Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Fantastic win for a very classy LE team. Came into Athens and left with a big early season win. Great team, fundamentally sound, and a super coach. Congrats LE.
Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Logan Elm 60
Athens 59 final
...THAT was a GREAT high school basketball game !!! the 2nd week of the season to have 2 TEAMS clash on the hardwood at such a high level - outstanding ... to have a game so early in the season to have such a great impact on the seeding come February WOW! 93dog was right on the money in the post game radio wrap up when he pointed out that both Athens and Warren may have losses on their pocket schedules due to playing the Waterson's/ASVSM/Lucasville Valley's AND add the two losses this week Warren to Portsmouth, tonight's Athen loss to LE ... it is ALL going to play BIG during seeding for the Logan D2 Sectional ...
... Logan Elm looked like they were in midseason form - not surprising as I have seen Logan Elm teams look like they were in midseason form the first game of the season over the years LOL ... Athens had all of the pieces of a team that IS one of the best in Southern Ohio - size, inside outside game, Burrow/Watson as the marque players with the addition of a freshmen PG ( Giffin Lutz) who will continue to grow into another piece to the Bulldog closet full of talent ...yet AHS fell short by 1 point - still rounding into basketball form from a successful football season the Bulldogs did not have ALL cylinders working in hythm as TEAM - ie. the Leuhrman's were non factors at either end of the floor - 6 points for the game offensively ... Zacchia Saltzman had 6 key points in the 2nd half but seemed an afterthought until the 2nd half ... both Joe Burrow and Ibi Watson ARE as advertised - OUTSTANDING ... Ibi is special - smooth as they come, seemingly able to get his shot whenever he wants it ... at times everything clicked for the Bulldogs but it seemed a chore offensively - with individuals needing to get it done rather than TEAM ... with all that said Athens IS one of the elites Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ... Logan Elm IS hitting on ALL cylinders ... a true pleasure to watch at both ends of the floor - I had the opportunity to see LE take on a very good Circleville team Friday night in Round Town - a 65-51 Braves win ... then again tonight on the road in A'town - both games showed me an outstanding, mature high school basketball TEAM - not blessed with size but a group of seniors that KNOW how to play as a TEAM at both ends of the floor ... no question Dillon Young is the floor general, keeps TEAM LE calm under pressure, hits the key shot or finds the open teammate - both nights LE showed me a group of players who know each other, know where each other is on the floor and trusts each other to score, make the extra pass, help on the defensive end ... great stuff to watch from the cheap seats ... Logan Elm has a team full of guards, ALL can score which is THE biggest difference from last year - Logan Thompson IS a threat offensively, no hesitation as to whether he will take a shot or not , he KNOWS he is going to score ... last season LE offensively was Dillon Young this season it is Dillon young, Logan Thompson, Ridge Young, Trent Congrove, Waylon Altrip ... defensively they ALL work as one, helping, communicating , crashing the boards ... all of this and LE doesn't foul, doesn't turn the ball over , stays calm due to the maturity ... TEAM Logan Elm is a reflection of both Coach Stiverson and Coach Holbert on the court ... Logan Elm 60 Athens 59 a final ...
Pfloyd Napkin Stats - Athens
Scoring ... Joe Burrow 23, Ibi Watson 22, Zacchia Saltzman 6, Ryan Leuhrman 4 , Giffin Lutz 2, Adam Leuhrman 2
3 pointers ... 4/7 ... Burrow 2, Watson 2
FT's ... 9/16
TOs ... 16 ... in a close game vs the caliber of team as LE this was the killer stat ...
Pfloyd Napkin Stats - Logan Elm
Scoring ... Logan Thompson 19, Dillon Young 17, Ridge Young 10, Trent Congrove 8, Waylon Altrip 3, Casey Tyler 2
3 Pointers ... 10/27 ... Dillon Young 3, Thompson 3, Ridge Young 2, Congrove 1, Waltrip 1
FTs ... 8/11
TOs ... 9
... as I said - what a great high school basketball game between 2 of the best in Southern/Southeastern Ohio ... glad I was able to be in attendance ... great to catch up to 93dog, Coaches Stiverson, Holbert, Skinner all are class acts among the coaching brethren ... my Convo cheap seat partner Mr McPherson & son ... enjoyed running into all - makes traveling SEO worth the time for sure ...

