Cam may not be as good offensively as some of these guys mentioned and didn't have the "team" around him in some of the high school games mentioned but he's been a solid contributor to the WVU basketball team, has won the Big East tournament, has gone to a final four, is a very good defensive player (named player of the game a couple times) on national TV and does an excellent job of rebounding as a role player. He's gotten more national media exposure and TV time at WVU than the others above probably combined and may get a lot more in the next few weeks if the mounties can pick it up at tourney time. JMO

I heard then-OSU coach Gary Williams apologized to Webster's coaching staff for not opening the videotape they had sent after he watched Brett dominate Ohio North/South game.
But leading the NCAA D1 in scoring his senior year at Morehead State (28.2ppg) and being drafted in the second round by the Sacramento Kings trumps all in southeastern Ohio. Never played a minute in NBA though as he was drafted by Minnesota Twins in 4th round and went on to top out at AAA. On top of all that, a quality person who is still a big part of the Webster school system and community.*
Only seen an old game tape of him in basketball, GREAT player. I'll back you up and say the best most talented athlete in SEO histor
For girls athlete i'll say Marlene Stollings of Beaver Eastern

I forgot all about South Webster's "Top Gun" Brett. I'll mention Mike Rose too from way back in the day.

Brett Roberts....NO DOUBT...
Already listed above, led the nation in scoring his senior year in college, drafted into the NBA...
My senior year in high school which was also Bretts senior year [1988] we were undefeated & ranked 3rd in the state...I believe it was game 16 we traveled to Webster...We ended up winning the game, but Brett had 42 points, 21 rebounds & 11 blocked shots...No joke...I actually still have the newspaper article...GREAT basketball player!

Kevin Martin. Zanesville.
Not only drafted but he is a beast in the NBA. I never saw him but if we are comparing resumes I just thought I would throw his name out.

I don't know if it was the best, but back in the early 70's,North Gallia and Eastern had some pretty good teams. In the 71-72 season,7 out of 10 starters went on to play some college ball.

Eastern had Dennis Eichinger and Howie Caldwell with supporting cast and North Gallia had Arthur Clark and ..... someone help me out with the guard that was all-league on those teams, really fast and could penetrate and shoot ? (All these before the 3 point line you know).gobucks31 wrote:I don't know if it was the best, but back in the early 70's,North Gallia and Eastern had some pretty good teams. In the 71-72 season,7 out of 10 starters went on to play some college ball.

Actually, Cam is about 6'6". Cam blew his knee out before or just into the first couple of games in his senior season and didn't play again until the tourney. With Cam at 100%, Barnett couldn't get within 75 yards of sniffing his jockstrap. And at 50%, Robbie might have gotten a taste. Give me Barnett's NCAA resume. Epic Fail.Ironman92 wrote:Cam Thoroughman.....can't believe he plays for WVU. But Cam was 6'8 and could shoot.....odd he is now much stronger and rarely shoots at all and is pretty much a bruiser for WVU.....but it is awesome that he actually contributes on a solid Big East team....few can match that.
As for why Aldridge didn't play the first 5 games of his senior season and went from Cincinnati to W. Carolina to Mountain State? The Cronic, or hippie lettuce. If you can't understand that then you're too old to be on here in the first place.
B. Roberts and R. Scarberry were the best pure shooters to EVER come out of SEO. But this thread is about TEAM. The '87 team out of Green was the best, bar none, from this school. Roach, Wheeler, Darnell, Randy Scarberry and Wilburn went 20-0 and barring a broken collarbone by B. Roach before the Regional semis, could have brought a title to this sleepy little redneck town.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Didn't Clay beat a 17-3 Western Pike team in the first round of that year? (I do not rememeber)
Tell me what % he was then? Either you suck at math or you are hideously overexaggerating. So at 50% he might have gotten s a sniff of his jockstrap.....well whatever % he was Barnett just smoked him for 94 feet of the court until Thouroughman fouled out INT THH 3RD QTR. Thoroughman looked darn good hitting 25-28 footers in warmups.....but he hardly never got a look. He was hounded by a 6'2 kid weighing 50 lbs less but better all-around athlete who scored 1470 points in high school.....but apparently Cam was - 20% or something.

Cam Thoroughman played his first game back his senior year after his injury in a game against Beaver Eastern @ Clay in early February. Not that it makes a lot of difference in the conversation, but he did have a couple games back in the regular season to prepare for the sectional.

Aldrige didn't go to UC because Huggy bear went out west. Perhaps the seeds were the true cause, but he can't complain now. OHSAA STATE CHAMPION. GREAT COLLEGE CAREER. PRO BALL IN KANGAROO LAND.

How did that game against a VERY good Eastern Beaver team go? I forget but I seem to recall him coming back and knocking off one of the top SOC teams as Eastern and Western were as good as ever and had tremendous records.

Eastern won when they played @ Clay in 06' for Cams first game back. Led by a great shooting performance from Eric Gullett. They went on to win the conference and a sectional title. They lost to Whiteoak in the District Semis, a team lead by Robbie Barnett who has been a topic above already. For good reason too, he was a tough player.Ironman92 wrote:How did that game against a VERY good Eastern Beaver team go? Re: Best Team in your schools Modern History 1970-2011
South Gallia hasn't been around that long so I will mention the 1991 Hannan Trace team that made it to the regionals in Dayton. The team won 19 games and had regular season wins over South Point, 2 wins over Fairland, 2 wins over the SEOAL champion Jackson team and Point Pleasant. One game they lost was by 7 points to a very strong Chesapeake team in the championship of South Point holiday tournament. They went on to defeat Southern in the first round of the districts and then easily defeated Franklin Furnace Green (ranked #3 in state) in the district championship. The regionals were played in Dayton that year. HT played Cincinnati Lockland in the regional semis. After leading the game through 3 quarters the Wildcats lost in a heartbreaker. Of course less than 2 years later Hannan Trace was consolidated into River Valley before being de-consolidated and reopened as South Gallia 5 years later.

Donnie Johnson, Zach Shawver, Tom Bose, Cody Caldwell, Travis McKinness, Anthony, Dey, etc.
IMO 4ever, I was remembering when I watched the 73-74 team with Niday, Valentine & Price etc., it was better than the one listed above. If it wasn't the "Modern Era 1970-2011", I believe Gallipolis' all-time best teams were the ones from the mid 50's led by John Milhoan and Jim Thomas that won like 42 SEOAL games in a row. (And you gotta remember, back then most teams didn't always play standard 20 game season's like they do now). I wasn't around back then but my dad's school played against them.
