Athens county football

Post by dilligaf »

Ok since Athens county teams havent had much luck in the playoffs for awhile here is my thoughts on what would help.Seeing how trimble is in d 6 maybe if athens and ny sent two or three of there top players to Trimble to play next year.I think trimble would make some noise in the playoffs.I do know of alot of kids who go play where they think they will win.there is alot of that around the columbus erea.

just my thoughts :)

Yea that would move them up to high in divisions need to keep it small.but with the amount of good players that larger divisions would have.5 or six good player on a division 6 team makes a huge difference. :)

I don't know if Athens County would ever have just one high school, but there will be consolidations sooner rather than later. I don't think Athens County will have 5 school districts much longer. More like 3-4.

I don't think that is how it will work out. If all the scary political adds that the Hugh Jidette supporters, I mean Obama/Strickland supporters put out about consolidation do come true, I think we will have one school in the county. But that is better anyway, since we will have a tried and true excuse to use if we lose any games. All we have to regurgitate is, "Yes we have D1 total numbers but we still only have the same number of boys playing football as an average D5 team does. Plus we offer a lot more sports than any other school in D1 so we should really be thought of as just a D5 team." Then if anyone calls us on it we can accuse them of degrading the accomplishments of kids.  So I think one school is best so our county can join hands in using this excuse. ;-)

Or the one school would just kick @$$ and not have to worry about making exuses. Just a thought :122245

Agreed. First step: be like nelsonville and schedule tougher non-conference games!!!!!

Look for one school system with two high schools North Athens and South Athens. It will be here within the next 8-10 years. All schools system must cut overhead and admin, and yes some teaching and coaching positions will go. The state can not continue to fund all these small school systems. Schools must be lean and mean!

The state government is not going to waste the millions and millions it just spent in the last 15 years building schools...by consolidating the actual BUILDINGS and having to BUILD MORE BUILDINGS. What Governor-Elect Kasich surely is planning - and communicating poorly, I might add - is the consolidation of upper administration and school boards. You may have one school DISTRICT, but the same number (and location) of elementaries, middle schools, high schools, etc. Why would you negate all of those millions in new school building construction just to build more new buildings - all in an effort to SAVE MONEY through economies of scale? The present buildings in Athens county and beyond are not sufficient for the type of physical consolidation that is being spoken of here; i.e. there isn't a building in Athens County that could house (or is centrally located, or both) all high school students in the county. Most other rural counties, I would imagine, are the same way.

Now, do I agree with this? That's another discussion.

Obviously Syntax has some clue of what is actually going to happen. But to entertain myself with your jibberish, I was thinking it would be better to combine into one county school. That way we could join the SEOAL and supplant Logan from their status of being by far the largest school in the league.

Good point, Heavy D. It is entertaining to discuss, but not realistic to actually do. Even two high schools would be enormous - and cost-creating. In the late 60's, consolidation was much easier and made more sense (financially speaking). Take Nelsonville-York, for example. High school-wise, you basically merged one high school in town with...one that is, what, two or three miles away? With that in mind, I should really only have to mention one district that, land-wise, should scare off any mention of physical consolidation: Federal-Hocking.

The one district per county thing actually works very well. WVA and some other states do it. I think it is a great way to cut down on Adm coasts. Now 1 super gets paid instead of 5, Thats one schoolsboard that has to be elected, so forth and so on down the line.. It is possible that a high school or 2 might get shut down but in this day in age it is the best solution.

O & B,
You sound for sure thats a good thing. Now answer this honestly, what if one of those schools was NY that would get shut down? They are the 2nd smallest school in the county and according to some arguments the smallest schools should go first. If they do shut down they should close them all and open new schools with new colors, new names, new mascots and new district lines. Wipe the slates clean and start from scratch in every county.

I think whats going to happen is everyone is going to pay the same taxes in the county. They are not going to waste resources in the buildings. NY is building, Trimble just received a 600,000 grant to fix roofs and problems associated with OSFC. All the money comes in and gets sent to 5 different school districts. Those districts will share administration cost and resources. Each current district will elect one board member to represent the school board. Everyone will lose some of their identity, yet everyone will still have their own schools. There will be alot of upset districts. Athens, Alex, Ny will lose some money to Trimble, and Federal Hocking. Trimble and Federal will lose more of their identity than the other three because with those new funds there will always be mandates that are to be followed.

I don't know if it will work, but if they force consolidation. Then the only way to make it work fully is that there be no buckeyes, tomcats, lancers, spartans, or bulldogs and start over new. Now I ask again O&B are willing to give up the buckeyes and be part of the bigger picture?

Consolidation does not necessarily mean build more buildings neither.

When Nelsonville and York consolidated, elementary schools remained as they were.

Nelsonville High School became the Nelsonville-York Middle School.

York High School became the Nelsonville-York High School.

There were no new buildings built at NY until the 1997 opening of the consolidated elementary school, 30 years after the consolidation occurred.

I'm not saying that anyone will like it. Something has to be done though. Ny is the only school in the county that is growing BTW!
If they close down all the schools and start over that would cost a lot of money and defeat the purpose. All I'm saying is things are gonna change. I never said I was okay with and schools closing I just said it is a reality. Lets be honest there are 2 districts in Athens county who are in a lot of trouble. Federal Hocking and Trimble. If you can think of a way to get them back in shape then I say plaese please please make it known.

O & B has a point that those two districts have serious problems. Not for sure what their answer is, though. Consolidation is always an easy answer to discuss but doesn't eliminate every problem.

Consolidating an entire county is much different than consolidating two 1,000 student districts that are separated by a small hill, not to mention Buchtel-York's facilities were nearly brand new. And per my aforementioned post, something new will certainly have to be built (either massive additions to preexisting buildings or new buildings) in order to "consolidate" the entire county's high school students to one or two buildings.

And don't bring in emotions from lost identities of communities and other consequences. Just ask people that live in Carbon Hill, Murray City, Zaleski, Coalton, etc. I wonder if anyone has ever performed an actual study (with inflation adjusted) to verify if money actually WAS saved in the last 40+ years compared to what would have been spent? Contemplating economies of scale doesn't necessarily mean that money will, or has, been saved.

People from Nelsonville know how much animosity can exist when consolidation happens. They still get in fist fights when some one leaves the York off the end of their name for gosh sakes! People have been fired from local jobs for such blasphemy. Take the Sultan of Smack for instance. He is forced to do 10,000 Hail Mary's if he slips up and commits this mortal sin.
