Has There Ever been a year better???

Post by SPelf »

Got to thinking of all the good teams in the area in 1989...

Burg 14-0
Ironton 14-0
Green 11-1
Coal Grove 10-2
Waverly 10-2
Lancaster 10-2
Symmes Valley 10-1
Trimble 10-1
Oak Hill 9-1
Westfall 8-2
West 7-3
Nelsonville York 7-3
East 6-4
Chillicothe 6-4
Portsmouth 6-4

If i missed any winning seasons that year I apologize, but has there ever been a better year with more good teams then 1989? Your thoughts?

I would argue 2000.

Amanda Clearcreek wins D5 state title. Their only loss came to Portsmouth, who went to Final Four in D3.

Portsmouth Notre Dame went 10-0, and Beallsville as well as Eastern also made playoffs in D6.

Nelsonville-York, Fort Frye and Miller(!) makes playoffs in D5.

Minford made playoffs, as did Burg (at 5-5!)

I think that someone could make a strong argument for 1981:

Coal Grove: 8-3 (Regional Runner Up)
Eastern Meigs: 10-0
Ironton: 10-0
John Glenn: 9-1
Lancaster: 9-1
Nelsonville-York: 13-0, State Champion
Oak Hill: 9-1
Portsmouth West: 8-2
Crooksville: 7-4 (Regional Runner Up)
South Point: 9-1
Unioto: 9-1
Warren: 9-1
Westfall: 7-2
Wheelersburg: 9-3 (State Semi-Finalist)

Crazy to think that the guys on that NY squad are fast approaching 60...

That 2000 Portsmouth team I've heard was something else.

I would still argue that the only one of those years mentioned has 2 state champs.
