Because I have no life, I have spent the last couple of hours going over the Reds roster and looking at some of the trades over the years that have gone into making this year's edition of the Reds what it is. I will just look at a few of the trades because sometimes you cant judge a trade until a few years have gone by to evaluate whether it was a good deal or not. Please rate these and perhaps some others that you can come up with:

A. ADAM DUNN- Traded to Arizona on 8/11/08 for P Dallas Buck, C Wilkin Castillo, and P Micah Owings

B. AUSTIN KEARNS- Traded to Washington on 7/13/06 with SS Felipe Lopez for RP Gary Majewski, SS Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris, Daryl Thompson, and RP Bill Bray

C. JOSH HAMILTON- Traded to Texas after the 2007 season for P Edinson Volquez and Daniel Ray Herrera

D. BRANDON PHILLIPS- Reds got in a 4/7/06 trade with Cleveland for P Jeff Stevens

E. SCOTT ROLEN- Reds got in a 7/31/09 trade with Toronto for 3B Edwin Encarnacion, and minor leagures Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart

F. BRONSON ARROYO- Reds got in Spring Training 2006 trade with Boston for OF Wily Mo Pena

G. AARON HARANG- Got from Oakland in 2003 trade along with Joe Valentine for Jeff Bruksch and Jose Guillen

I'd rank them as follows:
1) D
2) G
3) E
4) F
5) C
6) A
7) B

Though I may consider moving the Adam Dunn trade up, since it got rid of a horrible contract for a over rated player. :-D

I'd go:

1) D
2) E
3) F
4) G
5) A
6) B
7) C

1 & 2 are interchangeable. On 3 Arroyo is still pitching solidly for the Reds and Wily Mo is playing in independent leagues. 4 we got Harang who is a better teammate than Guillen could ever imagine. 5 is ahead of 6 because Bray has been better for the Reds than Owings has been. 7 I always hated this trade (Not that I dislike Volquez, I just liked Hamilton that much) Also could you imagine Hamilton in the Reds lineup right now? Stubbs is good going forward but no one ever compared him to Mantle like Hamilton was.

1-c+ because it got rid of an overpaid player but nothing really in return.

2-F Traded good players for nothing in return! I think there was even the dreaded player to be named later in this one to.

3-A The Reds traded away a great outfielder but got an awesome Pitcher in return. also a so so reliever.

4-A++++++++ It's BP nothing needs to be said!!!

5-A Rolen has given the Reds much needed leadership, and they got rid of a bad 3rd baseman.

6-B Willy Mo was still very productive but Bronson has earned his keep in Cinci.

7-A Harang has had a rough season and a half but since he has been here he has been the most productive pitcher on the team. He should have won the Cy Young a couple of years ago.

To the defense of Cleveland getting rid of Phillips...He did absolutley NOTHING with the Indians. He did a 180 when he became a Red.

They also had 4 or 5 pretty good infielders in the minors and they were trying to unload a few. He didn't that well in the Indians organization, when the Reds got him they matched him up with a couple pretty good hitting coaches and that got his swing ready for the Majors.

I don't hold this trade against the Indians, at the time it looked pretty even.

Thank god BP has become the player he is! :122245

Thanks Clevelend ;-) Another gift from the mistake on the lake. :122246

Bill Bray is the best player involved in that trade and he is with the Reds right now.

In my lifetime, the best steal the Reds got was Joe Morgan, Jack Billingham and Dennis Menke for Lee May and Tommy Helms.

At least the Reds gave up two everyday starters for a (up to that time) .500 pitcher, a discontented 2B and the others.

Jeff Stevens has yet to establish himself in the major leagues and the Reds lit him up the other day in Chicago.

But you are exactly right. That trade, added to the foundation already in place in Cincinnati, paved the way for a couple of World Championships.

Getting George Foster for Frank Duffy wasnt a bad deal either.

This just proves we're getting too old. Like a couple of guys sitting on the park bench arguing!

Phillips wasn't a valuable Red until he was put in his #2 or #1 spot....batting him 4th killed theReds for much of 2 seasons

The Rolen trade is priceless.....he is the major reason the Reds act like winners and play like winners

Dunn made a lot of money and is leading the NL in extra base hits by 6...didn't get crap for him

if he's getting a hit better than 1/4 of his at bats, then the strike outs are what is killing him.

He has shown that when he gets the bat to connect to the ball, that he is a very valuable player.
This means, for him, an out isn't just an out.
If you take 1/2 of his strikeouts away, and make them times that he put the ball in play,
his stats would rise to great levels.
He would have somewhere around a .330 BA, 26 HR, 55 Runs, 60 Extra Base Hits.

Now if you give me those numbers, then I can completely ignore the lack of defense, because I have what amounts to Barry Bonds on my team without the steroids.

An out isn't an out reguardless of how it comes. Because if you put the ball in play instead of striking out, then Dunn has a .280 chance of getting safe. And with the extra hits in the same number of at bats, his average would rise

gahs4ever wrote:This just in for those who think Adam Dunn and his strikeouts "killed" the Reds:

Yeah, he's still striking out one of every three ABs this season (100/304), but an out is an out whether it is a groundball, flyball, or strikeout.

.280 BA
48 runs scored
20 HR
54 rbi
47 extra base hits
39 BB

But hey....we got Micah Owings for him. You dont like him? Fine, but trading an everyday player with the numbers he puts up for what they got for him? It makes no sense.

Here is what makes since!! The Reds are in first place without him!! They don't need him and he seems happy in DC.
Why are we still argueing over him?
When the Reds got rid of the "old" Veterans they made a commitment to playing with youth. It has worked so let Dunn have his career in DC or wherever he ends up.

4Ever-
I'm not arguing with your premise here but let me say one thing...there is such a thing as addition by subtraction. Did the Reds win anything with Dunn? Are they winning without him? There may be something there that we don't see.

I dont dislike Dunn but I dont think the offense would be better with him. JMO.

If we still had Dunn, Gomes would be nowhere near the Reds right now and he has been a key in the Reds revival due to the fact that he is a gamer, a leader, and he hits well with runners in scoring position. Dunn is not a gamer or a leader thats just not who he is as a person. Nothing wrong with that. And he does not drive in runs other than by the long ball (hitting 40 Hrs should bring in more than 100 RBI's) and correct me if I'm wrong but didnt he go a whole calendar year at one point without a sacrifice fly? The Reds offensive style now is the complete opposite of Dunn's style.

My final say..Dunn was a stat compiler. He didn't deliver in the clutch. Now, if his team around him wasn't good enough, he can only be justified as a draw to fill seats. I'm sure if they could've gotten more in return for him, they would have. Let's concentrate on the most pressing need right now...like a bullpen!
