn't get the first down, which would have been at the 50. Maybe something happened during commercial break, but if there was a penalty resulting in automatic 1st down, the ball would not have still been on the 45.

Another blown call was the interception by the Bengals near the goal line. They blew the play dead after he hit the ground with the ball, but he was never touched. That put the Bengals at about the 2 yard line when he could have been at least out to the 20.

I love my DVR recorder from Time Warner Cable!

I went to the Bengals website and found the play by play and even they are confused about the end of the third quarter. It shows BR with 1st down, running play called back for holding, which would have made it 1st and 20, but it states 1st and 15, then it shows a 15 yard pass and starts the 4th quarter with a 1st down. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't holding a 10 yard penalty, repeat the down. So it could not have been 1st and 15 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The refs had this one right, guys. If the TV said "first-and-20," they just messed it up.

The holding call was a spot foul. Baltimore had a first-and-10 from the 35 yard line, and ran a play where Ray Rice got like nine yards. The holding call came near the end of the run, and was enforced from the 40 (where the hold happened). So they backed it up to the 30 for a first-and-15, and the 15-yard pass was enough to get past the 45 and the first down marker. :122249

From NFL.com's play-by-play
1-10-BAL 35 (:37) (Shotgun) 27-R.Rice up the middle to BLT 43 for 8 yards (68-J.Fanene). PENALTY on BLT-71-J.Gaither, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at BLT 40. {Rice credited with 5 yards rushing due to the penalty}

1-15-BAL 30 (:10) (Shotgun) 5-J.Flacco pass to 27-R.Rice to BLT 45 for 15 yards (41-C.Ndukwe).

END QUARTER 3

So ends the mystery, the announcer had it wrong and the line marker on the TV was wrong. I think I erased my DVR so that will have to be the final say. Thanks Sg

MF, what you are red faced about. I watched the game on TV and it was 2 and 5 at the end of the 3rd quarter and 1 and 10 after the commercial break, with no explanation. Don't be emabarassed just because you weren't astute enough to even notice.
