Improving the safety of those who step on the field should be a priority. You can mention all you want about the highly paid stars of the league. What about those who try to make the team and are on special teams. They go out and when they get hurt they do not have the money that would last for them to be permanently damaged.
Even Jim McMahon did not make the Chicago Bears Super Bowl team reunion because he does not remember much of that time.
Tackling in the NFL was getting more like Pro Wrestling where anything goes. You can still have a tough game while providing a safer environment for the players to play in. The NFL has taken the wedge blocking away on kick returns. They have moved the defensive players away from a long snapper so that he does not get hit with his head down. The NFL is trying to clean up some that they have not enforced in the past. One of the big things going on now is the past players who many are in terrible shape without money to live on.
You can say what you want about the game suppose to be tough. But young kids watch the NFL and they want to do some of what they see on tv. When their bodies can be permanently damaged. Those are the players who do not get paid.
Cleaning the sport up is good for all who plays the game and who will play the game in the future. As well as when they are done playing.
Mike Peria view on Steelers Harrison hit during Bills game
Re: Mike Peria view on Steelers Harrison hit during Bills ga
Something is wrong somewhere. How can someone get fined the same amount for a quote in quote bad hit as two players throwing down and fighting? That's right, the two guys fighting one would think would have to pay a real hefty fine and get a long vacation got the same penalty as Harrisons hit and no vacation.James may as well have gotten his money's worth at that rate.As for the Texans and Titans players in the fight, they should sit the rest of the year for what they did...Harrison would be...
Re: Mike Peria view on Steelers Harrison hit during Bills ga
Yes, I'd call him that to his face. That's what he is and it's partially the NFL's fault for playing favorites with him. Good QB? Sure, who's not if you give them 10 seconds to throw the ball? The NFL, like pro wrestling, thrived on creating heroes and villans who get them publicity. Brady is one of their cash cows. Baby boy gets what baby boy wants. Harrison is a bigtime publicity stunt too. He's one of the "bad guys". They want you to hate him - it gives the league publicity. If all of these hits hadn't happened in one week, this wouldn't have even been an issue this year. You had two players in Johnson and Finnigan throwing haymakers at each other without helmets and Johnson gets to play on Thursday? If they did that on the street, they'd get arrested. Don't tell me the NFL cares about it's players. They want to make money, that's it. I rarely watch it anymore and that's the biggest reason why. Just a bunch of overpaid "thugs" and or primaddonas who may or may not play their hardest and whose loyalty lies only to the all-mighty dollar, not franchises, not fans, not to pride. That's why, for my dollar, I'd rather spend $5 going to watch high school kids who play for nothing but community, school, and pride and will do their darndest. Keep on watching your Soap Opera for guys. I prefer watching football players, not entertainers.gahs4ever wrote:1. I would bet my house that you wouldn't call Tom Brady a "pretty-boy sissy" to his face. They wouldnt be able to identify your remains with dental records.
2. At least you are honest when you say, "The safety of the players has nothing to do with it."
3. Everything else you say is pure speculation and your opinion. At least the NFL is doing something about protecting their most important resource, which is their players.
4. If you got B_ _CH slapped one time up side your head, you would change your opinion, if and when you woke up.

Fuzz if you rarely watch the NFL anymore than maybe you shouldn't be as judgemental against them. Then you go on to say you would rather watch high school kids play. Well many of those high school kids watch the NFL. They watch those hits then try to do them. High School players may not get paid well in most cases as those in the NFL. Trying to provide a safer football game for all is a good idea. Making the sport safer and doing better tackles so that the player sees what he hits.
Fighting happens and rarely does a player get hurt by it. The rules for fighting needs looked at but right now it is more toward those who have multiple fights. If they would have kept going at it after trying to be broken up then that would be different.
The NFL says one thing but then wants to add 2 more games. Some of the blame for the way the NFL has let things go goes to the players Union also. Player safety needs to be infront for both.

nothing wrong with the game evolving, The NFL did go from leather helmets to facemask to helmets with microphones right ? not all change is bad. players on stretchers is not cool. MD
Re: Mike Peria view on Steelers Harrison hit during Bills ga
I heard they were going to hook the QB up to this [forget the name of it] to where their uniform turns a bright red as soon has they release the ball and will turn a dark purple when they are hit to hard.

This is hilarious. Do you honestly think football players expect to play football for 10-20 years and not get hurt or suffer side effects of playing a game that whose fundamentals are blocking and tackling? Give me a break. And that's not being a bloodthirsty Roman spectator, it's being a realist.
