Last night was my first trip to see a game at Earl Knight Field and also the first time seeing Huntington play.
The stadium is a nice little place with a good amount of seats on the home side and like most older type stadiums too few on the away side.
The crowd last night was a huge one for a home game and in talking to a few longtime Huntington fans, they all said the crowd was bigger than any they remember at any home game last season.
I heard from the great Coach Hollon, the head coach from Paint Valley and he had let me know that four starters were game time decisions, after the game I spoke to him and he said only two of them played. I wanted to thank the coach for talking to me for a while after the game last night and as always wish him and the Bearcats a great season.
One thing I did find odd and one that should never be was the game ticket was five bucks, while the program was 10 bucks.
I had to ask the lady selling them twice to make sure I heard the 10 buck price.
The opening kickoff was received by the Bearcats Austen Blevins, who sprinted 57 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown. The point after by a Facebook friend,Jacob Ott was good and the score stood,7-0 with 11:48 left on the clock.
Huntington would go to the ground at the 11:27 mark of the quarter, but Jesse Lewis was plowed down by Ott and Alex Walker for a one yard loss. Then at the 10:27 mark of the quarter Huntington quarterback, Elijah McCloskey was picked off by Buster Trent. The young Bearcats played the first series very well, almost like they were showing their fans that they had put last week behind them and were ready to move on.
The Young Bearcats offense lost the ball when, #60(not on the roster I have) pounced on a fumble with,7:30 showing on the clock.
Once again, it would be the Bearcats defense coming up big at the 6:33 mark of the quarter when Jay Riley picked off a McCloskey, to give the Bearcats the momentum back.
The clock showed 3:10 remaining in the quarter when Bearcat Freshman quarterback, Bryce Newland(6-2-210) took off and rambled to a 18-yard gain. The kid is big and green right now, so there will be times when the green will show up, this season. Teams better get him now because as times goes by the green will be gone and the big will be a lot bigger.
The Hunting defense would get a nice play from, #36 Jesse Lewis when he threw Drake Stanforth to the ground for a 5-yard loss. The Bearcats offense responded with a 19-yard gain on a Newland to Jay Riley pass, with 2:13 still left in the quarter. The clock showed 1:10 when,Gavin Snyder stopped Bearcats ball carrier Buster Trent, for a three-yard loss. With just :03 left in the quarter Newland was sacked by, Scott Pontious and #62(not on the roster I have)for a short loss add to that a flag and the lost was all the way back to the Bearcats 48-yard line. The Bearcats were forced to punt and making a nice opened field tackle to close out the quarter was,Tygr Tesi. The return man for Huntington was Jordan Sharp.
Cruz McFadden fielded a Huntsman punt and easily raced untouched 75-yard for a Bearcat score , making this a 13-0 game, with 10:07 left in the half. Wow!!! Just what the S.V.C. opponents did not want was another McFadden with big play ability tormenting them for four long years.
At the 10:07 showing on the clock Snyder was planted into the ground after gaining three-yards by Bearcat lineman Ott.
McCloskey would hook up with B. Smith(The way it is recorded in the program) with 8:37 left in the half, for a 18-yard gain to move the chains. McCloskey then would connect with Sharp good for a 36-yard gain. Just when it looked like Huntington was ready to light up the scoreboard McCloskey was picked off by,McFadden, with 6:59. McFadden comes from a long line of outstanding former Bearcats players
so his early success should not shock anyone at all.
Just sixty seconds were left in the quarter when the Bearcats stuffed a 4th down try by the Huntsman. The young Bearcats defense had shown this half that the more experience they get, the better they will be. Huntington defense had also shown that even though they are a little undersized, they were not shying away from hitting hard and knowing where to be and making the Bearcats offense work extremely too hard to get a yard.
The quarter had :52 seconds left and the Bearcats fans got a taste of the Freshman combo of Newland and McFadden,w hen they hooked up for a 52-yard score. The point after made this . 21-0 game.
The half ended with McCloskey being sacked by Freshman Brayden Ison.
Yes, that is another one of the Bearcats Freshman class that had crazy success at the lower levels and has a lot of Bainbridge salivating about the future.
Toward the end of the third quarter Huntington looked to have a little something going when they converted a 4th and one play. This was the tenth play of the drive, but then at the 1:28 mark of the quarter the Huntsman tried to convert another 4th down but the Bearcats defense forced an incomplete pass.
The Bearcats defense led by Ison, who sacked McCloskey on 4th and eight gave the fans another reason to cheer at the 10:16 mark of the quarter.
Drake Stanforth put the ball on the ground and making the Bearcats pay for it was Wes Stinchcomb . with 9:31 left in the game.
The Huntsman would finally get on the scoreboard with 5:33 left in the game when, Gavin Snyder scored from 10-yards out, making the final score,21-6.
