ESSO - IRONTON - COINCIDENCE ?

Post by FANOSPORTS »

Some of us "old-timers" remember the old ESSO (Exxon Mobil now) station commercials on tv/radio in the late 60's and early 70's that had the slogan "Put a Tiger in your tank" and the tiger tail hanging out of the gas cap. I was just thinking that was the timeframe when Ironton first became really relevant in football after the arrival of Coach Bruney then Coach Lutz and they do play in Tank stadium. Did anyone in Ironton ever take that slogan , pictures, etc. and use it back at that time ? (Just thought I'd have a little fun with this)

I live down in the Land of Clemson and Dabo. Funny you should mention Esso. The most popular watering home in Clemson is the Esso Club and die hard Tiger fans attach a Tiger tail to their trunks as they travel on game day.

While living and working down in North Carolina a few years ago, I had a friend who had season tickets to Clemson football games.I attended a few games with him,and you are right about the tiger tails hanging from the trunks of there cars.I'm not sure about how many roads might lead into and out of Clemson, but I remember the highway that we would always use, had these large ( and I mean large ) orange tiger paws painted on the road for what seemed like mile after mile. My friend always thought that I wanted them to win, but I didn't like them then, and I don't like them now.

Football fandom in the South is a little more intense than what you will find in Ironton or the Burg, and those two towns are football hotbeds.
