OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
Re: OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
This past season,6 teams made the playoffs with 5 wins or less. If the 12 team per region format would have been used instead, 44 of the 112 teams seeded 9-12 would have been in with 5 wins or less. 17 were 5-5, a few were 4-5-1 and one was 3-7. Added teams in the playoffs for '19 would have been Teays Valley, Tri-Valley, Philo, Cambridge,Washington Court House,Oak Hill,Fairland,Chesapeake, Nelsonville-York, Frontier and Southern.

I think it’s kinda cool that 8 teams will get to host a playoff game every year. That can really build and propel a program. Making the playoffs can get other gets motivated to play. Like I said I love that the season starts a week early. I’ll never complain about an extra week of football.

Cream of the crop will always rise. This is for the kids let them have fun and make the playoffs.

Standard bracket or do we re-rack the bracket after we see what seeds are left?

Re: OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
Extra week of football I get to watch, so I'm all for it. I understand the watered-down argument, but when OHSAA went to 8 teams/region, making the playoffs wasn't as big of a deal as it used to be. Adding 4 more teams/region not going to see much of a change. There will be some competitive week 1 playoff games between average to below-average teams, followed by the usual so-so Week 2 playoff games of good teams vs. average teams. Week 3 of playoffs will be when big boy football begins. Not that much difference from what we already got. Plus, the extra week off will be huge for the top 4 teams in each region to heal up after the usual Week 10 rivalry games.*

I like the idea. Of course old people will complain because that’s all they ever do. Gives teams that make the playoffs for the first time a competitive game vs getting killed by the cheater schools the first game
Re: OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
Exactly right. Not sure why anyone would have a complaint about this because it doesn't effect their world in the least bit. It's a greater incentive to getting players out and making the playoffs is something they'll always remember.EasternDspy wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 9:33 am Cream of the crop will always rise. I don't have any problems with it. It's not hurting the game and it could help with some of the smaller schools getting kids out to play.
Championship's are won in the off-season

At this point might as well make it like Basketball, everyone makes the Playoffs.

Lol Get off my lawn
Come on it’s for the kids. This is how Fort Frye program started. They barely made the playoffs one year as an 8th seed. They went to Kirtland and got hammered. What that did for the community was huge everyone wanted to be apart of it. So many kids that never played football decided they wanted to play. Now Fort is a force going 48-1 last 5 years in the reg season.

In the new format, the top four seeds in each regional will receive a first-round bye, while the No. 12 seed will play at the No. 5 seed, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8. In the second round, the No. 1 seed will play the winner of the 8-9 game; the No. 2 seed will play the winner of 6-11; the No. 3 seed will play the winner of 7-10; and the No. 4 seed will play the winner of 5-12.2trap_4ever wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 10:01 am Standard bracket or do we re-rack the bracket after we see what seeds are left?

I would rather they expand playoff teams than expanding divisions which would really water things down. Might be more blowouts now but I agree it might get more kids out overall if they have something to play for esp. for teams like Logan who have no league to compete in.

So in Division I there are 18 teams per Region- 12 of those will make the playoffs. This is not about competition but MONEY. In 2019 Gahanna Lincoln would have made the playoffs with a 3-7 record. At this point just put every in.

Re: OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
The proposal was written by coach and athletic trainer at Zanesville. Zanesville coach was just on local television sports. He said the thought behind it when it was written a year ago was to try to get more kids out for football. If 4 more schools per division are making it, then maybe it will create some excitement in some places who have not had it and get more kids to play. Help programs get kids out.
Thought that was an interesting angle.

I like the idea of adding teams but think that the lowest seed should play the highest seed. If the 12 seed wins they should play 1 in the next round not 4. This is my only complaint about it.Orange and Brown wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 2:41 pmIn the new format, the top four seeds in each regional will receive a first-round bye, while the No. 12 seed will play at the No. 5 seed, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8. Re: OHSAA Playoffs Expanding in 2021
Of course it about the money...OHSAA lost a boatload of money from cancelling boys and girls State basketball tourneys along with all spring sports. OHSAA is running on fumes as we speak and gotta make up that lost revenue somewhere. What worries me is why not go ahead and start it this upcoming football season? Makes me wonder if they already know something we don't about the upcoming football season (or lack thereof).*bsee12345 wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 4:45 pm So in Division I there are 18 teams per Region- 12 of those will make the playoffs.
