Its already been established that Logan has a county school district of over 300 square miles, which causes it to lose many of it students who don't play sports because they don't have a way home if they don't ride the bus. So, Logan drop down to a D-III or D-IV from a D-II in numbers of kids then available for sports. Athens, big, bad Athens that is, remains a city school district of 87 square miles that leaves most of it D-III students available for sports with little travel problems. Your numbers game is a joke. Logan then schedule D-I teams to play with the disadvantage outlined. What "risk" do the bullpuppies take ?

You wear YELLOW well.
This is the same argument several people have used against you when you want to compare SEO to NEO. The same argument that you constantly say is BS. You cant have it both ways pal.

if your kids are at such a disadvantage and don't have rides ... how the hell do you have such an enormous marching band?

just curious.
Marching Band is a completely different deal to athletics at Logan. It's a co-curricular activity, not extra-curricular.

Therefore attendance on Friday nights and all other competitions are mandatory and a graded activity. Parents MIGHT have to provide a ride a few times a year. Practices are DURING the school day, not after school. The band has ONE evening practice per week for 10 weeks a year. And that's only for the high school, junior high band is all during the school day.

Bottom line - transportation much less of an issue for band. Its part of the school day.

If we could find a way to have a "football class" for the end of the day to replace Phys Ed we'd be set ;-)

bman wrote:If the TVC doesn't mind Athens in the league - they voted them in and there is no movement to get them out - why should you mind? Is the TVC weaker year-in-and-out typically compared to the SEOAL? Yes, but that gap has radically closed due to the shrinking SEOAL.

Athens is trying to schedule up. Zanesville in football; Akron SVSM in basketball. If Athens was playing Miller, Crooksville, Belpre, Northwest and Huntington in its non-league, I could see you busting their chops, but they aren't.

Also I find it interesting this square mileage argument comes up now with Logan. Where was it when Logan was winning the SEOAL nearly every year?
I've been making this argument for years.

The OHSAA counts enrollment only and ignores all other factors that affect a schools ability to compete.

That doesn't mean I have to ignore them as well. Logan-Hocking is the 9th largest (in terms of square miles) school district in Ohio. If you don't think that affects their ability to compete, then we'll agree to disagree.

Every time you make ridicules comments about Athens' schedule - you're basically spitting on, and calling, Nelsonville-York, Meigs, Alexander, Wellston and Vinton County names.

so classy, let me tell ya.

and you've done it about 20 times now!

just a simple question, how many teams has the Seoal sent to the 2013 OHSSA football playoffs? Im so glad Portsmouth is leaving this league, not because we are scared of the mighty, but I knew we would not be able to compete yearly in football, the numbers do not add up, and if we dominate the OVC.....like that's going to happen........you guys can come and whine about us being a Big Fish.....funny the jealousy

The SEOAL will survive. It may undergo changes in number of members but as long as the core of Jackson-Gallia-Logan holds together, opportunities and possibilities will be there for others. It makes so much sense for the SEOAL to survive. Those who would write it's obituary do so at there own folly. But it does make for great rumor mongering.

In my opinion should consist of teams that can each benefit someway,

Jackson, Gallia, Logan, Athens, Wheelersburg, Wavery, Vinton County, Portsmouth

Jackson - Baseball, Football
Gallia - baseball, Football, sometimes Basketball
Logan - football, baseball, sometimes basketball
Athens, football baseball basketball, track
burg - BASEBALL, football, basketball
Waverly - baseball, basketball football
Vinton county - basketball,
Portsmouth - basketball

I believe all of these schools have volleyball, soccer, track and field as well

Not going to happen.. but that would make for a very competitive league in most sports.

Don't know about Athens in track over the last dozen years Athens finishes well behind Logan, Marietta, Warren and Gallipolis. When the SEOAL was at 10 teams Athens was last or near last with one year wondering if they would score a single point.

in regards to numbers alone in the TVC I assumed they were doing very well, by just having enough kids to fill all the spots. I don't have any results to back my claim. Just participants

LetsGoPSU: Don't think anyone will accuse Portsmouth of being the "big" fish in the OVC.......right now, we are the 4th largest school in the conference, with Fairland, Rock Hill, and South Point all being larger.

Can you put the color in gold? Athens is green and gold ... they haven't been green & yellow since the late 90's.

Thanks

I'm still trying to figure out this pond analogy.

Athens is 31-3 in its last 34 games ... and ONLY 15 of those 34 games were against the TVC-Ohio ... less than half.

I mean, do they jump back and forth from pond to pond? is there a tunnel or something? Do you scoop em up with a net and carry them over?

When you guys make remarks about being a big fish in a little pond - its inaccurate information. You are conveniently leaving out more than half of the opponents. Its like calling Ohio State a big fish because of its non-league schedule - even though they still have to make their way through the Big Ten. It doesn't make sense.

And calling a team yellow would make perfect sense if they refused to play someone. Athens didn't - they not only played the SEOAL, they completely thrashed them. That is not the definition of being yellow. How can a team be scared when they go out and beat Jackson, Gallia and Warren by a combined score of 153-25? Heck, little ol Fairland put up almost twice as many points in one game versus Athens than all three SEOAL teams did combined.

Athens is 8-2 vs the SEOAL over the last THREE years ... that is hardly being scared or afraid to play someone.

Can a moderator please change the thread byline to read: BIG FISH OR LITTLE FISH OR NORMAL SIZED FISH.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Seriously folks I don't know why Athens left the SEOAL, maybe it was travel and a better gate, maybe it was to compete better, but today it doesn't matter they are not in the SEOAL. They could beat any SEOAL team this year and maybe next year (although I will root for Jackson next year when we meet in the playoffs). After that I am not so certain though.

Bottom line, SEOAL wise, if Jackson, Gallia, Logan stand tall, schedule some quality non-league games to increase their overall competitiveness and wait for this thing to swing full cycle, the SEOAL will remain, and sooner not later be back to 6-7 members which I think is the right number. From what I hear we will have one announced soon and the other this spring.

Now, you guys can go back to catching fish and all that other jargon.
