Something will have to give. Maata has impressed everyone including his team mates.

Maata can only play a maximum of 9 games this season before this season counts as the first year of his entry level contract. Monday's game vs the Avs will be game #9. He also can only play a max of 40 games this season. Once he plays game #41, this season will count as an accured season and then he will be a unrestricted free agent after the 2019-20 season. Also, he can't be sent to the minors. He can only go back to his junior team in London or to a professional league overseas.

My guess is the Pens keep him around and let him develop at the NHL level but scratch him from time to time during the first 60 games of the season, not including an injury time, to build his stamina. He is only 19 and a defenseman. If he makes it that far, he is the real deal and the Pens will then make a move for a Cup run.

Somebody on defense will be traded at some point in time but not Letang or Maata. My guess is Englland.

Monday night matchup at the Consol Center is a huge early season must see game.

7-1 Colorado vs 7-1 Pittsburgh.

Colorado's coach Patrick Roy wants this game bad. This will be playoff hockey in October.

Playoff hockey. Avs defense is very tough.

Pens seemed to be on the offensive all night but couldn't get a goal. Tons of shots by the Pens but Colorado's defenders were blocking shots like madmen.

Tip your hat to 'em. They may be the best team in the Western Conference right now. Their goals against average is tops in the NHL at 1.3 and they have the second best penalty killing which came up aces vs the Pens who had 7 power play chances.

It is surprising how well the pens are doing considering all the injuries they have had all season. I think I will try and catch the next game against the blue jackets, much easier to get tickets in columbus than pitt.

With all the injuries etc this is outstanding. Pens are playing 4 1st year and 1 2nd year defensmen and are shutting teams down.

Fleury is a wall and this adds confidence to a very young defense.

Crosby gets the game winner in the 3rd and the Pens add a short-handed empty netter late to burn the Leafs.
