He's good at beating fans with metal folding clairs though....I'm pretty sure he was the one who went to down on a fan in the Rangers bullpen a few years ago while playing for the Rangers....Was the fan wrong? Yeah..But to take it that far was a bit much...

Tonight is a first for the Reds closer this season. Given all the Reds bullpen woes this year, I believe Baker has done as good a job as possible in protecting his closer.

Cordero is pitching in his 37th game tonight, but Baker has never used him for more than one inning in any appearance UNTIL TONIGHT. The thing about Coco is he seldom comes in and slams the door this year, and with each appearance seemingly gets more scary.

I am watching the game right now with the A's and the Reds FINALLY scored two runs in a game on this road trip to take a 2-1 lead against Oakland. I had to leave for a minute and when I returned, the score was tied 2-2. Coco does it again!!! Blown save #5 on the year.

THEN the Reds erupt in the top of the 10th to seemingly put the game away, scoring 4 times, and then in the bottom of the 10th he walks the first two batters he faces!!!!! GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK! Now Herrera is in to try to nail it down, and if successful, guess who gets the win?

Herrera surrenders a hit to the first man and now the bases are loaded with none out and the tying run to the plate.
Groundout scores one run charged to Coco. 6-3! Now Smith is in. Groundout brings in another run, also charged to Cordero. 6-4. Strikeout! Game over! Save Smith! Cordero gives up 3 ER in 1 IP!

Here's the deal: in 37 appearances totaling 34+ innings, Cordero has only pitched clean innings ten times all year; 27% of the time. In the 33 innings going into tonight, he had allowed 33 hits, 14 runs all earned, 4 homers, and walked 14 while striking out 30. That's 47 baserunners in 33 innings. As Chris Welch just said, Baker doesnt have enough Tums to get through this game.

A win is a win is a win, but this is a most disturbing three month trend out of Cordero with no end in his inconsistency in sight. ERA now at 4.50

Coco is struggling this year, but he has 18 saves in 23 chances and has three losses. I would not classify that as seldomly slamming the door.

Sure he is not very consistent right now. Baker doesn't have many other options.

The only door Cordero is slamming is on Dusty Baker. Rhodes has only gave up one run all season, he should be the closer.

Nick Masset remains the biggest enigma on the 2010 Reds. Coming off an outstanding 2009 campaign, he was/is being counted on to get the Reds from the starter to Cordero. He is making $1.035M this year to do just that, and he pitches consistently in the mid 90s.

In 2009 he got into 74 games and in 76 IP, he only allowed 54 hits while having a 70/24 K to BB ratio and fashioning a 2.37 ERA. You couldnt ask for more.

By comparison, this year in 37 appearances totalling 31 IP, he has allowed 41 hits with a 39/16 K to BB ratio and a 6.25 ERA

What a difference a year makes. He's throwing as hard and getting worse results. Obviously walking 4.5 batters per 9 innings is unacceptable for any pitcher; especially when they are tatooing him for more than a hit per inning.

I think a lot of it is that teams have seen him pitch and they have film on him to! That makes a big difference!

From observing him on TV, I wonder if he isnt suffering from both a confidence problem compounded by a lack of command of his pitches in the strike zone.

I would like to see the numbers on how many pitchers come in a game and have 1-2-3 innings.

If a batter hits a slump you let him hit through it! In Coco's case I think you have to do the same thing. Unless he is injured you need to let him pitch throught this.

Ya gotta love Reds fans. Last night when somebody finally got to Rhodes and he gave up the three tenth inning runs, the Reds fans gave him a standing ovation as he left the field in appreciation for his great run.

That was a classy thing they did. Rhodes has been the man this year, The Reds will be able to count on him the rest of the way I just hope they find 1 or 2 others to count on along with him.