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
I made the decision to stay close to home this evening and watch Teays Valley, which ended Bloom-Carroll's 33 game MSL-Buckeye winning streak last night, at Grove City instead of coming down to The Plains. Sounds like I missed an outstanding game.
Huge win for Logan Elm, which is playing extremely well as a team. I have to believe Athens is only going to get better following its long football run. They'll get their legs under them and get en sync and be an extremely tough team to beat.

Logan elm bombed 3s all night and Athens never abandoned that zone that was not working...at all until the last minute when the game was out of reach. Unbelievable decision to stick with the zone for four quarters.
Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Gloaming I thought same thing. I watched it on tv. Athens played man in 3 spots and were minus 12.

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
I don't think you could have played THAT Logan Elm team man-to-man all night. You'd be asking four 6'4 kids to guard a bunch of lightning quick mice that pass extremely well and know how to run an offense. They would have picked Athens apart on back door passes, drives to the basket, pick & rolls, etc ... etc ...
Logan Elm lights up the scoreboard and were held to 60 points. Not a bad outing defensively, IMO.
Despite Athens turning over the ball a ton, 16 in fact (because of LE's quickness) ... despite not being patient on offense at times ... despite all the other flaws that accompany a team with shortened practice time ... Athens STILL SHOULD HAVE WON ... The Bulldogs going 9-of-16 from the free throw line? really? They NEVER shoot that bad from the charity stripe. They hit their free throws and they win the game.

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
ATHENS 9-of-16 ... free throw line
LOGAN ELM 8-of-11
ATHENS - 16 TURNOVERS
LOGAN ELM - 9 TURNOVERS
GAME OVER.
THAT FORMULA IS A RECIPE FOR A LOSS ALMOST 90% OF THE TIME.

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Athens isn't going anywhere with that zone. In man atleast, if you get beat, someone can help and the shots are contested. LE picked the zone apart. Of course it can improve but outside of Ridgedale in 2001, I've never seen a team execute a zone well in high school ball but Athens is young and will improve.
And where is the post game? Burrow looks like a pretty strong kid. Why not put him on the block and work the smaller teams over. I was just surprised having heard about the plethora of talent for athens(ibi looks like the real deal at times) and then seeing them, they've got some work to do. Should be a really fun team to watch next year

You must not have watched DII Bishop Watterson beat the favored ASVSM in the state finals last year. The Gloaming wrote:LE picked the zone apart. Of course it can improve but outside of Ridgedale in 2001, I've never seen a team execute a zone well in high school ball

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Logan Elm was (3-0), had scored 222 points and were averaging 74.0 points per game heading into the match-up with Athens.
They scored 60.
Not sure they really PICKED ATHENS APART. The Bulldogs were playing only their 3rd game of the season and have had only 2 weeks of practice. They also had a freshmen in for most of the game and two sophomores. The GROUP as a whole have not had a lot of time to gel yet.
But they will be seasons end.

I didn't see the state championship game. The point is LE had tons of open looks from deep but really had to earn buckets in the paint. I have never seen a team stick with a zone for the entire game when the other team can hit the 3. Nothing beats good ol man to man D. I'm not saying Athens isn't good, they're just raw and I was really surprised at the decision to zone till it was too late.

Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Case and point...Athens up 6 late, gives up two open 3s and momentum. Make them shoot over your 6'4s or earn them at the stripe
Re: Athens vs Logan Elm
Tough home crowd on the Bulldogs. Remember they've probably not had more than 10 practices together and are getting their legs under them from the long football run. Maybe Athens felt it needed to play zone and not make it an up-and-down game, like Logan Elm wants it to be. Logan Elm can score a lot of points in transition, and its also better at taking the ball to the hole this season.
If there is a rematch, which has a fair chance of happening, you may see a different look from Athens when the starting lineup is used to one another and they have their legs under them.

I'm just a fan. I went to see Watson cause I've heard he's legit. No Tues to Athens other than growing up in the couni dont want it to sound like im bashing. I saw a lot of potential but completely disagree with how Athens offence runs and giving up open 3s cause they couldn't"keep up" against LEs guards. Size wise this team reminds me of Eastern when they went to state and that team could guard the hell out of the ball.
