Loyalty to OSU is not what is in question. The inability of some posters to appreciate the truth and candor of others is what's causing some minor disagreements.

"Realistic Fans" are not blinded by their love and devotion to a program and can call it like they see it......even when it's not aligned or to the liking of the majority.

To point fingers and talk about another college for violations, then attempt to make a justifiable argument when your school is brought up in the discussion is hypocritical and foolish. At the moment we are discussing possibilities (knock on wood) and not actual instances.

The difference exists in the culpability of the actual school. If Florida did not know, had no reason to know, and did not create an atmosphere of noncompliance, they will not be punished. If shown to be otherwise, as with USC, they will be punished. Additionally, I have not pointed a finger at another school.

Dub posted in the original post that if OSU were investigated by the NCAA, OSU fans would not like the result. Yet, just five years ago, a joint investigation was completed and the NCAA praised OSU's athletic department as a model for other schools. Being so conclusive in the original post is far from stating that OSU may have their own issues to worry about.

Finally, I brought up the law school note merely to show that I have looked deeply into the violation and FERPA issue. I name-dropped McCann to reveal my source, as I was in the process of criticizing your mysterious reliable source. Naturally, I had to state my own. There is no reason to feel like an elitist about law school. I know plenty of fools at mine, and there are lawyers all over the globe. Hardly the elite.

Sorry that total disagreement on an issue draws such ire in the response. Apparently my dealings with OSU-fan Tressel-haters and constant pessimists has made my approach a bit too smug.

Anyway, "Realist Fanatic" is an oxymoron. Without the emotion and bias, one is merely an observer.

My thoughts, exactly.

Point taken, and I'm sure we're on the same page.

My perspective on the matter is not so much that OSU has issues, but instead that OSU fans should be careful in their bashing of
other schools with issues.
If the NCAA does investigate OSU, whether of not they have problems will be inconsiquintal,
the Mark Mays, Bob Greise's, and Colin Cowherds of the world will have the crucified before they even stand a trial.

Should it happen and the negative media aftermath follow, then the opposing fans will be all over the Buckeyes, and the Buckeye
fans that become the Buckeye apologists will be hung out to dry as hypocrits and not have a leg to stand on in their own defense.

On a positive note, you need to get that law degree and get back to Buckeye country, where the idiots are
mostly drunk, but share you're passion! lol

Great case right here on the pettiness of secondary violations:

Today OSU self reported 4 secondary violations for the recruitment of Seantrell Henderson.
They had to self report them because another school cried and complained.

Here is the summary of the violations:

1) Malcom Jenkins during the super bowl last season mentioned on camera for a network interview that Henderson should be a Buckeye
--Violation: Former players aren't eligable to recruit.
2) In a video done for ESPN Henderson was seen speaking with Chris Carter.
--Violation: Former players aren't allowed to recruit
3) T.P sent Henderson a text message saying "Come play for the Buckeyes"
--Violation: Current players aren't able to recruit
4) In a video for college gameday, Henderson was seen not walking with the team, but at the head of a group of recruits that
"were walking too close to the team" as the team made their way from Skull session at St. John's to the Shoe.
--Violation: Being too closely associated with the team on gameday.

These add to the list of self reported violations, which Orestes and I can both agree are petty.

I agree with this. Again, sorry for coming on strong in my first post. It's hard to believe the number of OSU fans who aren't even enjoying the current period. Apparently, OSU was winning national championships about every three years in the time before Tressel. I've been shouting them down so much that I jumped the gun on this one. I still agree with the substance of what I said but came on too strong.

There are probably fingerprints all over most major programs. However, SC flaunted their openness and became too Hollywood. If you flop it out in front of the NCAA, they will chop it off! Pardon the inuendo. :122246

gahs4ever wrote:The hypocrisy of big time sports is almost unbelievable. Although none of my broadbrushed points necessarily are related, I believe when taken as a whole they pose more questions than they answer.

First is the myriad of rules formed by the NCAA that make it difficult to even be eligible, let alone survive in college if you are a scholarship athlete. Perhaps these nonsensical rules (kinda like the old blue laws) need to be more realistic in terms of what student athletes under schoarship can and cannot legally do.

Then there is the very definition of amateur athletics itself. A kid can (for example) sign a professional baseball contract and play a few years in the minors and then if it doesnt work out he can come back and play college football. Isnt this what got Jim Thorpe in trouble, and isnt this a form of hypocrisy?

And then there are the Olympics; the last bastion of amateur athletics. Now we send a basketball team comprised of some of the top 100 players of all time to win an "amateur" gold medal. I suppose we feel justified because the Soviet Bloc teams were government subsidized for years, but with you are amateur or you arent.

Finally, I weary of hearing of NCAA investigations which turn up infractions as if they have taken care of the problem. It reminds me of the local law enforcement agencies who make front page news with every drug bust as if that takes care of the problem. In both cases for every bust there is a seemingly endless list of violators who havent been caught yet and possibly never will.

Not all the criminals are in prison, to coin a phrase.

Actually I believe they can be a professional in one sport (ex: baseball) and play another sport in college (ex: football). WVU had a DB a few years back that played minor league baseball in the summer then reported to football at the beginning of August.
