Police book Browns NT Rogers on felony gun possession at airport

CLEVELAND -- Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers was arrested Thursday at Hopkins International Airport for having a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage.

Rogers, who had been at the Browns' suburban training facility in recent days for a voluntary offseason program, was stopped at a security checkpoint on Concourse C when officials spotted a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his bag, police said in a statement.

Browns DT Shaun Rogers could face a third-degree felony gun charge after being arrested Thursday at the Cleveland airport.

Rogers was arrested at 12:15 p.m. "without incident," transferred to a downtown processing center and booked for carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony.

Sgt. Sammy Morris of the Cleveland Police Department said Rogers was still being held in the city's jail Thursday night.

No charges have been filed at this time, police said, although Rogers could face federal fines for carrying the firearm.

It's not yet known what Rogers, who lives in Houston during the offseason, told officials about the gun or if he has a permit for it. It's also unclear whether he was traveling alone.

Browns president Mike Holmgren said via a team-issued statement that he was aware of Rogers' arrest.

"We will continue to gather additional information, and until the legal process has taken its course, we will reserve any further comment," Holmgren's statement said.

A message seeking comment was left with Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire.

Beyond his legal problems, Rogers likely will face league penalties if it's determined that he violated the NFL's player-conduct policy.

A three-time Pro Bowl pick who has spent two seasons with the Browns, Rogers missed the final five games of 2009 after breaking his leg during a Nov. 29 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns acquired Rogers in a 2008 trade with the Detroit Lions in exchange for cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft pick.

Rogers came to Cleveland with a spotty reputation. The NFL gave him a four-game suspension in 2006 for taking a banned substance to control his weight. In 2007, an exotic dancer claimed Rogers inappropriately touched her at a club in Detroit, but an investigation cleared him.

The Lions also had issues with Rogers' weight and his commitment.

In Ohio, a 3rd degree felony conviction is 1 - 5 years and a fine of $10k to $15K if I am not mistaken.

Why do idiots still get paid for pro sports? To not know about all the trouble players have gotten into over the last few years. Then to not be able to read the signs at the airport. Or just being a responsible adult who has a gun.
Some players need protection but if anyone with the size of Rogers needs a gun for protection they may want to rethink the places they go.

He should be suspended for a year by the NFL then whatever he gets from the legal system. There is no excuse for a gun to be on a plane by someone who should not have them.

Ace you are right about the license not allowing you to carry a gun on an airplane.

Seems like the NFL needs to have mandatory classes for all players on what things they can not do. The NFL has been coming down hard on some players but they still have some players who think rules do not apply to them. Rogers should not get off by pleading not guilty. IF you had drugs in your luggage and just forgot about them you would not be allowed to just say you forgot about them being there.

Police: Browns' Rogers had gun cocked, with a bullet in chamber
NFL.com Wire Reports

Details continue to emerge following Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers' arrest for carrying a loaded handgun through security at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport last Thursday.

According to a police report obtained by the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Monday, Rogers' gun was cocked and had a bullet in the chamber. The report also says there were seven bullets in the magazine and one in the handgun's chamber, which was on safe mode, when he tried to carry it through airport security in a carry-on bag.

Rogers pleaded not guilty Saturday to a concealed weapons charge in Cleveland Municipal Court. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison.

Browns bolster defense in trade
Veteran CB Sheldon Brown is one of two defensive players who came to the Browns in a Friday trade with the Eagles, who received a linebacker and two draft picks. More ... The 31-year-old apologized to his fans and his team Friday after spending a night in jail, saying he didn't mean to take the gun into the airport. Rogers told police he forgot the gun was in his bag when he attempted to fly to Texas on Thursday after participating in the Browns' voluntary offseason program,.

"By no means did I intend or willingly or knowingly take a firearm into the airport," Rogers said. "That's not something I would do."

When reporters asked Rogers on Friday why he needed a weapon, his attorney, Patrick D'Angelo, answered that it wasn't a fair question because his client has a license to carry a firearm.

Rogers has been traveling between Detroit and Cleveland regularly while he tries to sell a home in Michigan.

"I'm truly remorseful, and I really can't put into words how unfortunate the incident is," Rogers said. "Again, I'm completely sorry."

The arrest could put Rogers' future with the Browns in jeopardy. Team president Mike Holmgren issued a statement Thursday saying that he was aware of "what transpired with Shaun Rogers" and that the Browns would reserve comment "until the legal process has taken its course."

Rogers, who missed the Browns' final five games last season with a broken leg, has been the subject of previous trade rumors. He was selected to the Pro Bowl after his first season in Cleveland, which acquired him in a 2008 trade with Detroit, and he's signed through 2013.

You cannot compare drugs to a gun. First of all he is allowed to carry a gun...You cannot carry drugs period. That is a terrible comparison. He forgot his gun was in his bag. He didnt by any means think just because he is an NFL player that he can do whatever he wants and take a gun on a plane. That is just rediculous...c'mon people.
